"PECOTA thinks that Carlos Delgado still has something left in the tank; I'm a bit skeptical, but PECOTA is usually pretty good about sounding the death knell on players who are losing their skills, and it clearly doesn't think that Delgado's there."

Dear God
let that be true. I think Delgado is the single biggest question mark for the Mets this year – if he hits like he did in the 2nd half, they’re an elite offense. If he hits like he did the previous year and a half, they’re gonna be middle-of-the-pack offensively. His power is that important.

When you think about it...
The Mets are a fairly projectable team.
Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Johan, and K-Rod are all all-star caliber players who should produce close to their career norms. They may be a bit better or a bit worse, but I would imagine that with good health, there is no reason to think these guys won’t have good years.
Murphy/Tatis, Schneider, Perez, Redding, the rest of the bullpen are what they are. Murphy and Perez could surprise us, but it’s unlikely.
Church, Maine, and Putz are all coming off some kind of injury/setback, but given health, you have to expect them to be contributors.
IMO, the only real wild cards on the team are Delgado and Castillo. I know Castillo is younger, but with both of them you have to be concerned about what you’re going to get out of them. The thing with Castillo is that even if you get a bit fat 0 out of him, you can pretty much plug in Cora, Reyes #2, or whoever at 2B and it shouldn’t hurt the team too much. Heck, we had Ruben Gotay holding down 2B for a decent stretch in ’07.
As you said, the real key is Delgado. If he doesn’t hit, we really don’t have any readily available replacements and I don’t believe we have the depth in the system to acquire anyone in a trade. If Delgado doesn’t perform, it could be a long season.
Geez, after typing that I almost vomited. Tell me again why they’re not going after Manny?

I forgot Pelfrey, who is kind of his own category, I suppose.
But you get the general idea. The team is made up of either star players in their prime who should not be regressing just yet (and in the cases of Wright and Reyes, could potentially get better, guys coming off of injury who should be fine if fully recovered, and complementary players whose ceilings we should provide competent production.

good point
and so as delgado with pwns or ats, he is seen as the sole reason the mets pwn or eat, and thus gets more crap/praise than he really deserves.
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON. WE WANT THE MANSION NOT THE CONDO.
