Make-The-Mets-O-Meter: Week 1 - Batters
This is the batter companion piece to yesterday's pitcher breakdown. The Mets don't have many roster spots up for grabs so we'll see a lot of players competing for very few jobs.
| Player | Comment | |
|---|---|---|
| Michel Abreu, 1B | ![]() |
Decent minor league hitter, but he's a 1B/DH and doesn't really have a ton of power. |
| Marlon Anderson, UT* | ![]() |
He might be in the best shape of his life. |
| Robinson Cancel, C* | ![]() |
He's going to Buffalo unless Ramon Castro is traded. |
| Jose Coronado, IF | ![]() |
Career .243/.313/.296 minor league hitter, all within the Mets organization. |
| Nick Evans, OF* | ![]() |
Is probably losing the numbers game in the Mets outfield picture. |
| Andy Green, 1B | ![]() |
Hit .331/.448/.545 in 178 at-bats with New Orleans last season. |
| Bobby Kielty, OF | ![]() |
Good plate discipline, iffy power. Spent 2008 in the minors with the Red Sox and Twins. |
| Rob Mackowiak, OF | ![]() |
Career 91 OPS+. He's an outfielder. You do the math. |
| Fernando Martinez, OF* | ![]() |
Is limited to batting practice right now. |
| Ramon Martinez, IF | ![]() |
Signed last week to fill out the Triple-A Buffalo roster. |
| Angel Pagan, OF* | ![]() |
Missed most of 2008 and will battle with Jeremy Reed for the final outfield spot. |
| Jeremy Reed, OF* | ![]() |
Good glove, good minor league bat, iffy big leaguer, so far. |
| Rene Rivera, C | ![]() |
There are a lot of fields at the Mets' spring training complex and somebody has to catch these pitchers. |
| Omir Santos, C | ![]() |
See: Rivera, Rene |
| Cory Sullivan, OF* | ![]() |
The poor man's Jeremy Reed and even Reed is no sure thing to make the Opening Day roster. |
| Josh Thole, C | ![]() |
Great plate discipline and iffy power, he's the official catching prospect of Amazin' Avenue. |
| Jose Valentin, IF | ![]() |
Had laser neck surgery last season. Is wearing 99 in camp. Does he have any bullets left? |
Key:
= Chance of making the Mets is unchanged.
= Chance of making the Mets is going down.
= Chance of making the Mets is going up.
* = player on 40-man roster

Re Abreu
Is there any chance he could make it over Anderson? I have a hard time seeing him being less useful.
Same question for Green
Chone actually projects him and Abreu to be much better than Anderson.
Basically is there any chance they admit Marlon Anderson is awful and the contract was a mistake and replace him with someone, anyone, who won’t be totally awful.
Is Thole the official catching prospect of Amazin' Avenue?
Or just the official catching prospect of Eric Simon?
Personally, and this is just me...
I like Francisco Pena. But me likey some Josh Thole, and I think he has it in him to be an MLB average starting catcher.

Isn't
Cory Sullivan on a major league deal?
I don’t know how I feel about evans as a “prospect” but Im pretty sure Id rather have him playing everyday at Buffalo than hitting for Delgado/Church against tough Lefties.
I vote Kielty.
I think it’s been mentioned that Marlon isn’t much of an IF anymore. So if he gets the heave-ho, I would like to see Kielty make the team.
Cora is our backup MI. Murphy can play any IF position other than SS in a pinch. Tatis can play the corners as well. Take a look at Kielty’s splits , the dude can hit LH pitching. I think he would make for a nice platoon partner for Church if Church reverts back to his career splits against LH pitching (which I guess would be likely.) He would also be nice to have around if Tatis is terrible.
Plus, Kielty is a guy who has played the role of 4th OF on a contender before. He was the 4th OF on the Red Sox in ‘06 and actually had a the pinch hit HR that ended up being the series clinching run. He would be a solid guy to have on the bench since he can play all 3 OF positions and probably won’t complain about playing time.
I vote for Kielty, too.
He’s decent hitter who has lots of OF experience, 2 attributes Marlon can’t claim. A bench of Castro, Tatis, Cora, Pagan and Kielty isn’t great, but barring a breakout spring from one of the kids, or a stunning comeback from one of the vets, it’s the best we’ve got.

I haven't heard much of anything about Andy Green
but that’s an impressive line, albeit in a low number of AB’s and in a hitters league. Also, whatever happened to Val Pascucci, is he still in the organization, or has he moved on?
What's the difference
if we didn’t use him last year, why would we use him now?
agreed
I was just curious if we’d get to watch another season of him putting up monster numbers in AAA while we have a revolving door in leftfield that he inexplicably isn’t a part of…I’d also be interested to see what kind of numbers he’d put up in the International League, to see if maybe he was a product of the PCL.
Pascucci
I’d love to see the guy get a shot (can’t see why he didn’t get even a call-up last year). But from what I can find, he’s still a free agent. Go figure.

Pascucci
Here’s the thing, this guy has 62 ABs in the majors, and hasn’t been in the majors since 2004 when he played for a team that doesn’t exist anymore. If he doesn’t get a shot this year in this economic climate, you have to think that there is a reason why this guy isn’t getting a shot.
Yeah, there has to be more to it than just stats or a numbers squeeze.
Like, he’s got a rep for a bad attitude, or being lazy.

Nope, not a FA anymore.
While examining the Dodgers’ roster for evidence of Ned Colletti’s “genius”, I did find Pascucci signed a minor-league deal with LA six weeks ago, and is an NRI to spring training.

pour some out for valentin's stache and send him packing
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON. WE WANT THE MANSION NOT THE CONDO.
Question about presentation
Why are the players listed in alphabetical order? It seems like knowing which way the player is trending (the colored arrows) is more useful if you also know how they rank currently.

Things like this are why I hate this blog.
I’m not a Mets fan, I’m a Rangers fan. I only come here because my girlfriend is a Mets fan.
But seriously, this is annoying. I go to MetsBlog regularly because it’s absolutely hilarious. The content is sad and the commenters are so insane it makes for endless laughs.
This blog has none of that. Instead it has cool concepts like this and forward-thinking analysis and reasonably bright commenters (especially for a New York team!!!) and stuff like that, and, frankly, it’s a waste of my time.
As long as you insist on having worthwhile content and no stupid shenanigans, I will be bored of your blog. I hope you’re happy.
Geez, and I was gonna compliment your profile photo and everything
Now, no way. No tacos for you.
