Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Heath Bell explains how he lost 25 pounds using the Wii Fit this offseason. I love Heath, but if you're a millionaire athlete whose success and livelihood practically requires implores you to be in great physical shape, you've got a serious discipline problem if the only way you can motivate yourself to exercise is with a video game.

Inevitable bad pun:

So, now the slogan must be “Wii Heath Bell”?

'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

wii fit is to 2009

as Nomar’s workout was to 1999

Does this mean the ‘steroid era’ is officially over?

this is more preposturous because it is such a long segment

i guess the rollerblade companies wouldn’t endorse Heath so he took matters into his own belly.

Now that's just being lazy.

I understand the Wii is all the rage as well as the Wii Fit, but to use it to work out in order to get ready for the season? That’s pure laziness.

Why not take an old fashioned run for a couple miles? Maybe a cycling class or pumping iron? Hell, Krav Maga could be effective as well, no?

I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!

"When I was" story.

When I was 19 @ 5’9" I was 230lbs. I looked like a large bag of wet play-doh. It took me 8 months of changing my lifestyle: traditional working out – running and weights, and just plain old eating right and I got down to 165. I stayed at that weight for seven years and then age began to creep in.

I don’t give two $hits HOW anyone chooses to lose the weight (naturally) as long as they make a concerted effort to get off of their a$$ and do so. It sets a good example for his kid as well.

*I bet there was a time when people thought that running on a treadmill was stupid too.

My problem

Is not that he lost weight, but that until he discovered the Wii Fit he couldn’t find a way to motivate himself — a professional athlete in line for millions of dollars — to lose weight.

We’re not talking about a 9-to-5er who works all week, takes care of the family and can’t find time to work out. This is someone whose only job is to play baseball, and who would greatly benefit from being in terrific shape, and yet he can’t find it in him to get in shape unless some gimmick comes along to trick him into doing so.

by Eric Simon on Feb 26, 2009 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

Interesting

Maybe he’s not motivated by only making $420,000 for the ’09 season. Maybe it will take the millions he expects to make to motivate him to go outdoors.

It’s very interesting that the same people who can support the idea that players deserve millions of dollars for playing a sport are the same people who find it difficult to understand why some players can’t be motivated by that same money to get in or stay in shape. Why should I expect players to be rational or logical?

IMHO as long as the guy finds something that motivates him to lose weight (in this case the Wii) I’m cool with it. Money didn’t motivate Castillo to perform better. It was his lousy overall play, receiving crap by the fans, negative write ups in the newspaper and the perception that he ‘sucked’ that motivated Castillo.

I don’t know the workout history of Bell. It could be that the guy had a decent workout program but he happened to plateau and / or he got bored with it. It’s not unheard of. Look, I’m actually in agreement with you that the guy should be able to self-motivate due to his circumstances. But at the same time, I’m not going to begrudge him for finding another (some would say unconventional) outlet to shed a few pounds.

I’m just waiting for the report that states: “Heath Bell falls off of Wii and sprains ankle and breaks wrist.”

Motivation

I can see how it can be hard to find motivation to lose weight when the highest paid pitcher in baseball is also the most overweight pitcher in baseball.

Heath Bell's weight wasn't affecting his performance right?

If not I can understand why he wouldn’t be motivated to lose weight for the season.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
