Sherman: Mets Still Trying to Move Castro
I had honestly forgotten that Robinson Cancel still exists.

I'm not sure how I feel about this
Castro as part of a platoon, has a pretty solid bat for a catcher, and Cancel is kind of horrible as far as I know, even with the time we know he’s going to miss I have a hard time seeing Schneider/Cancel being as productive as Schneider/Cancel.
More importantly it worries me that, despite having a payroll already lower than last year we’re worrying about cutting 2.6 million on an expiring contract.
I don't know
I think Schneider/Cancel would be exactly as productive as Schneider/Cancel

interesting
although, on the surface i feel as if a schneider/castro platoon would be more productive than schneider full time/cancel backup. castro, when healthy, is a pretty good hitter and i think would complement schneider well behind the plate.
of course, i have no data back up anything i just said, but thats why i come to AA…so you guys can prove me wrong!

haha
i know…i was just saying i know nothing about sabermetrics and a lot of the capital letter combinations i see here confuse the hell out of me. so someone out there may have data to suggest or refute something i think i see, thats all.
great pic by the way…once i got to king hippo in punch out, i was satisfied

I look after you. I do a lot for you. If you trade Castro now,
I say fuck you Omar, I’ll do it myself.

This is a joke, right?
So after committing all this stupid money to the Bench Scrub All-Stars, now we need to dump Blastro’s salary?
Even better thought
We dump Hippo to set aside enough money to sign Pudge for something like 2 yrs/$10mil. Wouldn’t that just make your head explode?

Are these the 'lucrative endorsements' athletes get when they sign w/ NY teams?
You’ve got this and Jeter’s Ford Challenge. Embarrassing.
The problem is Castro can't be a full time catcher
I believe he has back arthritis or something like that so there is no way he’d be able to play more games than he usually does.
First half was great, second half has been awful.

I cannot believe that we’re so desperate for cash that Castro’s $2.5 million salary is completely hampering our ability to sign players. Can’t anyone out there be foolish enough to be interested in Schneider instead? Castro/Cancel probably works better for us.

But that would indicate someone on the team has a clue what they're doing.

I defended the Schneider trade
But he was very disappointing last year, to say the least. I think I could provide as much production at the plate as those two guys together.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
I still liked the trade, if only because we got Ryan Church.
But you’re right, Schneider was pretty bad. Why aren’t we trading him?

I imagine cause not many people want him
And because Cancel is horrible and Castro can’t be a full time catcher.
But people are like "trade Castro and sign Pudge".
I don’t care about left and right in this instance. I’d much prefer Castro and Pudge over Schneider and Pudge. And frankly, I’d just stick with Schneider/Castro.

This really pi$$es me off
I actually like the Schneider/Castro platoon myself. I too think it’s pretty rubbish to have spent $1m here and $750K there on godawful outfielders for New Orleans only to have to trim salary now. Bah.
Yes he does.
His plan is to sign a bunch of castoffs and retreads to low-cost deals and see if he can strike gold with a few of them. he had success in this way with Castro and Roberto Hernandez in 2005, the ’Stache and Darren Oliver in 2006, Easley in 2007, Tatis and Stokes in 2008.
Whether it’s viable as a long-term strategy is a question, of course, and it seems like the Mets tend to stick with some of these guys (read: Marlon Anderson) for too long, and I don’t think any of us believe the chances of hitting it big with these kinds of guys justify skimping on everyday players. But as a way to fill out the back end of your roster and your bullpen, it doesn’t seem so bad; better than overpaying for guys who performed well in a small sample size of PAs or IP the previous year, I think. Fits with Billy Beane’s theory about putting together a bullpen and I could certainly see the same concepts applying to bench position players.
Excellent point
I also believe Omar has a plan, just a very questionable one. Though I do like the bullpen construction, got two big name Bullpen Aces and still has two bullpen spots ready to be battled for by a variety of NRI, two Rule 5 picks, Conor Robertson from ARI, and all the minor leaguers we have. Close to how our 06 bullpen was constructed and much better idea than the set bullpens we’ve had in 07 and 08.
By no plan, I mean a bad one.
Don’t you think at this point, with the prices this low, it makes more sense to get a good player at a bargain than people who may be good at an ultra bargain, especially when you’re a big market team.

Preaching to the choir my friend
but to be fair, the Mets are spending $136 million on payroll, along with paying Willie, the current coaching staff, the minors, money for the draft, international signings, and the hundreds of other expenses that come with running a team.
definitely agree
As I said, this approach doesn’t make sense for everyday players, especially not when there are better players with better major league track records whose prices are coming down day by day. I just think it’s a decent way to put together the back end of a roster.
Yeah, but are we trying to find a bunch of backups?
I thought that’s why we signed those outfielders already, and Alex Cora. Why, then, do we need to trade our productive when healthy catcher who’s signed to a reasonable contract to get more guys who may or may not help the team at all?
I normally shoot down people who say “the Mets are a big market team, act like one!!!” because obviously, the Mets have a big payroll already. But in this case, it just makes no sense. Adam Dunn is probably going to be given a one year $5 million contract, which is a ridiculous bargain. Add Ben Sheets having been available for less than Oliver Perez when he’s a better pitcher (with worse health, granted, but he was healthy last year, and it was for a smaller contract), and I just don’t understand Omar’s plan whatsoever.

The problem is when you skimp for these guys to fill major roles
Like having Fernando Tatis penciled in as part of your starting left fielder. Not to mention we do still overpay for guys who performed well in small sample sizes, Alex Cora being a prime example. And Beane’s builds that way because he has to, we don’t have too.
