Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

I'm sure most of us weren't shocked when the initial report came out that he juiced. However, it's kind of surprising to see that he actually came out and admitted it. That at least puts him above Clemens and Bonds in my eyes, who continually deny allegations despite the mounting evidence. Good for A-Rod for showing some balls (although they are probably shrunken).

I now have a tremendous amount of respect for ARod.

I’m not condoning what he did, and not giving him a total pass, but this is exactly what baseball needs.

“Back then, [baseball] was a different culture,” Rodriguez said. “It was very loose. I was young, I was stupid, I was naïve. I wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time.”

Before this story was released, everyone assumed ARod would lead baseball out of the steroid era because he was a clean player. From what I have read on espn.com, I believe he can still be that player, but for a different reason than we all thought. It seems that ARod is going to be the first baseball player to be totally candid not only that he took PEDs, but his motivations for doing so. I think this is a great thing and once the story of PEDs and baseball is out there and the general public has more of an understanding as to WHY these players did what they did, then I think we can finally begin to move on from the steroid era.

Seriously, how many people can honestly say that they wouldn’t have done what ARod did if they were in a similar position? I know we all like to think that our morals are built of brick and mortar, but it’s easy to say you wouldn’t take PEDs. It’s a much more difficult decision when you’re in the position these ballplayers are/were in.

I agree 100%

But you know what? It won’t matter. The self-righteous windbags in the media and Yankee fans who hated him anyway aren’t going to give him a pass.

I wish Derek Jeter would appear on a list of juicers. My schadenfreude meter would be pegged in the red, not because of any personal animosity towards Jeter, but because it would make a total joke of the sports media in this country (not that they need the help).

Sure

I’m glad he’s being candid and I don’t really care that he used PEDs – but on the other hand, he’s only sorry because he got caught.

I’m a microscopic cog on the wheel of the bureaucracy my friend. At my level, we better admit we “f’d” up or it’s Guanatamo for us…You dig?

Don't be so modest, Lou.

I’m even more microscopic than you are. Although people definitely notice when we screw up. Tomorrow, I have to find out what happened to 70 boxes of very, very important files. All I can say is that I am very, very glad I had nothing to do with their disappearance.

70 boxes?! Oh lord!

I’m laughing on the inside now because I can only imagine the mass conflagration that’s going to take place if that information isn’t located. Good luck brother.

i'm glad you're in favor of accountability

a lot of people in the government don’t seem to be into that accountability stuff—seems like they prefer to point fingers instead of solving problems, no?

by gogomets on Feb 11, 2009 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

Either it's the prior Marine Corps in me or the German in me. Maybe a little bit of both.

Speaking generally here: If someone isn’t going to take some pride in their work, then I don’t want them around. Period. With pride comes accountability. If they can’t hack it, they can pack it!

I'm not giving him a pass.

Gamons asked him if he took specific PED’s and A-Rod bounced around the question saying he didn’t know what he took and he wanted to see the results of the test to see what he popped positive for. Get the hell out of here! He didn’t know what he took?! He didn’t know what the hell was going into his body?! Epitome’ of dumb, jock, athlete!

I will give him some credit for 'fessing up

But yeah, he only admitted to it because the test results went public. Still, the Yankee fans will never let him live it down. That guy is going to go through hell there.

I'm just waiting on the next "leak" for the following:

Pujols and Teixeira. Whatever you do, don’t call me crazy. No one thought this way of A-Rod either. I’ve had enough of records and stats. I just want to see the team play and win as a team. The hell w/all the rest.

I really hope it's not Pujols.

The man is an amazing player. It would kill me if he took PEDs.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
