Adam Kennedy Released
Hopefully, the Mets show interest him. He's about +10 defensively at second and would be a much better insurance policy for Castillo than Alex Cora.

Okay...
not really arguing against the point, but Cora got like a guaranteed $2 mil.

Marlon Anderson is due 1.15MM for this year.

Yup
And I doubt we’ll cut him too. Cerrone seemed pretty jazzed up about Marlon today. “Best shape of his life” or whatever.

Just like Jeff Francoeur last year, right?

And countless other guys
who came to camp in the “best shape of his life” and then sucked.

Marty Noble, whom I hate, made a good point
in his Mets Inbox (which was renamed because he no longer has a staff member put his e-mails in letter form and then type his responses on mets.com). Who says Castillo can’t return to form to some degree this year? We really shouldn’t write him off because he hasn’t been any good in less than 1 1/2 years. It’s not like booing the shit out of him is gonna make him play any better.

I agree
And the more I think about it, the more I want Castillo hitting leadoff, assuming he’s going to play every day. Getting on base is by far the most important thing for the leadoff hitter to do, and coincidentally it’s also by far the best (some might say "only") skill Castillo has at the plate. If he could put up an OBP of .360 and steal 20-25 bases at a decent success rate, without having to worry about advancing/driving in runners in front of him (which he’s not suited to doing because he takes a lot of pitches and almost exclusively hits the ball on the ground), I think he could be a legitimate contributor. Probably still not worth $6M, but since the Mets have to pay that if the keep him regardless of how much he’s used, and probably would have to pay part of it if they traded him, may as well find a way to optimize the use of his skills.
In contrast, the fact that Reyes tied for second on the team with 72 extra base hits last year demonstrates that he has value elsewhere in the lineup. Even if some of those triples turn into doubles with slower guys in front of him, they’re still pretty useful. I think it’s probably a non-starter because “Reyes is the leadoff hitter” but it’s worth considering.

I'm the biggest Castillo apologist here
I’m just thinking from Omar’s perspective that we need to have a “regular secondbaseman” waiting in the wings.

That's not necessarily true
We don’t know that there won’t be other teams interested in him. Presumably we here on this forum aren’t the only ones aware that Kennedy is a very good fielder, after all.

I would disagree that we could name our price
But considering how many middle infielders are still sitting on the market and that guys like Counsell and Eckstein were setting for such small deals I wouldn’t be surprised if he could be signed on a minor league contract.

Way off topic
I’m watching A-Rod on ESPN and I find myself not caring at all. I thought I would derive joy from this, but once Clemens got nabbed, I guess nothing could top that for me.

Jeter?
David Eckstein?
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

well...
Jeter, of course. That will never happen. Unless steroids help you invent the inside-out swing and the jump throw in the hole.
