Mets Release Duaner Sanchez
Though the writing may have been on the wall for a while, the Mets release Duaner Sanchez this morning.
"We looked at it, really, his over all performance based upon last year to what we see now and we didn’t see the improvement," Minaya said.
By cutting Sanchez before mid-march they will save more than $1 million of his $1.6 million salary for 2009.

Good luck, Dirty.
That was one expensive cab ride, buddy.
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

Wow.
I actually did not see this coming. I thought he would have been a part of our bullpen this year. Not in a set up role, but as a piece of the puzzle, I thought he would have been effective.

Farewell
A great pitcher, sporadically. Ciao Dirty!

good move omar
i never had much faith in duaner last year, and he didn’t show much improvement this spring. i know the team is only saving about $1 million, but perhaps this is a precursor to signing pedro? probably not, but who knows.

Omar is going to keep 7 in the bullpen right?
I’m reading some people assuming it’s going to be 6. That doesn’t seem smart to me, or realistic. I’m pretty sure they’ve kept 7 on the opening day roster since Omar’s arrival.

They've always had to.
Because their rotation has always been filled with injury risks, guys who can only pitch 5 innings, and crappy 5th starters (not that I have much faith in this year’s prospective 5th starters either.)

And then there was one
Pedro Felicano is the last man standing in the bullpen from opening day last year.

This is a good thing.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Sanchez
Nobody has mentioned this, but is there any chance we re-sign him to a minor league contract? I don’t know if he’ll get a major league deal from anyone else.

Yeah, I thought the same thing above.

I can't really disagree with the decision to release him
But it does make me worry more about our bullpen depth, he, if healthy was supposed to be one of the few non-specialists who we’d see before the 8th and 9th.

I dont like this move
I just don’t have more faith in the guys beyond Dirty at this point and I was expecting dirty to be at least average out there this season.
I sure hope there’s more to the story (i.e. Dirty’s attitude or something)…he has a lot of issues in the past.
If this move was to save money, I’ll just pretend we’re a small market team and be ok with it…..

Here's the story.
He was topping out at 85. The End.

Do you think it's likely he'll gain 10 or so mph of velocity in a little over a month?
Because that’s how far away he was from his pre-injury velocity. Sure they could have waited a few more weeks but more than likely they’d just be wasting time, and money, that could be used to fill the hole.
Of course I’m assuming they are going to try and fill the hole and really who knows, I guess they might just bump everyone else up a spot an decide we’re good.

Sanchez, for reference
His average fastball speed in 2006 was 93.2; in 2008 it was 89.8.

noooo i dont think he'll gain 10MPH magically.
oliver perez ate all the magic beans around here anyway ;)
i just think it was worth $1.3M to find out if he could’ve been useful. i dispute the 85MPH # to begin with, but whatever. he wasnt 100% awful last season, he had some good moments and ended horribly.
I just wish we paid the money to keep him and take the chance. we take chances on so many other guys allll the time, but we couldnt do it here, for $1.3M?
if we needed that money that bad, it really really sucks.
