Mets Announcer Tournament First Round: Tom Seaver vs. Tim McCarver
Friday's results: Gary Cohen (95%) def. Jiggs McDonald (5%). Today's matchup might be the most intriguing of the first round. Tom Terrific is the greatest Met player ever, but his time in the booth wasn't exactly memorable. McCarver gets a bad rap for his long-winded style, and deservedly so, but I think he was better in the 1980's-1990's than he is today:

41
I think McCarver was a better announcer, but can you really vote against 41 in this race.
Tough Call
As someone who remembers Tim McCarver during the 80’s I can say that he was much better then, than he is now. I attribute that to the fact that the three man booth of McCarver, Kiner, and Zabriskie, allowed each to share play-by-play and color duties. Now that Timmeh only does color it has become a constant demonstration of how much he “knows” mixed with awkward, obscure, and often incorrect pop culture references.
Seaver never really seemed to embrace the booth.
As of now I remain undecided.
remember sane McCarver
Growing up in the 80s, I learned a lot of what I know about baseball by watching a much more subdued McCarver. I agree that he is completely insufferable now, but back then he was a welcome dose of insight and perspective.
Never felt Seaver has added much to my viewing experience as an announcer.
We’ve been really lucky – a LOT of great announcers over the years.
Seaver comes off as very arrogant (esp. in regards to pitch counts)
that being said, the guy desereves to be arrogant as one of the best pitchers ever and that attitude probably helped get him where he is today. While Darling does a great job explaining grips and pitching, Seaver can rival him if given the right questions. That’s the real problem with Seaver, he needs a good straight man if you’ll allow me to use a comedy metaphor.
80s McCarver was awesome
…90s+ McCarver not so good.
Seaver, awesome pitcher, as an announcer, meh.
This is the toughest matchup
I held my breath and went with McCarver.
You can only vote once
Unless you jump through some hoops to clear browser cookies, which is only possible if you’re not already logged into SBN (i.e. you’re voting anonymously).
What, you find the voting suspicious?
More than anyone voting against Bob Murphy?

mccarver's current assness can not be ignored
regardless of how bearable and inoffensive he was in the past.
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON. WE WANT THE MANSION NOT THE CONDO.
I didn't hear McCarver in the '80s
So it wouldn’t be fair for me to vote. If it were based on recent performance, I would go with Seaver all the way.

mccarver is the first voice i associated with baseball
i don’t really remember seaver as a broadcaster (didn’t watch much baseball during his tenure). so my vote went to mccarver.
McCarver
Just as I wouldn’t judge the 86 Mets by the standard set by say the 1993 Mets, I won’t judge the 80’s McCarver by the current model. And Seaver in the booth could be plenty insufferable and actually never sounded that bright. I got the impression he was winging it most of the time and did not really know the players that well at all.
One thing about Seaver
I remember him being better in the Yankees booth than he was with the Mets. Maybe he was more into it back then or maybe compared to Rizzuto anyone was better. I know that doesn’t matter since this is about his Mets tenure, but I though I’d throw that out there.
I went with Seaver
I’m too young to remember McCarver in the 80’s, but when I started watching I didn’t like him that much. I don’t want my announcers to be homers (I think I’d kill myself if I was a Marlins fan), but I used to get the feeling that McCarver actively disliked the Mets. In a town where the top radio hosts on the Mets flagship station were a Yankees and a Giants fan, I didn’t care for a Mets broadcaster who seemed to be rooting against the team. He seemed much happier when he went to the Yankees, and I was much happier as well.
Seaver wasn’t great, but I always found his arrogance to be pretty funny. He had a very “I’m Tom Seaver and you’re not” attitude, which I kinda loved.
McCarver
Seaver is pretty terrible, guys. He even manages to grind broadcasts to a halt when he comes in for half-innings to promote his wine collection on SNY. He’s a true bore. I obviously have great respect for being the greatest player in the franchise’s history. But he was a terrible announcer.
McCarver was mostly palatable when he was a Mets announcer. He’s absolutely excruciating now. But this is a Mets announcer tournament, and I don’t really see how Seaver could justifiably win this matchup under those terms.
McCarver got my vote
He, Zabriskie, and Ralph on Channel 9 on a summer night was one of the things the 9-year-old version of me really looked forward to. Tim wasn’t as much of a Joe Morgan-lite back then (maybe FOX trained him to be more idiotic, it is FOX, after all) and he worked well with Ralph and Steve.
Seaver wasn’t bad, but McCarver was better back in the 80s.
2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?
McCarver was pretty solid

McCarver was in that?
I remember Costas, but not Timmy.

McCarver
was great in his prime. Seaver was always dreadful. No contest
As others have said
McCarver was pretty good back in the day, even through the mid 90’s. He really helped draw me into baseball, personally. Seaver, meanwhile… well, I wish his stint in the booth had never happened.
Kiner made McCarver Better
Keep in mind that when it was just Ralph and Tim, Tim was the play-by-play guy – and he was pretty good at it. It wasn’t until he wanted to be like Joe Morgan that his announcing went to hell. I love Tom Seaver (heck my kid is named after him), but McCarver and Kiner were the voices of the 80s. . .
Tom Seaver
should be loved as a pitcher but not a broadcaster. He had a million dollar arm and a ten cent personality
What happened to the updated bracket links?
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Thanks for the reminder
Will either post in tomorrow’s matchup or on Thursday when the 1st round is complete

McCarver on this one
Before the abomination that is Comcast Sportsnet Filadelfia ever existed, I used to get Channel 9 as a kid, and that’s where all the Mets games were broadcast. I remember McCarver teamed up with Gary Thorne. I found him to be tolerable then, and I liked Thorne as well. So based on that experience, and the fact that Seaver could come across as condescending behind the microfone, my vote went to McCarver. It probably won’t in the later rounds, though.
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!
How can any Met fan willingly vote for a man who betrayed (yes, BETRAYED) the Mets for the Yankees? ’Nuff said.
That's actually a fair point
I mean, I’m sure it was strictly a business move. But come ON. Tom Seaver calling games for the Yankees?! That’s like Jetes calling games for the Mets.

No, not quite the same.
We’d never let Jeter into the booth.
