Hamels to have elbow examined
Could be nothing, but 'persistent elbow discomfort' usually portends something worse. Plus, there's that Verducci Effect thing.

Is it o.k. for me to like the fact that he has an injury because he plays for the Phillies?
Another pitcher, another injury. WTF?

Some pitchers prefer ice, some prefer heat
But I’ve found the soultion! HOT ICE! See you take the Ice and heat it up till it’s hot.
That is so stupid
that it’s funny. :-P

i think it's fine
unless that injury is actually debilitating, i dont see the problem. he’s still rich and can lead a long and healthy life. so screw him.

That's what ~270 innings in the regular and postseason might do to a guy
Plus another ~30 or so in spring training. Of course we don’t know if this is actually a problem, but still, lot of work for Whole Camels last season.

I feel like an asshole for saying this
But I hope he pays a visit for Jimmy Andrews for some TJ surgery soon. Phuck the Phillies.
2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?
Sorry, but what's the Verducci Effect?

Verducci effect
Named for Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated, this is a negative forward indicator for pitcher workload. Verducci, who called this the ‘Year After Effect,’ found that pitchers under the age of 25 who have 30-inning increases year over year tend to underperform. Will Carroll independently found that pitchers who break the “Rule of 30” tend to get injured. Carroll renamed this ‘rule’ the Verducci Effect in honor of the man who initially found the evidence.

Now I know
Knowledge is half the battle. Now if only the baseball machine can spit out balls a little lower to Rollins…

dont forget
there is plenty of criticism of the verducci affect too. the main discrepency comes from the fact that its not simply the number of innings that lead to increased injury, its the extra innings logged on an already fatigued arm. its a subtle difference and unfortuntley its impossible for the average fan and probably even the most well connected beat reporter to know exactly when a young pitcher’s arm is fatigued and how many pitches beyond that point the fatigued arm throws. what it does mean though, is that is possible to go over the verducci limit and suffer no ill affects as long as the arm is properly monitored.
uh, but yeah, hamels is a butt head.

Damn Gina!
That’s good stuff. Heard about this (Verducci) on the way to work. Question: Would a 6 man rotation improve these problems? Is a 6 man rotation feasible? Don’t be too angry with me asking such stupid questions, I’m just curious.

Would you want fewer Santana starts?
If not, the key is just to monitor young pitchers and build them up with incremental IP increases. This starts way before they get to the majors.
A 6 man rotation would be feasible for some teams
But for us it would be a nightmare, do you really want to take starts from Santana and give them to Livan + ????
