Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Just the box score here kiddies! Had to get somethin' posted before bed. Listened to innings 6 & 7 on the way home and saw 8 & 9 at home. Unbelievable comeback with the winning bat provided by Mr. David Wright with 1 out and bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. Oh man, what a game!

Best possible thing to possibly come out of that

is that a hit in that spot maybe helps Wright relax when he comes up in similar situations later in the year. And it was funny seeing Beltran try to sneak a bunt past Wright, he should’ve known it wouldn’t work – although he might have been doing one of his inexplicable “move the runner over” bunts.

Anyone who didn’t see it has to catch a replay of Beltran’s absolute thievery of McCann – wow, what a catch, but if he would have banged his knees up . . .

By far

the most entertaining WBC game I’ve watched yet. Maybe its just the Mets fan in me, but a lot of great moments in that game. Delgado cranking that homer to dead center. Beltran robbing McCann. Putz striking out Beltran and Delgado back to back on nasty splitters. And of course the walk off hit for Wright. Aside from that being awesome, there were just some amazing moments captured right after in the celebration. First, Mike Schmidt coming out and nearly getting caught in the skrum. Then Wright getting greeted and mobbed by Kevin Youkalis, Shane Victorino*, and Brian McCann with all of them looking so ecstatic. Youkalis swiping Wright’s helmet and darting off with it. And then there was a still image they had up on MLB.com where Adam Dunn looks like he’s about to pick Wright up by the shirt and toss him into the air. That’s kinda frightening, but pretty awesome to see happen so genuinely.

I also want to note, I really enjoyed listening to Vasgersian, Reynolds, and Leiter. They were a surprisingly good team, and have been on the MLB network. They were loose and having fun, just kooky enough just insightful enough. It was a similar chemistry to what Gary, Keith, and Ron have.

*BTW, I absolutely can’t stand Shane Victorino. I feel like that thought runs through my head every time I watch him play. What was with that little kick he pulled to deflect the ball and take that extra base on Alex Rios’ routine throw in? I’ll give him credit, because what he does works, but I just hate watching him play.

Youklis

It was funny as hell watching him trying to take the helmet. He looked like a fullback trudging towards the goal line with the helmet and 1/2 of D. Wright’s head in it. He had this big, childlike, $hit eating grin on his face as if to say: “Yeah, yeah! Momma, I’m gonna score! Momma, I’m gonna score!”

Man, that was epic!

It's a gritty, hardnosed play because victorino did it

but if reyes did it…it’d be another example of a mets player playing dirty or something.

Lol

exactly. I think the point is, Reyes respects the game enough not to do childish stuff like that. I can’t imagine Reyes, let alone anyone on the Mets, pulling that. But, you know, he likes to do complicated high fives, so I must be wrong, he has no respect for the game.

awesome

As a Phillies fan I can say that that bottom of the 9th was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. It helps that Rollins scored the winning run, of course…

With the whole Wright / Victorino / Rollins / Jeter / Delgado / Beltran / Romero / Youkilis / Dunn / Schmidt confluence of divided loyalties, I’m kind of surprised the eastern seaboard didn’t crack off the greater North American land mass and slide into the Atlantic.

Don't worry...

That will happen when Canseco, McGuire, Bonds and Clemens are inducted into the HOF.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
