Mets Announcer Tournament Elite 8: Bob Murphy vs. Howie Rose
Yesterday's results: Ron Darling (87%) def. Fran Healy (13%). There were no big surprises in the first round, and it's been fun sharing stories/memories about all the announcers. Today's matchup, the first of the Elite 8:
Bob Murphy VS. Howie Rose

tough draw
tough bracket for howie . . . I might’ve had these two in the finals if the brackets were different . . .
I like Howie Rose and all, but this is Bob Murphy
There is no round in which I wouldn’t vote for Bob Murphy, as he is the greatest Mets announcer ever.
I imagine Bob will have an easier time than Memphis is having with Cal State Northridge.
2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?
Howie's great. But I know Bob Murphy. Bob Murphy was a friend of mine.
You know the rest….
Save the neck for me, Clark.
Murph
I remember the last game I heard Murph’s voice – it was a spring training game. he was there telling stories and talking about the game. I just sat and listened to every word thinking it may be the last time I’d have the chance. Love that Bob Murphy.

I sorta wish I could forget Murph's last few years.
The games he called during the ‘80s and ’90s I remember fondly, but not so much those of the ’00s. He stayed on the air years longer than I would’ve liked (though not all the way to total Kiner-like ridiculousness), and listening to him try to call games through a thunderstorm of hacking coughs and senior moments tarnished his memory a little for me. This is part of why I’ll be voting for Gary Cohen in the final round. But let’s not anticipate that argument before its time.
I understand
But even when he was not as good at calling a game, he could tell a great story. I remember driving up I-95 one night in 1999 listening to Bob tell the story about how he and the 69 Mets witnesses the moon-landing. (There was a full moon that night.) He and the players and other staff were in an airport lounge watching it on tv. he told the story better than i did. I don’t remember him calling balls and strikes that inning, but it didn’t matter.
