Mets Announcer Tournament Final 4: Bob Murphy vs. Ralph Kiner

Yesterday's results: Lindsey Nelson (50.7%) def. Ron Darling (49.3%). It was by far our closest contest yet, and I think we have a terrific Final 4. You can view the updated bracket here. Today's matchup, between two of the three original Mets announcers:

Bob Murphy                     VS.                     Ralph Kiner

Love the Murph

This is a tough one. But if we’re going on teevee tenure, I have to go Kiner because I have no experience with teevee Murph.

I go with what I know

Murph is the voice of the Mets, as far as Im concerned. I got to give him my vote.

this is a Monster Matchup!

I had to go with Murph.

Murph

At least he died, and we don’t have to listen to him anymore.

That is cold blooded.

He retired before he died. Sure, he was around longer than maybe he should have been, but damn.

I voted for Murphy

This is a hard one, but Murphy is the “voice of summer”, in the words of my dad. This is not to take anything away from Ralph, who was great in his heyday and is still insightful when he is in the booth. But one winner means a bunch of quality losers, and I want that one winner to be Murph.

This is truly the Finals

The two best announcers in Mets history. Voted for Ralph, always loved his storys from his playing days. Kiners Korner, classic stuff!

This could easily be the finals

The other semifinal should be fairly anti-climactic (although I could be wrong).

Very tough

I have to go with Murph, who called so many of the greatest plays in Mets history. He was always fun to listen to. But I’m glad that Ralph is still around, because he does tell great stories and it’s fun to hear a guy who called the ’62 Mets.

Murph

is the reason I went into broadcasting (which didn’t end up working out). Still gets my vote. Love Kiner too

Murph should win the damn thing and we can have a happy recap.

This should not be close. Kiner was just not that could. Murphy was great

Murph

I wish I had paid attention and known about the competition before it started. We all knew it would come down to the 4 signature voices of the Mets – Bob Murphy, Ralph Kiner, Lindsey Nelson, and Gary Cohen. It’s too close to call, but for me, Bob Murphy is forever the voice of the Mets.

by dyhrdmet on Mar 25, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

kiner

still watch him on tv and i remember him most. i can’t say murph wasn’t great but i gotta go with kiner

by mets on Mar 25, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

Murph will win...

But Gary Cohen will (rightfully) make a lot of noise…but Murph will win the damn thing by a score of 10-9! ;-)

murph ftw

and we’ll be back in a moment with the happy recap

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
