NYTimes lays the smackdown on Captain Clutch
"Davey Johnson, the United States manager, rotated Jeter and Jimmy Rollins, a better defensive player, at shortstop. The Americans promised Jeter he would be the starter, so they could not slot him as a designated hitter."

They layed it on Davey
there’s no shame in being a worse defensive SS than Rollins. Most are.

Honestly, Jeter was one of the main reasons they lost.
He really needs to get over himself. He’s the most overrated player in baseball.

It's not really his fault they lost.
There’s no reason MLB should have given into his demands. Unfortunately the average fan probably does think Jeter>, or is at least equal to Rollins, so they likely would have seen telling Jeter to eff off as the team not wanting to do what it takes to win.
Also did we ever figure out why Dunn was ever allowed onto the field when they weren’t batting?

Apparently
The only time in the history of baseball that Jimmy Rollins doesn’t win an “intangibles” battle is against Derek Jeter. It’s like Spiderman facing off against Superman.
