Make-The-Mets-O-Meter: Week 2 - Pitchers
We're a week into spring training games and, even though there haven't been any official cuts, and even though it's nigh impossible to draw any meaningful conclusions from spring training performances, we nevertheless have some inkling of the likely fortunes of some of the players in camp.
The pitchers.

|---|---|---|
| Michael Antonini, LHP | ![]() |
Had a bad intra-squad game last week. |
| Tony Armas, RHP | ![]() |
Is he even in camp? |
| Adam Bostick, LHP | ![]() |
A run on a hit and three walks in one inning. Yea, it's just an inning, but he's not going to get too many more. |
| Rocky Cherry, RHP* | ![]() |
Three hits and a run in an inning of work, but he's a Rule 5 draftee so he's got some wind at his back. |
| Valerio De Los Santos, LHP | ![]() |
One inning. One run. Can these guys do anything else? |
| Matt DeSalvo, RHP | ![]() |
Gets a lot of groundballs but doesn't do anything else particularly well. |
| Elmer Dessens, RHP | ![]() |
38 years old. Has had exactly one good year as a starter and zero as a reliever. |
| Nelson Figueroa, RHP | ![]() |
Three innings! One run. One homerun. Two strikeouts! |
| Casey Fossum, LHP | ![]() |
Coupla innings, no runs, two hits, two whiffs. |
| Freddy Garcia, RHP | ![]() |
Roughed up in his first spring start, coughing up four runs on two hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning. |
| Dillon Gee, RHP | ![]() |
One hit allowed in two innings of work. His odds are long, but he's been better than most. |
| Livan Hernandez, RHP | ![]() |
Was un-terrible in the same game in which Garcia got mauled. Still fat. |
| Brandon Knight, RHP* | ![]() |
Not good. |
| Eddie Kunz, RHP* | ![]() |
Hasn't pitched. Is that bad? |
| Tom Martin, LHP | ![]() |
Struck out the only batter he faced. Also, likes killing animals for sport. Manly. |
| Carlos Muniz, RHP* | ![]() |
Bupkis. |
| Jon Niese, LHP* | ![]() |
Not doing himself any favors just yet. |
| Darren O'Day, RHP* | ![]() |
Apparently not injured, the Rule 5 selection from the Angels has thrown two scoreless innings. |
| Bobby Parnell, RHP* | ![]() |
Good: two scoreless innings. Bad: three walks. |
| Connor Robertson, RHP* | ![]() |
Two scoreless innings for the Diamondbacks' answer to Omar Minaya's pleas of "I don't care. I'll take anybody." while shopping Scott Schoeneweis this winter. |
| Heriberto Ruelas, LHP | ![]() |
In camp. Pitched. Not good. |
| Kyle Snyder, RHP | ![]() |
One hit in one inning, a'singin', "Tri-ple-A, just a bus ride a-way". |
| Brian Stokes, RHP* | ![]() |
I like the dude. Two strikeouts and a homerun allowed in three innings. |
| Tobi Stoner, RHP | ![]() |
Soon to be joining Billy Bong Thornton and Wesley Pipes in Triple-A Buffalo. |
| John Switzer, LHP | ![]() |
He pitched an inning the other day, so there's that, I guess. |

Thanks for doing this, Eric.
If only because I enjoy both the Tobi Stoner jokes and the “Livan is fat” jokes. Granted, the latter is really just a fact, but it still makes me laugh.

Can you put a double down arrow next to Garca's name?
He looks awful. Cant even touch 84 on the gun today.
I think we could do worse than Fossum as our second lefty in the pen.
Let’s say that these spots are filled:
- K-Rod
- Putz
- Green
- Sanchez
- Feliciano
That leaves room for a long man and another good bullpen arm, preferably a lefty.
The competition for the long man, let’s say, would be:
- Redding/Garcia/Hernandez (whichever two don’t make the 5th spot)
- Figueroa
- Stokes
- Knight
- Armas (I always had a soft spot for him, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now)
And the other arm could be any one of these guys, let’s say:
- O’Day
- Cherry
- Fossum
- Parnell
So who would you want, out of these guys? I could honestly see Fossum making the team.

I'm hoping Parnell can have a good spring
He throws 98 and has a couple of other good pitches. I’ll be rooting for him.
Also: why has Elmer Dessens been in the majors as long as he has? He’s pitched for eight different teams, and the only one he’s had any success with is the Reds. I’ve always wondered why some guys get so many chances (this guy also comes to mind: http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/limajo01.shtml) and some just disappear (this guy never got a chance: http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/morriwa02.shtml).

Oh. Links aren't working
Well, it was Jose Lima and Warren Morris.

Wasn't as bad as thought or he's pitching through it
whatever the case, I think he he has the most promise of all those listed
I hear you.
And I think he has the most promise. My only concern is the fact we already have Sean Green in the bullpen. But, I don’t know. I could still see him being effective.

That's a legit concern
The fact that he’s a Rule Five also gives him an edge in my book, but I could see having two ROOGYs being troublesome, at least the majority of the league bats RH.
