Heh
I saw the FanShot title and assumed this was an article about how WAR passed away last year. The actual link is much better.
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

Best Mets seasons I can find:
Beltran, 2006, 8.5
Olerud, 1998, 8.0
Gilkey, 1996, 8.0

hmmm
Was Gilkeys pre or post MiB cameo?

MiB came out July 4th weekend 1997
so presumably it started filming in 1996 or earlier. I have no way to know for sure of course, but I’m inclined to guess that Gilkey’s scene was filmed during the 1996 baseball season.

Gilkey was amazing in 1996
I’m not up on how WAR arrived at 43 batting runs or 20 fielding runs, but if you look at the raw offensive numbers it really jumps out at you. .317/.393/.562, 155 OPS+ (still well behind the league leaders but nothing to sneeze at), 30 HR, 44 2B (then and still a franchise record). 5.22 WPA if you like the advanced stuff. Helped immensely by a .363 BABIP and an ISO almost 100 points above his career average.
This being the Steroid Era, of course, I guess it’s natural to wonder – was he aided that year? Recall 1996 was also when Brady Anderson hit 50 HR.

was 1996 any weirder than 1961?
Roger Maris went from 14 to 28 to 16 to 39 to 61 to 33 to 23 to 26 and then fell off a cliff. Is there any doubt that he would be labeled a steroid guy today?
Norm Cash hit .361/.487/.662 in ’61 and never even came remotely close to duplicating those numbers the rest of his career. Jim Gentile hit .302/.423/.646 which jumps out at you when looking at his career numbers.
I know ’61 was an expansion year in the AL, but boy do those numbers look fishy. I hate judging guys b/c they had an anomalous season. That said, Brady Anderson was definitely on the juice…

Norm Cash wasn't juicing
He corked his bats for years.

Did you see Beltran's 1999 season?
Incredible. -2 runs with the bat, but was All-Star level (4.4 WAR) solely by his amazing glove. That, is amazing. Shane Victorino, for comparison, had his best season by far last year, to the tune of 3.7 WAR. Beltran has beaten that 8 times.

Stop bragging.
Victorino has the ring, you know.

You guys need to stop fighting and bragging.
And start helping your team win games.

Well, I think I can help that.
After all, I’m in the best shape of my life.
