Humpday Applesauce
Happy Wednesday to all. Despite the snow-shortened week, I still consider today Humpday. I hope that you all are as disappointed as I am that we will not be able to watch Livan Hernandez pitch today due to lack of TV coverage. Reading a live boxscore just doesn't capture the same magic.
Around Port St. Lucie
Yikes, not really a banner day yesterday for Mets pitching. Johan Santana will probably miss opening day, 5th starter candidate Freddy Garcia can't throw a fastball, and newly celebrated prospect Dillon Gee did not live up to his hype.
Mike Francessa vs. David Wright/Ryan Church heats up. Francessa has so little clout with Met fans that I doubt that he has any chance of winning this feud. If Francessa is hoping to hurt Church and Wright's popularity, he is going to fail miserably. If, however, he is using this stir the pot, create controversy, and gain listeners, then he is a much smarter man than me.
You can't fault the Straw for not being honest. I always identified with the all-too human Darryl.
Oooo.... SNY is making some technical improvements in their broadcast. This is awesome. Watching a bunch of other baseball broadcasts through MLB.TV has made me realize how great SNY is. Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling are as entertaining a broadcast team as there is. The camera work is also far superior. Glad to see they're making more upgrades to their already outstanding product.
What good is 200 IP if they're awful innings?
A-Rod is realizing the joy that Mets fans have had for the past six years.
Around the NL East
The Nationals are confident that Jim Bowden's departure will not complicate whatever "plans" the team had, particularly in re-signing Zimmerman.
I'm definitely not misreading this article. Tommy Hanson pitched three innings yesterday, striking out the side in the first and allowing only an unearned run.
The Phillies are hoping to replace the suspended J.C. Romero with Will Ohman who is playing a little hard to get.
Marcus Giles is looking to catch on in Philadelphia.
Around MLB
This story makes you rethink our attitudes toward the players who disappoint us. I thought of two people immediately after finishing this article: Donnie Moore and Rick Ankiel. While he's not a Met, I'm glad that Ankiel was able to overcome his early career hiccups and become the type of player that he is (even though he had a little pharmaceutical help). Some players, like Moore, are never able to recover from this adversity.
Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make. Would anyone want Soriano over Reyes? The Rangers are trying to pick up the pieces from that whole fiasco and one way to accomplish that would be to get this prospect in the bigs soon.
I wish I remembered what a championship felt like or at least have a vivid enough imagination.
Here's one suggestion to fix the WBC. I really like the idea of playing it during the All Star Break, but I am going to disagree with this analysis in one regard. Say what you will about Selig's reforms, the games have been played at a high level and have been signifcantly more interesting than their predecessors. It's certainly not the fairest way to determine home field advantage, but from a purely personal point of view, I have enjoyed watching the games significantly more than before. 2008's All Star game was a perfect example of an exhibition game played to the highest level and it wouldn't have been that way without the Selig reforms.
Stat Fix
How great was Barry Bonds? Leaving aside the steroid issue, Bonds' career is baseball's greatest by one ranking.
Philadelphia News
Philadelphia's mayor is going to have to raise taxes to fix the city's budget crisis.

Nuts to Francessa
It’s a stupid “controversy.” Not only is his point about Wright not facing up to criticism incorrect, but these guys really don’t owe him anything anyway. If they want to go on the show, fine. If not, fine. I will continue to not listen to his show in either case.
Also, uh, he’s fat.

I stopped listening to those two idiots a long time ago, after Russo left I wasn’t any more eager to listen to solo blow-hard.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
It's amazing how little Francesca knows about sports
Hell, he doesn’t even know that much about the Yankees.

Maybe they could both hit the chinese buffet with Mo Vaughn.

Did someone mention Mo Vaughn and food? Chinese? But he likes sandwiches... Aha! This should suffice!

Do we even need sports talk radio anymore?
Up until about six years ago this was about the only way for fans to voice their opinions on the issues and events in sports. But now with all the websites, blogs, and comments sections available it seems like such an antiquated way of expressing an opinion. Why wait on hold for hours to propose ridiculous trades, (Wright and Reyes for the corpse of Babe Ruth and the frozen head of Ted Williams) or sit through useless talk about teams you don’t care about, when you can go to any number of sport/team specific sites and get streamlined information.
That being said, there are guys I find entertaining and even insightful. But this notion that certain personalities are so important that snubbing them makes you a baby is absurd.
I've missed whatever "feud" is going on here.
Fill me in, fellas. What’s the scoop? Fatty just being fat?

Wow, idiot.
Don’t I remember it being shown that Wright was way more clutch than Rollins during the race of 2007?
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
i think i feel more sorry for the people that are actually influenced by this inane lard bucket
but i guess the people too ugly for tv and too stupid for tv have to work somewhere.

It always made me laugh how
A-Rod netted Soriano who didn’t net Reyes, but ended up netting Brad Wilkerson.
That is one steep tumble for Rangers fans.

Yesterday I noticed that there was some Mets fans who also frequent one of the finest local establishments in the Federal City, Ben’s Chili Bowl. While no one can deny the over powering succulence of a chili cheese half-smoke, I am not as much a fan of their discriminatory practices. Please, Ben, Bill Cosby already has enough free food with his Jello pudding endorsement, he doesn’t need free chili, too.
Wow, just think: free chili dogs AND free chocolate pudding… FOR LIFE. And that, my friends, is why Bill Cosby is without a doubt the most powerful african-american in this country.

When I go there in April
I’m going to get a fake ID with the name Bill Cosby and see if I get a free meal.
make sure you're wearing something like this

this is the second pic i’ve posted this week. i think that’s more than Lou.
I'll catch up. Don't worry.

Wow, that guy is...uh...ok.
I find it funny that he seems so passionate, yet roots for both the Cardinals and the Mariners…

Little bit of Haterade going around today for those who frequent "The Bowl"

Ugh
that Mariners piece ruined my day, solely b/c I had to read this in the comments.
Also important to note, those WAR rankings only go back to the mid-50’s, so they don’t count the careers of Williams or Ruth, both of whom I would suspect would be close to if not better than Bonds. Also would be interested to see where deadball era guys would rank.
Uh, that guy is...uh...hmm.

I have trouble rooting for two teams, ever
I follow the Rays because of local-boy Price, but I don’t really root for them.
