Open Thread: Mets vs Padres
San Diego Padres at New York Mets, Apr 13, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
It's the Citi Field official opener. I'll be there, as I found out a friend had an extra ticket at the last minute. I'll give my impressions later on, particularly of the urinals.

This is the new Mets era
We keep with us our proud legacy of Tom Seaver and The Game 6 in the new age but there is another great epic before us. May the ghosts of every failed September and each spoiled no-hitter remain at Shea! Lets go Mets! Lets go Mets!
You know
For all the talk of how CitiField might depress HR, its going to eat up foul balls as well. Look at that picture, there’s no room to make plays at all in foul territory.

there's a lot more
fould ground around the infield though. I don’t know what percentage of foul outs occur in the outfield vs. the infield, but I’d wager that the large foul ground behind home plate and out to about halfway into the outfield will actually provide more foul outs than Shea did, on the aggregate.

The on-and-off shoulder thing they keep doing is a little awkward. But to have the two greatest Mets ever walking side-by-side is awesome.

A bag of rice wouldn't be worse than Schneider.
Actually, that’s harsh. A bag of rice would surely not be able to be nearly as effective not getting on base, and not getting clutch hits.

one thing though
not to be crass but since Eric mentioned it, this thing with the urinals is no joke. the space is very tight and you are going to have to avoid stage fright and have good aim at the same time. You might have to practice at home.

I'd actually disagree
We have a lot of flyball pitchers and a terrific defensive outfield, or at least 2/3rds of a terrific defensive outfield. Really if we could just get a second basemen with some range and Murphy could develop some range we’d have a pretty sizeable advantage.
Also Reyes, Wright and Beltran aren’t really towering home run type hitters, they’re guys who can drive the ball into the gaps and are pretty good base runners so I would say it suits our beast players pretty well.
I really don't care about the Jackie Robinson Rotunda
and I am tired of hearing about it.
The Giants, not the Dodgers, are the Mets’ ancestors.
both teams are
the Mets have more linage with the Dodgers. BTW Jackie Robinson’s contributions go beyond the Dodgers anyway.
what he did for America
is more like it. The two us of might need separate water fountains still if it wasn’t for what he endured.
I'm assuming you're black
I am too. And if the Wilpons wanted to build a statue for him across the street that’s fine. I still want our stadium to represent our history.
You assume right
The Dodgers are a part of our history here in town and with the Mets we decend from them, the NL standard bearer in NY. It doesn’t bother me honor Robinson with the rotunda, I guess I’m in the minority.
BTW I established your blackness from the Barbados/Jamaica conversation this winter.
Oh okay I forgot about that
I assumed you were thinking I wasn’t because of the separate fountains comment.
eh

Yeah but that was nearly 50 years ago
We have our own history now. the dodgers are in LA. We should be building stadiums that represent US not a team that skipped town nearly 50 years ago.

right but Blue is
the dominant color. All the old school folks who I know from that era were Dodger fans. They’re part of the National League baseball tradition. I don’t have a problem with honor Jackie Robinson in anyway. I understand people would rather it be named after a Met but it doesn’t bother me.
I don't think it's just the honor to Jackie Robinson
It’s that there’s so many references to the Dodgers and so few to the mets history.
well, ok
but blue is the dominant color because that’s good aesthetics, rather than because they were trying to indicate that the Mets were more the successor of the Dodgers than of the Giants
In any case, these are the Mets, not the Dodgers or the Giants, and this should be our stadium
Walter O'Malley was the first to toy with the idea of going west
Then Horace Stoneham. Although it was Robert Moses who screwed O’Malley over, so he deserved the blame Dodgers fans are always directing at O’Malley.

With the Wilpons refusing to go over the salary cap and having to find a starting catcher and first basemen, among other possible holes that could pop up, I’m not sure we could afford another 20 million pitcher. Harry "The K", George Kell, and Authur Richman too ...
I’m a Braves fan … have been since 1947 … and I think our Division will be as competitive as there is in the league, especially when the Nats learn to relax a bit and redistribute some of their talent.
The Old Barbershop isn’t a baseball blog any more than we’ are barbers, but we truly love the game … and three of our ongoing features are devoted to it.
A fourth is dedicated to recently departed friends and notables from all walks of life. The news of the day is that Harry “The K!” Kalas has passed away … a truly great loss from which we will not soon recover. We, along with all baseball fans, feel the pain and mourn his passing. He will be featured in the May update of our “Gone – Not Forgotten” Feature. George Kell and the wonderful Authur Richman died in March and are included in the current edition of the Feature.
Like George, Harry was a great broadcaster … they both delighted millions with their stories and anecdotes, in addition to “calling” a great game. Authur Richman was truly a unique person and baseball writer who wrote and told wonderful stories; beloved and respected by most everyone.
In addition to remembering them, we would like to include as many as possible of their anecdotes and stories in our “Baseball’s Magic Moments” Feature. It’s a repository for such things so that they might be preserved and enjoyed by all … now, and in the future.
I’m sure that some of you have memories and stories about Authur, George, or Harry … or remember stories they themselves related over the years! Funny, interesting ones that they told so well. We hope you’ll share them with us so that they might be included. My email and blog URL are included in my profile.
We all have our memories … magic moments and treasured memories that will one day be lost if not shared.
Thanks!
