Heh

I was trying to find a better source for this news item and failed. I did, however, find this heading at a Jets forum:

DAMN YOU VERDUCCI!!!!!!!!!

'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

I saw a couple of those comments at Metsblog

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s got a bunch of voodoo dolls of young pitchers in a secret room in his basement.

I guess the silver lining is that the tendonitis excuses some of his bad performance.

Dear Liz Lemon: While other women have bigger boobs than you, no other woman has as big a heart. When I saw you getting ready to go out and get nailed by a bunch of guys last night, I knew for sure it was over between us, and for the first time since the '86 World Series, I cried... I cried...

Just like Pedro Cerrano

All offering sacrifices and rum to Jobu to ensure that young pitchers sustain injuries, but only able to use a bucket of fried chicken because his wife won’t let him kill a live chicken in the house.

well

at least the wilpons are willing to spend money to replace pelfrey and/or other starters who may become injured

this probably deserves a fanshot, but i’m in class and feeling lazy this morning

great

glad they decided that months after we missed out on Derek Lowe. Now to add payroll we’ll also have to give up prospects. Sometimes I wonder how the Wilpon’s brains work.

The problem is the only pitcher available right now

Is probably Peavy, and I’m not even sure we could put together a package of prospects/players to get him.

April is not an easy time to shop for an MLB GM

If Pelf’s going to miss significant time, unless Pedro lowers his asking price, we may see a few starts from Niese, and if he gets beat up, maybe Gee?

Maybe Oswalt.

Yeah I think of the 3 big pitchers who might hit the market we have the best chance of getting Oswalt

But the problem is the Astros seem to be dumber than rocks and always convinced they can contend. He has to be on the block before we can trade for him.

by Gina on Apr 15, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope to convince them.

I mean, they have NO farm system. None. Zero. So, honestly, what do they really expect? The only good players on their team are Oswalt, Berkman, and Lee. Wandy Rodriguez is their #2 starter. Read that again. THEIR #2 STARTER. How can they possibly expect to finish above 5th place? They have to completely disassemble that team, ship off all available parts, fire a bunch of people, and begin anew. That’s what they SHOULD do. I wonder what Astro fans think.

No way. As much as I diss Pelf/Ollie

they are better than Wandy Rodriguez, and John Maine is just as good if not better.

Metsblog sure has a lot of orthopedists, or people who like to pretend they are. I love when people break down injuries like they know what they’re talking about. Well, player A had this condition, then got that condition, so it stands to reason player B will progress the same way. Tendon-itis. Swelling of a tendon. Without any more information, we don’t know anything.

by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Apr 15, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

That's why I was looking for more sources

I found a couple other folks relaying “Gammons reported that . . .” but nothing else.

With everything said I still don't give Verducci credit for "calling this"

Where’s the evidence that it was the innings/age that caused this?
I’m going to do the same thing as Verducci, based on 2007 data here’s 10 pitchers who I’m going to pick for the Soko Effect:
Jake Peavy
Brandon Webb
John Lackey
Brad Penny
Carmona
Haren
Smoltz
Young
Bedard
Oswalt

So, how’d these pitchers do in 08-
Jake Peavy – Went from 34 starts to 27 – Injured – Point Joe
Brandon Webb – Same – No Point
John Lackey – 33 starts to 24 – Injured – Point Joe
Brad Penny – 33 starts to 17 and he also sucked – Point Joe
Carmona – 32 starts to 22 and he also sucked – Point Joe
Haren – Better than in 07 – No point, Zona pitchers are exceptions to my made up rule
Smoltz – 32 starts to 5 – Point Joe
Young – 30 starts to 18 – Point Joe
Bedard – 28 starts to 15 – Point Joe
Oswalt – Basically but lost a win in value – No point

By my count, the Soko Rule went 7/10, putting it right up there with Verducci. Candidates for, injury (pitching related or anything else such as slipping on the driveway)/ineffectiveness/whatever else Verducci says counts as a win, this year are:
Johan – NOOOO
Cliff Lee – Looks like I’m right already right
Lincecum
CC
Roy
Peavy – Again? Will they ever learn the Soko Rule
Matsuzaka
Dempster – Called it
Sheets – Called it
Hamels – Looking good so far

Can anyone guess my easily recognizable criteria to be chosen for the Soko Rule?

the Soko Rule

chooses the pitchers with the ten best ERA in MLB from the previous season

by JoshNY on Apr 15, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

While I agree that young pitchers should have their workloads monitored, this 30 inning barrier is arbirtrary. Eric Seidman wrote a great article about in response to Verducci’s calls.

How would pitching 30+ innings cause Yovani Gallardo to tear his ACL? Or how it hurt Fausto Carmona’s hip while covering first base on a routine play? Or, perhaps how it caused Chad Gaudin to slip off of a curb and smack his back on a dumpster… and yes, you read that correctly.

by squid92 on Apr 15, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

We're pretty much between a rock and a hard place

If we trade for Peavy what will we have left in our farm system, unfortunately F-mart probably can’t carry a package himself the way a player like LaPorta could so we’re going to have to give up quanity again, I doubt F-mart+Niese or something would get Peavy. Leaving us with few pieces to fill other holes that might spring up, or holes that will spring up next year, through trades. On top of adding money to the payroll that would likely hinder the ability to replace Delgado and the catchers and other holes that may spring up, for example if Castillo remains awful and we’re suddenly in the market for a 2nd basemen.

by Gina on Apr 15, 2009 11:38 AM EDT reply actions

Well

The only thing is that the FA first basemen are awful next year — no idea who’d be available via trade. You might try to get Delgado back on a 1 year deal, if he plays okay this year. Or patch it up with Murphy/Evans for a year, even though that’d be tough to stomach from an offensive standpoint.

F-Mart > LaPorta, IMO. I’d be fine with F-Mart and Niese for Peavy or Halladay, if those teams would bite. It’s pretty clear we need another frontline pitcher; hate to bring up Derek Lowe, but …

by jasondg on Apr 15, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I can understand whay you think F-mart>Laporta

But it seems like the majority of scouts/prospect analysis disagree. If they wouldn’t accept a package headline by Vitters+some other guys I’d have to look up I don’t think a package headlined by F-mart+ Niese is going to get it done either. I imagine to get Peavy it’s going to be F-mart, plus one of the high upside international guys, and possibly more, like Brad Holt. And I think Halladay will cost the farm system.

Also i was going to talk about Lowe and perez but I didn’t want to bring it up…but since you did already if we signed Lowe, instead of Ollie, we wouldn’t be in the position we’re we need a top tier type pitcher, we probably could have settled for a 3/4 maybe even 5 type pitcher. So, if we end up having to trade for a pitcher, Ollie is costing us his 12 million+ the cost of the pitcher we add+ the prospects+ the inability to fill other holes in the future.

by Gina on Apr 15, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

On the other hand

the Cubs have Vitters and only Vitters. They’ve really got nothing else even approaching Holt or whoever, let alone Flores and Marte — it’s a totally barren farm system. It was really tough for them to put a package together.

by jasondg on Apr 15, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

That's not really true

Just using John Sickels rankings for the Cubs and Mets seem pretty close, Baseball Prospectus seems to tend to agree for fwiw they have more to offer in the way of pitching, higher upsides/closer to majors, and they have the same type of far away high upside guys that we have.

by Gina on Apr 15, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Also just to clarify

I’m not saying we can’t get him. I’m saying it would cost a lot in prospects, plus $$ obviously, which would hinder our ability to make other moves and would cause holes elsewhere. We trade for Peavy now we’re adding, I think his salary goes up to 17-19 million but I could be wrong, in payroll already for next season, even with the crappy 1st base options we might have gone after someone like Bay or Holliday, though I’m not particularly a fan of Bay, and moved Murphy to first which I don’t think there’s any chance of doing if we add Peavy.

And since we’ve likely traded F-mart we don’t have an inhouse option to take over one of the corner spots if we move Murphy to first base, nor do we have pieces to trade for a solution. Our finances would also be pretty limited in looking for 2 catchers, since Castro and Schneider will both be free agents. Plus there’s the fact we’d likely be trading most of our pitching depth, and we wouldn’t have many resources to fill unexpected holes that could pop up during the season or off-season, like if it became apparent that Castillo just can’t be an everyday second basemen anymore.

by Gina on Apr 15, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Murphy

you are not getting Peavy without giving him up. Plus probably Niese and F-mart as well. I don’t think it is possible. I am wondering if Oswalt might be more realistic.

by Endys Game on Apr 15, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Given Nick Evans

I’ve no issue with trading Murphy, who, let’s face it, has no position — in the right deal.

murphy

Despite the muffed fly ball, early indications from UZR are that he’s at least an average left fielder, but likely above average.

by BlackOps on Apr 15, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well most minor league data said the same thing

Although obviously it wasn’t a large sample size there either, there just really hasn’t been any thing to indicate that he’s going to be worse than average. Also, I’m pretty sure we’ve had this conversation, but for w/e reason there seems to be a pretty wide consensus that there’s not much upside left to evans bat and that he won’t be able to hit consistently enough in the big leagues to be an everyday player.

by Gina on Apr 15, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

No way the Mets get Halladay

we could give up our whole farm system and still not have enough to outbid other teams. there isn’t a team in baseball that wouldn’t at least think about trying to get him. We don’t have anywhere near enough chips.

by Endys Game on Apr 15, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe if

they traded like 8 players, a la Roberto Alomar. But it isn’t practical. I’m feeling like now that since Minaya can add payroll now, he’s just getting ready to sign Pedro.

I think we have enough #4 and #5 pitchers. I sure would like a solid # 2. Is it possible to kidnap Lowe and provide him with some plastic surgery and mind altering drugs?

I’m going to talk with my people to see what options we have. It’d be the greatest coup since project MK Ultra!

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
