First SWAG
Whoot! For a variety of reasons, including bad timing and caring for a pair of little Met fans, this is my first SWAG. :-)
The 2009 NY Mets: WE GOT K-ROD! OMG, Putz, too! Sign Lowe! Lowe's a Brave. Sign Manny! Tim Redding, WTF? Sign Manny! Sheets or Perez? SHEETS! Perez?? Oh, Sheets is hurt -- good job, Minaya! WTF?! SIGN MANNY!
Ugh Arsenal and Chelsea is on the same time as the mets game
Once again why does the universe not coordinate these things better.
is that game actually on teevee?
or is there a stream available?

I should add
I don’t know why they or Fox Soccer Channel don’t show this FA Cup semi — United and Everton are on FSC tomorrow.

they're not allowed to do Saturday
games. FOX has the rights. Plus they have NBA playoff games today.
But speaking of FOX Saturday Baseball
Not to complain, but why doesn’t it ever start until the beginning of June? Do they get better ratings in April and May when local affiliates show old, crappy movies?
It takes them until Mid June
to write all the crappy platitudes that Buck and McCarver will spew for the ensuing 4 months.

Yeah like a week into the season
Everyone in nearly every league I was in dropped weeks. So now I have him on like ten teams.
Like I hate to gush and sound cliche
But he just knows how to pitch, which I think is the problem with most of the rest of our starters they don’t know how to use their strengths and weaknesses. Johan knows he can’t just k everyone and blow them away with heat anymore so he’s reinvented himself into a guy who gets weak contact.</end fangirl>
i don't think you're alone in your johan love
i guess we’ll really find out if that smart of a pitcher in the later years of his contract….but his been dominant so far this season

Having to pay for it wouldn't even bother me
If I knew a good portion of games weren’t going to be blacked out because I’m in some awkward area where a bunch of NL markets rights collide.
i DO pay for it, but since a big corporation also paid for it, I get nothing on Saturdays

And they could care less about the fans
as if its not possible to renegotiate the terms of that contract so the games can get viewed by the public. They sell the games twice and, short of getting Sen Kerry involved, MLB will do whatever they like.

But Fox probably plays a crapton for exclusive rights. I do think it’s stupid that they expect people to pay 100+, although it was only like 80 this year, bucks a year when they won’t be able to see any games on Saturday.

And then homer to win the game, demonstrating his clutchness and gamesmanship.

I just gotta share this guys optimism, misdirected perhaps, but inspiring nonetheless
From an article on Pelfrey:
Ever since Nelson made his first start for the Mets last season i enjoyed watching him pitch. Hes not a rotation starter by any means, but he definately can spot start as well as the rest of them. I really like his “quick-pitch” talent, as it definately seems to throw off batters. He goes out there and takes the ball, and when he gets rid of it, he asks for it back as soon as possible and gets rid of it as quick as possible. No need to be concerned with Pelfrey, he did throw a lot last year I do hope they put him on the DL so he can get the real treatment he needs, take a few days off from baseball activities completely, and then getready. better to get it over with now than after the All-Star break, and i would like to see the Mets use a few minor league guys early in the year for some spot starts to keep all the starters fresh once its crunch time. And dont forget, once Redding lands himself on the active roster, he can spot start as well, as overall he isnt a bad pitcher, hes just never played for a good team until now.

Oh, man
We canNOT go without scoring a couple of runs for Johan. The way the rest of the rotation has looked, you can’t waste such a great effort from your ace…again.
Yeah that's the problem
We need to pitch Livan #1 or something and let Santana face off against other teams lesser pitchers.
Exactly.
Much better to BEAT the opposing team’s ace. Which we will do today… Our ’pen is far superior to theirs. WE HAVE THE PUTZ-ROD.

Why does it matter what teams the pitchers are on?
Gallardo is good period. and Johnson was pitching out of his mind last week.
I guess it only matters if you ever want to see Santana win
and by extension the Mets. If they can’t beat the second division with their best pitcher…you think that’s a good sign?

Yeah you do
Cause what you’re saying makes absolutely no sense. When Gallardo pitches the Brewers are WAY better than a second division team, their only weakness this year is their starting pitching, it just happens to be a huge weakness, Gallardo isn’t part of that weakness. If they had league average pitchers behind him they could probably be a 90 win team.
Gallardo has won 10 games in his life

Before last year Lincecum had won 7
Why does how many pitchers a young pitcher with little mlb time has won matter?
oh i see you're right
He’s an all-star because of his minor league stats, and the Mets don’t need to beat second division teams with their ace on the mound. The anemic offense is not a problem. This is a terrific trend. I get it.

No, you're right
The Brewers are an awful team. They def. didn’t win 90 games and make the playoffs last year. And they no longer have Sheets and Sabathia, so they’re automatically awful. They should lose to everyone except the Nats and Pirates (who aren’t as good as them, of course). Which puts them at 23-139 for the year. Cos, you know, superior teams always beat inferior teams.
just got in
I see I have not missed anything game-wise, anything exciting happen worth updating?
3456
Hitters 3-6 not doing anything for the Mets so far, this kid for the Crew must be pretty good.
Santana has a miniscule ERA
.49 it shows. How is he even 1-1? (never mind, I know how)
old fashioned pitches duel going on
Darn, I predicted Mets would score 8 in the SWAG. What was I thinking?
I had it being 6-3
Mental lapse on my part. I forgot about Gallardo’s nastiness because he hardly pitched last year.
Braves and Fish both losing
Love to see that, especially Josh Johnson getting hit around.
Beltran with a base knock
Let’s get another hit and bring him atound, get Johan a lead here. He’s got maybe 1 more inning left.
Must have been a hell of a play
Out in the left field corner, or a major baserunning gaffe by Beltran.
He was running on the pitch
Church hit a sinking line drive, and Beltran didn’t pick up the ball while he was running. The LF made a nice throw, and he was dead.
Break up the Bucs
All of a sudden they are playing good ball, or are the Braves just not as good as all the “experts” have been saying?
It could just be that sometimes lesser teams win?
Also the braves need offense bad. They’re like the exact opposite of our team.
I think the Braves are overrated
But true, sometimes the lesser teams do win. Just not this day for the Braves.
It depends what you mean by overrated
I think they’re slightly lesser than us, but good enough to win the division with enough breaks.
They might win 85 games
With enough breaks. Not enough for better than third, most likely 4th place this year.
We'll see
A lot has to go right for them to win 90. Less so to get 85.
They're an odd team
Lots of pitching depth, but no true ace. Vasquez and Lowe are nice pitchers, but they’re the fifth or sixth best pitchers in the division at best, and certainly not anything close to Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine. They have an Iffy if not competent bullpen. The offense has some tantalizing pieces, but no true MVP caliber guys (at least ones that can stay on the field). McCann could get there, and their middle infielders are solid, but also unspectacular, but their outfield is a huge mess.
I think the appropriate term for the Braves this year is “dark horse”. They have enough durable SP so that you can’t write them off, but it looks like they’ll need at least a bat to be able to take advantage.

Hall let Santana off the hook there
Looked like he hit ball 4 for an out.
11 pitch innings certainly help
Mets need to get him a run or two, give him a shot at a win here.
Crew double switch
So we got rid of Gallardo, time to make the donuts here.
great at bat
Pinch-run? Would be risky. But this should keep Santana in to bunt, assuming they pinch-run. Otherwise it needs to be a hell of a bunt to move him over.
Yeah!
Hoo-ray for shitty defense!

Recap:
Cora got on because Fielder tossed it to Rickie Weeks, who couldn’t handle the throw and let it trickle away (Santos to third). Then Reyes hit a bullet off the pitcher’s glove. Villanueva was able to get the force at second, but the run scored and Reyes was safe at first. And now MVP candidate Castillo with the oppo hit!
lol
lucky us. let’s hit a 3 run homer and end this shit.

How'd we score
MLB.tv crapped out for a bit and I decided to just watch the last few minutes of the Celtics-Bulls (Derek Rose is a beast)
OT
Celts were down 1, Pierce got fouled on a shot with 2 seconds left, hit the first and missed the second free throw.
Un-be-lievable!!
You have got to be kidding??
OK
lead-off single by Hippo, Cora tries to sac bunt but Weeks drops ball at first and Santos (pinch-runner) gets to third, Jose hits bullet off of pitcher’s glove and Santos scores.

Nats threatening to tack on more runs
2 on 1 out for Dukes, bottom 8.

I said no one would get hit
But I also said there would be a homer. And I had the Mets winning 6-3 for some reason, so I deserve to do poorly.
Me too
No big SWAG score for me today. Who predicts 1-0?
He's not in the SWAG contest though
At least as far as I can tell. This would make his third consecutive 1 run game though.
2 k's in a row!!
Stop the presses. Now maybe people will get off Putz’s back for not getting strikeouts, just getting outs.
I don't know if anyone was really getting on him
I think it was just weird, considering how well he was pitching.
I saw some crap

But Reyes has turned it up a notch the last couple games. Three hits yesterday, two more today plus that RBI fielder’s choice that he scorched. Still wanna see some XBH from him, but he’s looking okay in there.

Reyes
Will come around, we all know it. He has to stay patient, like Wright, let the game come to him, let his natural ability take over, not try and do too much. He has a triples ballpark to play 81 games in, once he gets rolling, watch out.
Absolutely
and I’m much happier with how his defense is looking early this season. He just seemed to be lacking that 1/4 step last year that was the difference in plays I was used to him making. He’s doing a better job this year, keeping his head down and just making plays look easy.

A team that should be "panicking"
The Yankees. Their defense is absolutely awful. Beginning with their heralded captain.
What do they expect?
They actually should be a bit better with Gardner this year, but they’re just so bad up the middle. You know you’re in trouble when your best defensive players are corner infielders.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 18, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly
Tex and A-rod are awesome, but it’s like putting fancy rhims on a car that’s been totaled. They’re outfield can’t hit or field.
But even with the bad d i was expecting them to have a way above average offense, obviously with Tex’s usual slow start and A-rod out that’s going to be a ways away. And I expect awesomeness from their rotation, not from Wang though who’s overrated to extents that make no sense.
I think
their season hinges on ARod, if he doesn’t come back at 100% I don’t think they have a shot at the playoffs. I don’t really follow Yankees news, but the last thing I’ve heard is that ARod might be out longer than originally expected and that he might not be 100% for a while after that.
I'm gonna go out on a limb
and say that this was Wang’s last start for a while. 8 ER in 1.1 innings, and his ERA is now 34.50. Yikes.
I don't think it's going out on that much of a limb.
I think a lot of people might agree that at best Wang is their 5th best pitcher. Maybe 6th if Hughes ever figures things out.
He was good 2 years ago.
I personally thought they were gonna have like 3 aces this year.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
No way.
While Joba is obviously more useful in the rotation, he’s not going to be an ace. He doesn’t have the stamina. Pettitte is past his prime, and Hughes is not ready/overrated.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Petite is past his prime
But he’s still really good. And I’m not sure why Hughes is automatically not ready.
Not ready to be an ace.
And honestly, I think Pettite’s overall sum performance for the year = Ollie’s overall sum performance for the year.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
I disagree a lot
Petite’s numbers get hurt a lot by bad defense, which likely will happen again this year, but I think he adds more to the team than Ollie will. That’s assuming something doesn’t click in Ollie’s brain.
He'll go to AAA
To work it out while Hughes gets another cup of coffee with the big club.
I would love to catch NY sports talk radio
Next week to see just how panicky the Yankees fans are.
Hermida
just hit a 3 run homer in the 11th against the Nats. Up 9-6
How is it fair that the Marlins get 6 games against the Nats before we get 1?
Just as long as the last series of the season isn't the Marlins
Its fine with me.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 18, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions
This means though
that in the stretch, we’ll have more Nats? I haven’t looked at the schedule, but I’m fine with letting the Marlins get out to an early lead, get overconfident, when we’ll have our share of Nats games later on.
that didn't work out too well in '07
when we lost 5 of 6 to the Nats the last 2 weeks. They killed us more than the Marlins
It's not 2007 anymore
I think the Marlins have a good shot at being in it at the end, so I’d prefer that they get the easier opponents in early.
take care of business
If the Mets just worry about winning series, as Willie used to say, things will take care of themselves. The Marlins are hot right now, everything they touch turns to gold, every move works. They have confidence because they win, and they win because they have confidence. They are not a 100 win team, not even a 90 win team. But they have good pitching, and that will keep them in a lot of games. So, ultimately, what beats them is a team that executes and does the little things to win, does not make mistakes that beat themselves, and does not sit around and wait for two and three-run homers to bail them out. The Mets can be that team, but all they can do about the Marlins is play them well head to head and beat them. The other teams will have to contribute as well.
It will all even out
Except when the Mets play the Nats the Nats will be red-hot and sweep.
Hermida is a good outfielder
I (unfortunately) catch a lot of Marlin games because they are on locally, so I have seen a lot of these guys the last 4 years. They have some real good pieces (Uggla, Ramirez, Hermida) along with some role guys (Amezzaga, Ross, to name a few) who seem to have a knack for coming up big. But they are not yet built to win. They are rough defensively but they are dangerous if they continue to pitch well. An awful lot went right for them last year to stay on the fringe of the race into August, and a lot is going right so far this year. But they are not the 2008 Rays. They are a hot team doing lots of over-achieving right now. They will cool off. Winning in DC right now is not all that tough.
I'm currenty (pa)trolling the Yanks thread.
“What we need is to trade Wang and some prospects for Halladay”.
This comment came at the end of the top of the 2nd inning, after Wang let up 8 earned runs and brought his ERA up (or maybe it was down) to 34.50 on the year.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
The answer is in house
with Nick Swisher. Leads the team in ERA.
"What position do you play?"
"I bat third."
lol
i love how yankee fans think that they can trade for any player, no matter who it is.
sample metsblog post
The Braves need outfield help. We should trade Sheff/Tatis to them for Hanson. And then we should trade Ollie and Parnell to Brewers for Weeks since they need pitching.
Actually, the Brewers one makes some sense.
Weeks has not impressed the last year or so. He’s kind of regressed. I mean, obviously you can’t trade Ollie and Parnell for him, but he could be available this year.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Meh I think he MIGHT be available
But I think it’s gonna be at a high cost. Even with his struggles he’s been an above average player, he’s gets a bad rap, IMO because people judge him on what they expect him, which is a lot better than what he’s been. I think he, or hardy, will become available because of cost and having replacements in the wing, not because of performance though.
