Recap
- With the win, Johan Santana now has 27 strikeouts and just five walks in 19.2 innings.
- J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez each recorded two strikeouts in the eight and ninth innings, respectively. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the seventh and their two ace relievers shut things down, just like they drew it up over the Winter.
- Mets pitchers combined to shut down the Brewers, allowing six singles and zero walks while striking out eleven.
- Omir Santos scored the winning run and completed a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play to end the game in the ninth. Tell Brian Schneider to take his time getting healthy.
- Gary Sheffield started in left and looked far from awful. I don't expect him to bring much range to the table, but he certainly had some idea of how to play out there.

This could mark the end of the Brian Schneider era. And instead...
the Catro/Santos/Cancel/Thole era!

No offense to Castro, but forget him!
I’d like the Santos/Thole era!
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!
God, I can't stand listening to the FAN anymore.
After a win in which we allowed 0 runs and beat one of the best pitchers in the NL, and a Cy Young candidate…
“The Mets don’t have anyone with character.”
“They need to make more contact. Every major league player should be able to make contact all the time.”
I mean, god. Do they not realize that the reason we didn’t score many runs is because we face the Brewers ace as well? If Santana can control a game, OTHER PITCHERS CAN TOO!

shouldn't everyone on the FAN be freaking out about the Yankees?
kinda figured we’d get a reprieve for a couple of days . . .
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

The FAN
When I was a bartender, I would return home in the middle of the night and turn on the FAN. It was a whole other experience. You could hear the abject despair in the voices of callers – these were people who were losing sleep over a ball game and calling a radio station in the dead of night to unburden their souls. Fuck, it was sad.

Gotta hate WFAN callers
My solution: never listen to it except for games.

Even better
Throw out the first start, and that number is 20:1.

Early Season Run Differentials
Marlins 70-41
Mets 53-45
Braves 45-60
Phillies 54-70
Yankees 63-84
Red Sox 53-57
Not saying it means all that much early in the season, but it should make all the critics of the team pause for just a second – our pitching has been better than all of our rivals except the Marlins, and they’ve played the Nats 6 times. And we’ve scored more than all but the Marlins, Yanks, and Phils, and the Marlins and Phils have both played the Nats.
Citi Field is nice
Was at the game yesterday on an absolutely perfect day for a ballgame. It took me a good 20 minutes to figure out where my seats were (I asked 3 different ushers to point me in the right direction). It’s really a good place to watch a game, and now I’m no longer as opposed to abandoning Shea as I once was.
Also, it’s mind-boggling that the Mets have scored 4 runs in Santana’s 3 starts, and they’ve won 2 of those games. Keep it up, Johan. The offense will eventually come around.
2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?
