Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

Our team still has NO FIRE!

I apologize for the diatribe...

Guys, I haven't posted in a long, long time to this site.  Mostly because it's been hard to get back into caring for our team.  Of course I care, but I'm talking about really caring...I've been too crushed the last few years by this team so, I backed off for the sake of not having an anurism because we gagged it up again.

But, inevitably, I always come back.  It's the Mets for crying out loud.  It's like asking a LiLo to stay away from blow, or asking Keith to shave his moustache...not gonna happen!

Anyway, the point I want to make, why I decided to finally post again, is because I'm very worried about this team.  It's 13 games in, but everything just feels exactly the same doesn't it?  Sure, the bullpen is vastly improved but, this team still lacks heart, guts, onions, fire, passion, heuvos, cohones, sack, confidence, the will to win at all costs.  Do you get what I'm trying to say?  NOBODY ON THIS TEAM HAS A BIG FRIGGIN' SET OF BALLS!  Nobody is willing to exact their will to win over another team.  Nobody holds anyone accountable in the locker room, or is willing to get in anyone's face and DEMAND that they do whatever it takes to win!  This is New York for God's sake...we want players with a passion for playing the game!

Case in point...last night's game...8th inning...play at the plate and Beltran doesn't slide.  And he has the nerve to say he didn't slide because he was "too close to home"  Are you kidding me?  How ri-goddamn-diculous is that?!?!?!!

I'm just going to throw a question out there.  What do you guys think any of the big 4 players in Philly would have done there?  Utley, Howard, Victorino, Rollins.  Whatever answer you may have, slide, hook-slide, head-first slide sneaking the arm in, running over the catcher...whatever your answer is...I'm sure there would be something in common with all of them.  Those guys would have made the effort...and I'm pretty sure they would've scored.

Do you see the difference?  Utley vs. Wright...Howard vs. Delgado...Victorino vs. Beltran...Rollins vs. Reyes.  Do you see the difference?

To me gang, I think it's pretty obvious why our team will be the same joke it has been the last few years.  And I'm pretty sure I know who's going to take the NL East...the guys who bring the balls to the park every...single...day.

"And I'm pretty sure I know who's going to take the NL East...the guys who bring the balls to the park every...single...day."

The groundstaff? Or the umpires?

Look, it’s obviously frustrating to watch this team lose a bunch of close games but I’m nowhere near the panic button at game 13 of 162. Plenty of guys are getting on base and, at some point, the offense will turn around and start driving more of those guys in. The bullpen has been about as good as advertised so far. The starters, Johan aside, leave something to be desired. But I’m not going to speculate that these guys lack passion, or no one in the locker room cares, etc. Beltran’s non-slide in the 8th was pretty ridiculous, but I’m also not going to speculate about what some guy on the Phillies would have done in Beltran’s spot because I don’t know — they weren’t there.

I guess, in sum, I’m saying I trust that the ship will get turned around, the sun came up this morning when it was supposed to rain and there are bagels and donuts in the office because of a birthday or something. I don’t feel the need to freak out.

'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

Yes it's true

Way too early to panic, not too early to express some worry, but we all know this thing will get turned around. And to say that the Follies “fab 4” would have done things differently, well I never, ever want to see, on a METS blog, anyone saying the Follies do anything better. That’s just wrong.

Seeing Frank Thomas when he was at Auburn (I think that’s right) and he was huge back then. So either he’s been using for a real long time or he’s just a big mother! Not a plant...just realism

Another wonderful game last night, eh boys? How about the passion and fire we showed? I don’t know about you, but I could feel it…especially when we proved how efficient a lineup we have by lettting Joel Pineiro set down 13 in a row. Really? Joel Pineiro…THIRTEEN in a row!?!?…Really?

The fact of the matter is, I’m a huge Mets fan, I despise Philly. But at the same time, I’m not delusional and I recognize what has made them, and you cannot argue this, a better team than us the last few years. In my opinion, I feel they have more fire and passion than we do…plain and simple.

Oh, and their manager is willing to bench start players and send a message. The way Jerry tip-toed around Beltran not sliding sucked…bench the guy! Why the hell not?

So, maybe you really are a Mets “fan,” but it sounds like you only come around once in a while to bitch about how bad they are, so excuse us if we don’t take you too seriously.

Also

Utley vs. Wright…Howard vs. Delgado…Victorino vs. Beltran…Rollins vs. Reyes

I’d take Wright over Utley seeing that Chase is on the wrong side of 30 and has some injurt concerns.

Howard I’d take over Delgado since he’s a lot younger, even though he’s not likely to finish with the kind of career numbers Delgado will end with.

Beltran vs. Victorino isn’t even close, and Victorino is a good player. Beltran, Sizemore, and Upton are the big 3 in CF in baseball today.

I’d take Reyes over Rollins for the same reason I’d take Wright over Utley. Younger. Will still be good 3 years from now.

I'd keep Granderson in the same conversation as Upton/Sizemore/Beltran

And Reyes was decidedly better than Rollins during the last 3 years total, and Reyes’ 2006 season>Rollins’ 2007 season. So I’d take Reyes even just for this year.

right, but Jimmy has heart!

Seriously, how hard is it to look at last season and conclude, “Hmm, Phillies beat us by 3 games. They had a PHENOMENAL bullpen (which is due for some regression this year) and we had a horrible one. That more than makes up for the difference in the standings. Case closed.”

but the last 2 seasons what have we done down the stretch, and on the last day of the season? Against a team that was already out of the post-season…at home no less. Are you going to drink nothing but Diet Coke and talk about yourself for the next 5 & 1/2 hours too?

How can you say I’m juding them off one game? Can you honestly say you don’t see a consistent theme with this team the last few years? There’s a body of work here and it speaks for itself. We’ve been in control of our destiny and we’ve blown it…aka…3rd in the league in average, but 11th in runs!

If I was truly judging off one game, fine…I’d be rolling from your post, but you can’t tell me this team hasn’t had issues getting timely hits the last few seasons. There’s a body of work here, not just 1 game…

I'm going to say this once.

Every. Team. Goes. Through. Slumps. It has nothing to do with lack of “heart”, “soul”, or whatever. It is simply a matter of baseball being a game of failure, and unfortunate timing.

"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"

by squid92 on Apr 23, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Clearly you don't get it

Really? Every team goes through slumps? In baseball? Slumps…in baseball? You don’t say! Thanks for the enlightenment.

OK, sarcasm aside, I wasn’t talking about a slump. Of course teams and players go through slumps, that’s the nature of the game.

My point is that there has been a pattern with this team, and so far this season, I think it’s repeating. If you don’t feel we’ve been a listless team to start this year, and if you don’t feel there are no character issues with our Mets, fine, more power to you. I just think there’s too much eveidence going the other way.

by Pedrito on Apr 24, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

But "so far this season" only encompasses like the last 5 or so games. And the season's only like 15 games old.

And wait a minute. You weren’t saying anything before about “character issues”. As much as I disagree with you on the heart and grit, I didn’t think you thought they had “character issues” as well.

I thought the “pattern” was the Mets were a bunch of choking chokers who choked in September. That’s what the News and the Post tell me anyway. How do we know that pattern is repeating when the “important part of the season” is still five months away?

by JoshNY on Apr 27, 2009 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions

If you think there's any chance

That this team finishes the year something like 3rd in team average and 11th in total runs scored, I’d kindly like you to connect me with whoever sold you such a potent substance. As a matter of fact, last year, among their NL competitors, the Mets ranked higher in total runs scored (2nd) than they did in team average (4th), OBP (4th), slugging (6th), or OPS (4th).

by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 25, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

doesn't win when it counts

I saw the Mets blow a 4-run lead to Milwaukee at Shea last April and lose. Had they won that game, they’d have made the playoffs too. You can’t hold them to one game at the end of the season.

Also, the Mets took the season series from Philadelphia last year. I guess Rollins and Victorino’s grit only worked its magic against Atlanta.

I’d love for him to go to another (non-NFC East team, natch) and win a Super Bowl. The Jets would do.

It was really embarrassing when Jeff Garcia came in a few years back and had a nice run of competence filling in for the injured McNabb. He became a folk hero. Which is kind of amazing considering he’s only sorta-white and about 40% hetero. It was a strange time.

i'm late to the game

but this whole post is a joke… right?

If you ever meet David Wright and Carlos Delgado, you should definitely tell them that their problem is that they just don’t want it enough.

wait

Also… doesn’t Utley kind of seem like a selfish, ball-less dick sometimes? I grant you your perception that Victorino is firey firecracker of winning passion. But Utley? How is that a firey dude?

Do you guys remember when he had that 30-something game hitting streak? And he wouldn’t talk about it? That’s because he wanted to break the all-time record for consecutive games with a hit. That is not about your team winning. That is some glory boy shit.

Wow I hadn't heard that hit streak thing

If true, that’s pretty weak. However, I bet it was portrayed as “Utley wants to be true to the superstitions and traditions of our great national pasttime.” Meanwhile if Reyes did that he’d be portrayed as a selfish prick.

exactly

I was talking to my brother about this, and I realize I didn’t quite articulate this point. Imagine if a black or Hispanic guy did something like that.

on the other hand...

Maybe it’s because Utley didn’t want a clubhouse circus to distract from the team’s goals. They were in a playoff race at the time. They frittered away a Wild Card lead in 2005 when Rollins had his own 30+ game streak. I never heard anything about Utley avoiding the press to avoid “jinxing” the streak, although I’d be willing to be proven wrong.

You conclusion is plausible, but kind of a Point A to Point C leap.

Agree, though, that Utley is one of the more stoic players on the field, and I don’t understand the “fiery” title. Not that I think any less of him.

Utley seems decent enough

My one and only gripe with him: at least TRY to get out of the way of an inside pitch sometime. Its in the rules, your supposed to do it, make some effort to fake it at least.

yeah

It’s pretty unfair of me to call him a dick. But, yes, at least he can be considered stoic.

The point is, he is not someone I would consider fiery. And I wonder if he gets extra fire points because he’s a white guy. Maybe, maybe not. But it’s worth asking the question.

probably right

It’s kind of like the “Jim Edmonds = gritty gamer, Gary Sheffield = asshole” disparity.

This thread is still going?

What this team lacks is a GM who recognizes a steal when it presents itself and thus fails to acquire Jaiver Vazquez from the White Sox for a bag of balls.

Instead he signs The Next Sandy Koufax. Sigh.

2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?

And even when failing the trade...

he fails to sign the actual good pitcher, instead of someone selling on promise without results despite the fact that he’s 27.

I can't believe it's still going

but let’s not get started on Ollie P…although I’m sure I’d have more people agreeing with me on that issue than the one in this thread.

Let’s just say, I’m not convinced the 3 year deal was a good investment. Although, the Castillo deal looked like a disaster last year but has improved so far this year. Who knows right?

I’m not convinced the 3 year deal was a good investment.

Hopefully I can convince you.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
