Be positive man
Of course it will be a good thing. The Mets will win tonight.
I think
I predicted the exact same score lol.

I predicted 5-3 Mets
Who in their right mind will ever predict a loss by the Mets? Don’t we all think they will win them all?
Sweet
Another 8:00 game, I get to watch Jonah Schwartz and Joe Beningo try to act like they know anything about baseball for a little while.

It's great that ESPN has the game
But am I going to be subjected to John Miller/Joe Morgan, or the second team? Can’t wait for the sniggering comments about last nights’ game from whoever is doing the PBP broadcast. I’m sure I’ll be hurling insults at my TV screen during the pre-game commentary.
I hope Steve Phillips is with them too
in the same way I hope I someday crash my car into a nuclear reactor
When I bought MLB 2K9
And realized it was him instead of Joe Morgan, my head nearly exploded. So many mixed feelings on that one. I was happy it wasn’t Morgan, but they found the only possible replacement that wouldn’t be an improvement of some sort.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 22, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Well it's the second team
Some guy I’ve never heard of before and that ex-Cub pitcher who suddenly thinks he’s the smartes thing since sliced bread. Actually, I think sliced bread is smarter.

I will not be watching the game here tonight
Impromptu boozing with co-workers is about to take place. Hope y’all have fun and don’t nobody go killing themselves tonight if the Mets lose. Hoo-ray optimism!
Let’s Go Mets!
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

have fun
Love those impromptu booze sessions.
If there's drinking and driving
Someone will be.
God...
I hope Murph makes an outstanding diving catch to shut these ESPN commentators up about the Mets and “all of their problems, because they have a lot of em”
I caught that comment also
It ticked me off plenty. I hope Murphy makes them choke on that comment.
cardinals fox people
are just as annoying
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
Mets choking
Means Follies did not win, undermines their accomplishments the last two years. Is that what you’re trying to do? Good job!
I hate Rick Sutcliffe
Being a halfway decent pitcher for a couple of years does not translate into being a good broadcaster.
Fox gives us a nice little
thing about TLR deciding his lineup. he sounded drunk. and it wins the award for “most awkward banter between a reporter and a manager.” Apparently Ludwick is sitting because he’s gotta sit sometime. And rasmus has to play. duncan is a real rally starting guy. i really don’t like him.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
woo
good start. lets’ win.
castillo got hit number 1700 last night.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
at his pace of 154 hit a season since becoming a regular
he’ll be closing in on 3,000 sometime around 2017, which is probably about when the extension Omar’s destined to give him should be running out
according to fox
wright has 1 rbi this year. no. he does not.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
What a dumb comment
“If they could have added on some more runs last night they could have won the game.” No kidding Rick? Really? You are a genius.
What an unclutch line drive by Wright
If that was Eckstein, he’d have gritted a three base error out of a weak ground ball or something.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 22, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions
More bad luck
Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you. Right now (and lately) the Mets are being eaten alive.
control
our pitchers don’t seem to have it.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
That can't be a good thing
Maine’s fastball is just too predictable.
and still had a decent K year
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
Maybe it's just me
But I just don’t feel confident in getting Ks from the guy. Don’t ask me why, but thats how I feel.
probably b/c of the foul balls
he seems to have trouble putting guys away a lot, which is what makes his pretty good K rate even more impressive. If he had a true out pitch he could be great. Unfortunately, it’s looking less and less like he’ll ever have one
Mets will need some magic
To get out of this without major damage
Hey!
Murphy made a nice catch there. That’s ok, it’s only one run. Boy Pujols just missed that.
nice catch?
I could’ve made that. It was a can of corn

Keep the focus Maine.
I laugh at your sarcasm
Hahahahahahahahahaha…….

Decen change to start Ankiel
79’s a good changeup speed for Maine. Just couldn’t get it over. I guess that second pitch was a change too.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 22, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions
It should be 2-0
Rasmus should’ve gone to third on the fly ball.
And no, Church has been awesome. Murphy is teh suck defensively, but other than that the D has been awesome
did you guys know ankiel used to be a pitcher? thanks dave obrien!

Breaking news
I did NOT know that. Thank God for the wisdom of that announcer.
Is Rick Sutcliffe serious?
Sheffield is a gold glover, apparently.
false
Gary Sheffield has never won a Gold Glove. it took me eight seconds to look that up. good fact checking, ESPN.
no, but
this announcer was extolling the virtues of putting sheff in left field. for defense.
by DevonEdwards on Apr 22, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions
right, I got that
I’m just agreeing with you about how wrong he was. Plus, I mean, he could’ve just said “Sheffield is a good outfielder” and that would be his opinion, but by saying “Sheffield is a Gold Glover” me made an incorrect statement of fact.
he didn't say that per se
it was my exaggeration of his own comments

I don't get it
Sheffield hits a majority of his 500 homeruns for teams I either hate or am at best indifferent about (Marlins, Braves, Dodgers, Yankees), and somehow I’m supposed to be really excited for his 500th homer b/c it came in a Mets uni? It was his friggin first homer for us. And I like Sheff and think he was a good signing, but I have no attachment to that moment.
Yeah, what's the big deal
I don’t get it either.
Clutch-tron
Way to go Carlos. Let’s remember you can slide now.

small small samples of course, but he looks worse, no good contact.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
Church has done that his whole career though
He’s always had some really hot stretches, and never quite been able to sustain it long enough to put together a full season well above his career averages

Murphy seemed to take
A bit long to release that throw. Cards dissing the Mets for running the pitcher on Murphy. We must make them pay for that.
Great throw by Murphy
and we should have had him. Castro didn’t block the plate!!!!
He did seem
To give him the plate didn’t he? What’s with that? Hasn’t he been watching Molina?
Castro should be blocking the plate there
unforgivable
Can't get a decent
DP grounder so another run comes in on a productive out. Just what the Mets are not getting done.
walk to the pitcher leads to 2 runs
shameful John Maine
How many times
Does that have to happen before pitchers get the idea?
Sutcliffe?
Did he not want the Mets to throw home and almost get the out at the plate?

Good point, unfortunately

Here you go
Maine in trouble in the first, gives up one run on a Pujols hit, wriggles out of the jam. Mets hit into DP’s in first two innings, tie the game in the third, then Cards get two back as Pujols drives in yet another.
and a one-pitch unproductive out
That was awful.
Not so
Cards made one in their half that brought in a run.

If it were so, it’s either irresponsible putting him out there, or he hasn’t told anyone.

When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
do I want to watch the Mets now that the Rangers game is over?
I honestly don’t think I do, it’ll just be a letdown
Here's my shitfaced Game 14 Assessment:
Daniel Murphy sucks as a LF (both offensively and defensively), but would be awesome as a 2B. Thus it is unfortunate that Luis Castillo has lucked his way into a good early season batting average. The Mets will thus be committed to Luis as 2B and Murphy as LF for far too long.
89-74.
wouldn't call it luck
he’s hit a lot of balls hard.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
What evidence is there
That he’d be a good defensive 2B? I mean, its tough to cost your teams as many runs as Murphy has as a LF, but what makes you think that would be any different?
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 22, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions
well he was pretty average at 2nd and third in the minors
and I dont think he would have ot be good. just not awful.
but the problem is if murphy went to second now who would be our everyday left fielder?
Tatis maybe
I can’t imagine Sheffield lasting long if he had to play everyday in the field. And basically we’d just be replacing question marks with more question marks.
We would have signed someone offensively worthy of the position
That is, if we had a front office that used a valid methodology.

there was no market, except for the dodgers
Omar (and many mets fans) thought the offense was all set. I continue to beg to differ. Plus it would have been a bargain in years. And until one has caught a fly ball, highfived a fan and doubled up a runner, i dont think one can criticize the awe inspiring defense he provided. It’s that simple.

All 3 are horribly defensively.
But Murphy isn’t exactly Endy Chavez.
by JohnPeterson on Apr 22, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions
But his bat is above average
unlike Murphy who’s been shaky defensively and likely won’t provide an above average bat.
Very streaky
Prone to extended slumps, and if he slumps in Great American Bandbox, how bad would it be at Citi?
What hitters aren't prone to slump/streaky?
And look at his home/away splits. His numbers definitely didn’t seem to be inflated by CBP.
You are remembering him fondly
He would not have been a good option, IMO.
Why?
And what have i said that was fond? He hit better on the road, which stats clearly show, and everyone slumps. What hitters can you name that don’t go through slumps? Other than maybe Pujols.
I liked Burrell as an option over Dunn
similar types of players, Burrell’s not quite so much of an extreme and he’s right handed though. He always seemed like kind of a strange hitter. He’d go through these super aggressive and super patient stretches, not much inbetween. And he definitely has a hole in his swing. But he would have been an interesting option IMO

by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 22, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions
It is.
I think the problem here started with thinking that Luis Castillo was worth 4 years.
The early-2009 average notwithstanding.
by JohnPeterson on Apr 22, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Absolutely
But I think that will be a bigger problem with Reese Havens next April than it is for Murphy right now. If they’d planned it from the beginning of last year and made Murphy a full time 2B in the minors, maybe. But they weren’t going to hand him the job to learn at the big league level. Its tough to learn a new position, and its not like he was some kind of stellar third baseman, he was adequate, but fairly unspectacular.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 22, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
None
John’s argument is likely that Murphy would be approximately as inadequate at 2B as he is in LF, but that his bat would play better there.
Exactly.
As a LF, his bat is mediocre. As a 2B, it would be well above average.

Murphy has gone from hero to zero on this site in a matter of days. Maine may not be all the way back from his operation etc. They are not playing any worse than they were at this point last year. Some of you are getting a little over the top in my humble opinion
Mets are in a rough stretch
I wrote earlier today that they were similar last year and by the AS break they were right back in it. There’s plenty of time.

I don't think most of the people on this site have really changed their opinion about Maine
But I think going into the season it was pretty obvious our pitching staff after Johan was likely going to struggle and was full of question marks, so far our pitching staff after Johan has done nothing to alleviate these concerns. Maine and tRA
What was that thing regarding tRA and his Marlins performance? I would think that with 7 Ks, few walks and 2 fly balls that left the park, tRA would have been kind to him.

Interesting
Even if Maine gave up a lost of liners, I would have thought 7-8 Ks would make up for it, especially since he’s a fly ball pitcher.
I’m still relatively bullish on Maine. He’s got his velocity and movement. His secondary pitches look better than I remember them being since I’ve seen him. His control is not happening now but he’s not a historically wild pitcher.
I see a lot of bad luck in these two starts. And an ump who seemed to have it in for him. (Not to say that he wasn’t wild or bad, but when Darling is talking about how he would have some words for the ump, you know it’s an issue.)

thing about Manuel
There are good things and bad things
He makes totally inscrutable moves and gives away outs in droves as early as the seventh inning with ridiculous sacrifices. (But in the Tatis at-bat with 1st and 2nd in the eighth in a tie game, where it might make sense to bunt, he doesn’t do it.) He puts players on at the wrong time and makes absurd substitutions.
On the flip side, he does have some form of meritocracy in place and he does tend to put his best relievers in high-leverage spots, winning or losing. And you can listen to the guy talk and he seems to have a handle on his players, which you can’t ignore.

Chalk it up to the full moon
it was a strange game all around. Not bad like last night but never felt the Mets had a chance, especially after the third inning.
They really need someone to step up in the rotation though
Its tough to watch. Three guys have now made three starts, and only one has had more than one good start. The other guys hurt, and the other one is, well, Livan.

Bump Johan up to tomorrow. They’re not gonna do it at this point, but I wish they would.
