According to metsblog
Following tonight’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters he will use a different lineup tomorrow, with Alex Cora starting at second, Gary Sheffield in for Daniel Murphy, Omis Santos behind the plate, and probably bat Carlos Beltran third, with David Wright batting fifth.

Unless Castillo's begging for a rest

That part seems a bit excessive, but I have no problem with the rest of it. Especially putting Beltran in the three hole, he belongs there right now.

Whose going to bat 2nd though? Church? I could see that, I know Jerry likes to use the two hole to try and get hitters going again.

well at least manuel is being proactive

the team is obviously in some sort of funk, so it’s good manuel is willing to shake things up in the lineup. but it’s sad that this team already looks do downtrodden two weeks into the season.

Minaya needs to be fired

If this season goes down the tubes, that is. Because if it does, it will be because there was one decent pitcher in the starting rotation when guys like Javier Vazquez and Derek Lowe were available.

2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?

by Greenpoint Ian on Apr 22, 2009 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

I don't actually think the season is over, of course.

The Marlins are coming down to earth (swept by Pittsburgh?) and the Braves and Phillies are off to bad starts too. Let me know if the Mets still have such a huge discrepancy in OBP and runs scored come July.

Agreed

Nothing gets decided in April. There is plenty of time. But I want to have to stop saying that, very soon.

IF the season goes down the tubes.

I really still think this is no big deal so far. But IF, and only IF, the season goes down the tubes…then I absolutely agree.

I understand the shakeup

Insanity = doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So I understand the changes. And the Mets do look lethargic. But all the lineup changes in the world will not fix what’s wrong with the starting pitching. Warthen needs to find some magic fast. And Cora is a severe downgrade over Castillo, so that one is a bit odd, as others have stated.

Ugh

I keep telling myself it’s only April, but I’m just so frustrated and worried about this team. Livan Hernandez is our 2nd best starter? ugh ugh ugh ugh

Not to harp on one thing but...

This was probably mentioned in the game thread but I wanna make a point: So Murphy was getting killed all day in various forums about his defense. Radio, print, online you name it. Fast forward to the 3rd inning with one out with the pitcher on second, Rasmus on first with Pujols batting. Pujols laces a ground ball through the 5-6 hole and it is fielded by murphy and he comes up throwing to home plate, with the pitcher running home. The throw was on the money, even takes that one hop that you’re taught to do when throwing home. The ball beat him to the plate—except Castro is behind the plate and allows the pitcher to walk in. 2-1 cards

First off, why the hell is Castro not blocking the plate? The throw was on line if he was blocking the plate, we’d be talking about how murphy answered his critics for one night by getting an assist and that he actually has an arm and so forth. That 2-1 score with one out turns to 1-1 with 2 outs and Maine gets the next guy so now its 1-1 going into the bottom 3rd instead of 3-1.

Second, let’s ignore the score and the situation just for a moment. Everyone on this team knows that Murph’s getting killed about his defense. (Murph was in plain sight for a long time (40 mins?) talking to reporters after that game). Good teams pick each other up in tough times. So, at this point, Castro should be doing everything in his power to make a play for his teammate. Just a rough play for Castro all around.

by meigs1414 on Apr 23, 2009 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

Good point

Castro misplayed his position there and cost the Mets a run and Murphy a feel good/redemption moment. Maybe it changed the game, we’ll never know. The Mets had no life after that, and were finished when the Cards added 2 more next inning.
I have a prior engagement today and will miss the afternoon game. I expect the level of running commentary to continue to excel in my absence. Look forward to seeing what y’all write about the game, and really looking forward to a Mets win coming back to Citi.
Let’s go team!

Im too hopeful

I scored a dang ZERO in the swag contest last night. I was terrible last night. But on the plus side while the Mets were giving me a ZERO, I was drinking beers and eating pizza.

More good news

I missed the ballgame and got drunk.

'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

More good news

the awful paper I just turned in that will likely result in me failing out of college/life, doesn’t seem as bad when I realize I have 148 games left of this.

by Gina on Apr 23, 2009 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

Don't worry too much.

It can’t be that bad of a paper. And speaking as someone who’s taking the scenic route through academia, let me just say that one paper isn’t the end of the world.

obvious freshman!!!

one bad paper does not a life ruin. yes, yoda just got in on this shit. one bad paper/test/exam means so little in the many classes you’ll be taking, it’s not worth really worrying about. especially if it’s for a gen-ed class. those are an f’ing joke and a waste of time.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
