I really would like to meet the person who defends the silly premise that:
“Uh-huh! We leave men on base, but that’s not such a bad thing. At least we’re getting them on base. Uh-huh!”
Please, explain to me again why this is such a good thing when you can’t bring them home?

Is this the kind of immature response that pervades this blog?
For the most part everyone here seems to be respectful, courteous and informative. Why would you want to lessen the blog with such a childish response. If you’ve got an opinion, feel free to state it, but try doing so in a manner that doesn’t demean the blog. If you want to be rude, try Politico or the Huffington Post.
The “we can’t score” statement was a generality. Perhaps I should have used “we can’t score enough” based on the numbers of people we leave on base. The Mets are horrendous at this. Can anyone explain why; other than, “how the bat comes off the ball”? Perhaps there’s something that the manager is doing wrong. Is he not recognizing bunt or hit and run situations. There’s obviously something that’s NOT being done becuase the Mets have a habit of leaving men on and NOT bringing them home.
This point has been discussed here ad nauseum. Something is wrong but no one here has bothered to or is smart enough to demonstrate what exactly ‘that wrong’ is.
by OVERALLSPORTSFAN on Apr 24, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions
There's little doubt
Certain members of this offense are “pressing” at the moment. I think there are a few other reasons for the large LOB numbers early on. For one, the Mets have gotten close to zero offensive production from their Catchers. In the first few games, when Beltran and Church were the hottest hitters batting 5th and 6th, and Brian Schneider was OPSing like .400, that was a big time rally killer. The station to station baserunning bugs me a bit too. This team hasn’t attempted a straight steal in a while, not counting Tatis’ ill advised swipe in the last game at St. Louis (and the balk on Church’s attempt). But also, not taking extra bases, not scoring from second on a base hit. There is an element of aggressiveness there that seems to be lacking.
But I think the biggest thing in a lot of these cases, its a statistical anomaly, a small sample size fluke. D-Wright is 5 for 22 w/RISP so far this season. That’s a .227 batting average. Well, guess what? If he goes 3 for next 3, that would be 8 for 25, a .320 average. There is something to accounting for the plexiglass principle here, which simply means that when there’s an unusual statistical divergence, like a disconnect between OBA and Team Runs, it will likely normalize over a big enough set, just because such a statistical disconnect is unlikely to begin with, and its equally unlikely to repeat itself over and over again.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 25, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions
To add to that thought
I also think that offense and pitching are related in a way that isn’t always immediately obvious. When you’re pitching is constantly putting you behind, you can’t play with the same kind of offensive aggressiveness. You can’t hit and run as much, you can’t steal bases, you can’t take extra bases. You have to play for the big inning, instead of forcing the action, and that can make a team seem “lethargic”. I believe this was a big part of the Mets late-game offensive woes last year. Their bullpen was so awful, it took away a lot of their offensive strengths, such as baserunning and manufacturing runs.
As for why they’ve scored so little so far for Johan, I think the reason for that has more to do with Aaron Harrang, Josh Johnson, and Yovanni Gallardo than it does anything else.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 25, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions
Thank you for taking the time to provide this lucid and very interesting analysis.
I have one question for you in regards to your second reply post.
When [your] pitching is constantly putting you behind, you can’t play with the same kind of offensive aggressiveness. If the manager believes that he can’t be aggressive on the basepaths with his runners due to the fact that his pitching staff is likely to give up runs, wouldn’t it induce him to act in just the opposite manner?
He realizes that his bats most likely aren’t going to produce optimal power by hitting homeruns so, he needs to take an aggressive stance by attempting to steal more often and being more proactive in regards to emphasizng hit and run plays. He needs to put the pressure on the defensive players for making plays if he knows that the pitching alone (you mentioned Harrang, Johnson and Gallard) is overwhelming the batters.
It seems to me that one unorthodox method of producing offense if pitchers are dominating otherwise productive batters is for the manager to do what’s least expected. If runners are on 1st and 3rd with an out or less and Beltran or Delgado is up to bat, why not attempt a bunt towards the 1st base line? Certainly this isn’t the traditional method of produdcing offense with such ‘large’ bats but it definitely wouldn’t be expected and it would most likely catch the defense off guard.
J. Manuel had these players execute intensive hitting drills during spring training; did this include bunting? There are numerous ways to create offense. It’s high time J. Manuel attempted other methods other than rotation juggling.
by OVERALLSPORTSFAN on Apr 25, 2009 4:47 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree with your sentiment
And I think baserunning has been a big offensive issue so far, and my one real peeve with the offense as a unit so far. But my point was more about when you’re playing from behind, like when you’re down two or three runs in the middle/late innings, rather than anticipating your pitching giving up more runs. Unless you’ve got your fifth starter out there, you don’t really anticipate giving up lots of runs. But if your pitcher has already given them up, and you find yourself training 5-2 or something in the 6th inning, the offensive options narrow a bit, and station to station, bloop and a blast baseball becomes the advised method.
As for the bunting idea, I don’t think you’ll ever see Beltran or Delgado squeeze. While its not necessarily a terrible idea, over the long haul, you’ll get much greater run production letting those two swing away with runners on than you will by bunting. Sure, you’ll get your share of strikeouts letting them swing away, but you’ll also get your share of extra base hits to go along with singles and sac-flys. Plus, its not like these guys are particularly experienced bunters. Beltran knows how to do it, and Delgado’s caught defenses napping occasionally with the bases empty, but I can’t imagine bunting practice is a big part of the routine for the Carloses in the spring. What if they bunt it right back to the pitcher? Instant double play. Better to take the chance they strike out and hope they hit one into the gap or at least lift a flyball.
Aside from baserunning, I would advise Jerry NOT try to do to much to change things offensively. He’ll just breed more tension and tension will breed “pressing”. The runs will come as long as guys keep getting on base and putting the ball in play. I think he actually needs to do less rather than more. IMO, Jerry has taken over the running game too much. He needs to let his baserunners do the decision making. intelligent baserunning is a strength for this team, and its not being taken advantage of appropriately.

Leaving men on base is not good
But getting them on in the first place is good.
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

The history of baseball statistics has shown
That the relationship between OBA and runs scored is strongly correlated. There isn’t a huge range of divergence, over a large enough sample size, between how many runs a team might score with a good OBA. So a teams OBA can be considered somewhat predictive in terms of how many runs a team should be expected to score.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 24, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Noted.
This is the rule. The Mets seem to be the exception.
by OVERALLSPORTSFAN on Apr 25, 2009 4:48 AM EDT up reply actions
In a small set though
Exceptions are the norm in a small sample. Look at the OPS and batting leaders around the league. You can bet Carlos Beltran won’t have a .400 batting average after game 162, and Jimmy Rollins won’t have a .400 OPS either. Its the same with team stats. Its only 16 games, 10% of the season. As the set gets bigger, wacky statistical outliers will creep back towards the norm. You won’t see a disconnect between team OBA and Team Runs that’s multiple standard deviations apart.
I don’t know if you’re a poker fan, but think about it this way: The best poker players will experience far more “bad beats” than the worst ones, and the worst players will deal far more “bad beats” than the best. This is because the better players will wind up in situations where they have a large statistical advantage more of the time. They’ll get their money in with ah 80% chance of winning a big pot, but they’ll still lose that pot 20% of the time. So in any individual hand, the better player may lose such a hand. But if you repeat the same situation 100 times, the better player is going to win a ton of money. He won’t win each individual hand, but he’ll win far more than he’ll lose.

But its not entirely game of causation
Its a game of probabilities. A batter can’t always control what the ball does off his bat. He can’t control where the fielders are positioned or what kinds of plays they are able to make. He can to a certain degree, but look at that last play, Dukes misplayed that, and a runner scores from first. Before that, Johnson was positioned off the line on Santana’s hard hit grounder, and was able to get the out at home. He didn’t have to position there, but he was.

I would just like to post this from Jerry Crasnick's chat on ESPN

How did he escape from the self contained Metsblogosphere? He’s making Mets fans look bad.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
And this, from the Jayson Stark chat.
dave (mpls.): it just seems like the mets don’t have anyone who really wants to be a clubhouse leader – not even manuel. they’re all pretty damn good players, but they seem reluctant to step outside of their egos, take hold of their team, and shake it a little to wake it up.
SportsNation Jayson Stark: I don’t know whether these guys are “reluctant to step outside of their egos.” But I do see a team that lacks the grit of the Phillies. They don’t play with a lot of fire. They don’t do the little things. They don’t give you that we-not-me feeling. So is that because they lack leadership, or because the pieces, talented as they are, just don’t fit. This is the year I think we’ll find out, once and for all.

I can think of only two instances where I enjoyed the wave:
1) when I was a little kid, my family was at a game at Shea where they asked the crowd to do the wave so it could be filmed for “Three Men and a Little Lady”. Little me loved that shit.
2) Last year in England, I was watching a cricket match between my beloved New Zealand Black Caps and the dreaded English. My drunk Kiwi buddies kept trying to get a wave started — they would yell “5, 4, 3, 2, 1 WHEEE!” and start waving but the English folks in the crowd would not comply. The non-compliant English would get booed mercilessly each time. This went on for about 15 minutes, maybe 10 or 12 attempts at getting a wave started. It was hilarious.
