Alright Ollie
Lets see if we can get two quality starts in a series. Yes, QS is kind of a weak stat, but when you’re getting 1-2 max each trip through the rotation, it can be rather instructive.

sweep this joke of a team
2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?
What I remember seeing
Good stuff, but the hitters seemed to pick up on what he was trying to do to them the second time through, and he makes his share of mistakes, but not many over the plate with the slider and his fastball is good enough to get away with a few mistakes.

Wasn't Jose's fault
Beltran hit a weak flare in front of Zimmerman, who Reyes was trying to follow in on his lead. Zimmerman caught it on a hop and wound up in a rundown, but Reyes was dead to rights either way just with the weird way the ball was hit.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 26, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Jose messed up
Either go back to the bag, or start running immediately. He did neither and it cost the Mets (until Delgado’s triple, at least).

Nah
He couldn’t start immediately with the ball in the air like that, he could have gotten back but it would have had to be an instant reaction and after it didn’t happen, he did the right thing.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 26, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions
To be fair, that was a tough play.
If he kept moving, and Zimmerman caught it, that’s a DP. But if he stays, Beltran’s out, and there are two outs with no runs scored.

agreed
I was a little disappointed we didn’t get Braylon, but that disappointment has faded. I think Reese has done an unbelievable job. The fact that he’s picking guys I’ve actually heard about in the 4th and 5th rounds is impressive
Same.
I think we did basically as well as we could have in the draft. Like, we weren’t realistically getting Crabtree or Maclin. But Nicks+Barden+Beckum is good. Very good.

I may be in the minority
but I actually like what the Jets did. I really like Sanchez (more than Stafford, for sure) and don’t think the Jets overpaid for him. The two defensive players are easily replaceable, and Sanchez is better than Ratliff. Basically, the only valuable thing I see them giving up is next years #2, which is a small price to pay for a potential franchise QB.
Stintim and Beatty are 1st round talents that we got in the 2nd, so I'm thrilled about that.
And we just got Andre Brown, RB.

I like the Brown pick a lot

Omar will look stupider to the average fan if Omar signs Odalis and said average fan sees that the superior Perez was available for $34.5 mil. less than Ollie.

Could be
If it is, he’s using his hands MUCH better this time instead of trying to rely on his lower half. Four years ago that would have sapped much of his offensive prowess, but he’s definitely shifted his approach so far this year.

F!Mart, Holt, Havens, Niese, Thole, Ollie, Castillo
Omar’s future will depend on those 6. If enough of them bust, even the Wilpon’s won’t stand for Mini-Maddoff Minaya
I will not allow the denigration of the life essence
Flores?
Davis? Marte?
Davis already looks like a bust (secretly I’m rooting for them to convert him to a pitcher), but if Flores or Marte become stars it won’t matter if Havens or F! bust
But they may not be up in the majors in time for Omar to be judged.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
true
some people on here certainly hope. Personally, I’m torn. I think Omar is far from the worst GM, but he’s also far from the best. I’m just afraid that it’s going to take more than just missing the playoffs again for the Wilpons to fire Omar – my biggest fear is we miss by less than 5 games again, Omar stays and decides to listen to the media and breaks up the core.
Agreed
Though I just can’t imagine any legitimate baseball person breaking up this core, at least not Reyes/Wright at this point. On a small market team and if the Mets had won 70 games last year, maybe.
But I do believe the criticism that Omar has tried too hard to fix last year’s problems rather than the upcoming problems is legitimate. He didn’t do anything after 2006 except trade away some interesting young arms for organizational fodder. In 2007, the Mets had a solid back half of the rotation but didn’t have a #1. So he got the #1, but did little else, and the bullpen fell apart. Now he’s fixed the bullpen, but the back half of the rotation isn’t pitching to the standards of 2007, and its not like it was completely unpredictable.

I would say no.
And I’m not torn on Omar. The guy’s team-building methods are the same as his public speaking qualities. Disorganized, disoriented, vacillating, incoherent.
I will not allow the denigration of the life essence
to clarify
the reason I’m torn is not b/c I want Omar to stay, it’s b/c I don’t want the Mets to lose enough to justify firing him. I don’t think the Wilpons will do it until the bottom falls out, and I don’t think the bottom’s gonna fall out until Omar stupidly gives away the core.
You say this basically every day

Maybe Ollie's next start
in Philly will shake him out of it. Unfortunately Johan is going to miss all 5 games against them.
Ugh
I hate to agree with rash decisions early in the season, but it does seem like Ollie needs to get himself straightened out in the minors. Maybe its the WBC, but he’s not even right for Ollie. His avg fastball is down about 1.5 mph from any other time in his career. I don’t even know if I could let him start in Philly given that, he just doesn’t have the command to average 89 mph on the fastball, and its not like his other pitches have been anything special.

Unbelievable
If a third-place finish is what it takes to get rid of Minaya, I personally don’t have much of a problem with it. This is to say, it is better than a 2nd-place finish where Minaya stays.
He won’t break up the core though. He’s not stupid in that way.
Look at it this way. Through 2011, Minaya has ~ $56 million invested in Francisco Rodriguez, Luis Castillo, and Oliver Perez. Reyes, and Beltran are free agents in 2012 and Wright in 2013 (Reyes and Wright have options, respectively in those years).
This is to say. Omar has more money than a few small-market payrolls on a relief pitcher and 2 albatrosses and Wright and Reyes will each command close to $20mm per year by 2013 (unless Wright really can no longer hit a fastball). This has the potential to get ugly very quickly and Omar is not the man to work this situation out.

Wright can still hit a fastball.

Another silver lining is if the Mets break up the core
And Omar gets to decide who replaces them.
That would make for some grand comedy. It will be from Ewing to Isaiah Thomas allover again.
I will not allow the denigration of the life essence
that's not a silver lining
that’s a tragedy. I’d rather be Othello than a mets fan if that happened.
And in 20 years
when the Mets are finally good again, they’ll miss the playoffs a couple of times and it will happen all over again. No lesson learned. Nothing.
Remember Mets fans, no matter how many great Mets get run out of town, we’ll always have Mike Francessa.
The use of the words "silver lining " was intended ironically..
I will not allow the denigration of the life essence
