Doug Glanville: Someone Had to Go Once Sheffield Arrived
A particularly sentimental look at Marlon Anderson's release from the NY Mets from his old friend Glanville. Clearly Glanville hadn't watched as much of Marlon lately as we all have.
I was unaware that Marlon was only months away from full pension status, although Glanville manages to ignore the guaranteed money that probably gives Marlon some comfort while he looks for a new job.

Yeah I didn't know about the pension status either
But at the same time, like you said, his money this year is guaranteed. And since 2001, according to ESPN’s, he’s been paid about 5.5 million. I think he’s gonna be okay.
Pension
This isn’t a NYC police officer pension, it’s a MLBPA pension. I’m sure Marlon will forgive me if I can’t pine over this as readily as Glanville can.
Well
To paraphrase the wise words of Patrick Ewing, maybe Marlon makes a lot of money but he might also spend a lot of money too. QED.
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

We gave Marlon a lot of crap
But I always enjoyed his PAs in 2005 and 2007. He was one of the quirky bright spots on those otherwise disappointing teams. It just seemed like he was a lock for a line drive as a PH.

Good thing more journalists aren't friends with players
If they were, we’d have to hear a heartbreaking editorial about how someone was cut before they could collect their pension. And he only made $1,050,000 last year! sob
i saw this on shysterball
here is the biggest piece of bs i have read in a looooong time, quoted from glanville:
“Marlon’s style was different; he flicked his wrist as he threw the ball, using physics and aerodynamics to emphasize accuracy, not power. He didn’t have a rocket arm, but the ball got there just before the runner did, and that still constitutes an out. "
That’s totally retarded. marlon had a nice year as a PH a few years back and i dont hate him or anything, so sure, it suck he missed out on a full pension but i consider that 2 year contract omar gave him that he never deserved a gift. an extremely generous one.
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON. WE WANT THE MANSION NOT THE CONDO.
I believe Glanville also referred to Marlon as a "revolutionary" fielder
this was news to me.

but he used physics! and aerodynamics!
I bet Vladimir Guerrero’s arm barely even uses high school algebra. And I heard a rumor that Rafael Furcal’s arm doesn’t understand trigonometry at all. But Marlon’s arm is practically an engineer. Marlon makes educated throws. What could be more revolutionary than that?
