Hoo-ray for day baseball!
Boo for having to attend workplace lunch for co-worker’s birthday.
I’d like to see at least seven innings out of Johan today but, more importantly, I’d like to see us beat the Marlins before heading off to CBP for the week-end.
Let’s Go Mets!

Hoo-ray
For work-at-home days! The “cable guy is coming” and so therefore I got it switched from tomorrow to today. I’m so clever!
Oh, right. Let’s go Mets!
Murphy batting 3rd
hmm. So he doesn’t play all week, doesn’t get starts when we need a two hitter w/out castillo in there, then bats third when Shef needs a day off?

Broadcast just showed
A man and a woman sitting down to a nice lunch in one of the fine dineries at Citi, complete with a cosmo (for her) and a bottle of nice chianti (for him). Wonder what that set them back?
Those two
will be doing the wave come the 8th inning.
Those two
will be on the LIRR come the 8th inning
by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Apr 29, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
well if it was the aecla club
I think the lunch is $28 pri fixee. Figure the cosmo is around 12 or 14 and the bottle of wine could be anywhere from 40-100 or more depending on the quality. So I figure they dropped at least $ 175-200 including tip and tax.
Cantu owns us
what the hell?
Do we hate him now?
Howie and Hagan
just all but declared the game over.
I noticed that too

Welcome to Triple Field
This park is going to set records. I love it.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!
The single season record is 36 set by Chief Wilson in 1912
Go get ’em, Jose!

possible.
I was thinking more like, the record for triples by players of either side in a park for one season.

Seems like he has become a guess hitter
Which means he doesnt trust his hands anymore. Beaten by fastballs upstairs, and frozen by curves down the pipe. (Sigh)
I know
I’ve thought that many times this year. I know it’s obvious and I’m sure it’s been suggested, but maybe he needs to have his eyes checked? Because he hardly ever struck out looking until this year.
For one thing
I think he’s consciously trying to avoid swinging at the slider that breaks down and away — might be overcompensating. His April numbers aren’t far off from April ‘08, so let’s just try not to overreact — another month of this and I’ll be worried.
I trust
That he will rebound as he has in the past. The thing that bothers me is this doesnt look like a normal David Wright slump. When he normally slides he gets pull happy and trys to jerk them out of the park. He’s just plain getting beat now by fastballs that he normally squares up and at least hits hard.
I think you're right
Toward the end of last year, he’d become a real breaking-ball hitter. But when he’d slump last year, it’d be because he was swinging at those bad sliders and curves away, so this year he’s trying to spit on those pitches, but the thing is, you move them a few inches towards the middle of the plate, and that’s the pitch that Wright was hitting a lot of his homers on.
Things always change though, pitchers change how they pitch hitters, everyone always has to make adjustments. The thing that’s always been somewhat consistent about Wright slumps is that he doesn’t catch up to good fastballs, and that’s what’s been going on now. He’s actually taken some better swings on fastballs the last couple games it seems, but he’s just not comfortable and taking way too many pitches.

Right
obviously, Santos is the next Piazza and only Ramon’s “high” salary — which is less than Cora and Redding — can save him. Idiotic.
Considering they were trying to move him before the off-season
Because, for reasons unknown to anyone, a team in NY that just opened a new stadium was burdened by his 2.5 million or w/e it is, and considering his injury history I don’t think it’s that ridiculous.

A minor example is that I didn’t know whether that ball through wright was a two bagger down the line, or whether the left field would get to it and hold the hitter at first until after the play was over.

Gah.....
That was horrible. Wright just looks terrible at the plate and in the field. He needs to stop listening to his coaches, I think.
Santana's K rate
has been really, really good this year.
Wright has been great in the field
and that ball was smoked accoridng to the radio. I think we are ganging up again.
Should not HAVE been an error...

well it was Wayne Hagan so I couldn't be sure

Sacrifice bunting is still considered a legitimate strategy even with your best hitter up. One day, it won’t be but, for now, we just have to sigh.

I'm an old school guy
I enjoy watching hit and runs and steals and whatnot, but even I acknowledge that sac bunting with anyone other than a pitcher or a really bad hitter is just a terrible idea, unless it’s like the bottom of the 9th in a tie game or something and even then it’s probably not a great idea.

You slide into first base

I'm pretty sure he did it
becuz he didnt want another double play. Better sacrifice 1 out then chances for the next 2 batters, beltran and wright.
Well
If you never sac-bunt, you are at a disadvantage because the defense can adjust accordingly. You need to surprise sac-bunt some of the time for maximum advantage.

Tale of Two Teams
The Marlins’ 8th and Mets 9th tell you where these two teams are. Both given two walks to open the inning:
- The Marlins bunt perfectly, get a single to score two.
- The Mets get a predictable strike out, ground out and — even given a third free base — a popup. Had Wright merely moved the runners, we could have tied the game easily.
And that, my friends, if the clutchness and gritness you so mock.
The 2009 NY Mets: WE GOT K-ROD! OMG, Putz, too! Sign Lowe! Lowe's a Brave. Sign Manny! Tim Redding, WTF? Sign Manny! Sheets or Perez? SHEETS! Perez?? Oh, Sheets is hurt -- good job, Minaya! WTF?! SIGN MANNY!
Who gives a snot?
Do you remember last season when Dusty Baker asked Dunn to sac bunt some idiot over, and Dunn couldn’t do it (because why would he know how to bunt?), and when he got to two strikes, he swung away and won the game with a walk-off home run?
And then later in the season, pretty much exactly the same thing happened again, except with Edwin Encarnacion?
That’s why you don’t do that there. Because: why would David Wright bunt a baseball?

And yes, David Wright should have bunted, because he's hitting like garbage right now, and he could have put two runners into scoring position for Church and Tatis, who are both hot

David Wright is hitting ~.230 with RISP, and has struck out in like 30% of his AB's this year...watch the games bud...and yes, i realize that hindsight is 20/20, but i would have bunted anyway, that's just how I FEEL ABOUT IT...
couldn’t have worked out worse than it did…
Sure it could
Wright could have bunted into a double play, and then you don’t even get a chance with Church since he’d just get walked.

No, if your best hitter is up, you have to believe in him.
You are officially a David Wright hater.

Here's what happens if Wright gets a bunt down
They walk Church, and you take your chance with Santos and Reed. Personally, I’ll take my shot with Wright and Church.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 29, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Still
I’ll still take my chance with Wright and Church over Tatis and Castro then. Its still a no brainer.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 29, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Are you high?
Set up a double play, avoid the lefty hitter, his run didn’t matter. Why wouldn’t they walk him?
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 29, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Shh, it's all he has. Don't take it away from him...

Serious Question: do you suffer from Finger Tourettes?
Just wondering. You know, about the random caps and such.
Because if David Wright tried to bunt
For what would have been maybe the third time in his professional career, and popped into a double play or something, people would be screaming that Jerry doesn’t know how to manage anyway.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 29, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Did anyone after Wright get a hit?
No.
So, by sac bunting there, you give away that out for free. Why not let Wright try to hit a single?
If you think Wright is hitting so terrible right now that he is not capable of getting a single, you’re crazy.
batting helmets. batting titles. obp.
You really think they'd pitch to Church
with one out and runners on 2nd and third and Castro on deck?

Why are you trying to reason with him?
Metzfan22 = Marty Noble. Someone check his IP address.
See, this is what I like to see.
This is the comment I — as someone who doesn’t really care about the Mets — go to MetsBlog for. So I can laugh.
Glad to see it invading AA, too.
Jerry post game
SAying Santos has a shorter swing and thought he might have a better shot against a guy throwing close to 100.
Look
Shit happens. Maybe it’s for the better. Maybe we’ll realize that Jerry isn’t right for this team, and guess who’s coming in for him? Good ole Bobby V!
Everything happens for a reason, right? So give it time. Maybe the team rallies around this loss, and DW turns it around.
Maybe we shouldn’t whine after every tough loss, and take it like men. There are still more than 140 games to go in the season, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to cry about being 8-11.
I think everyone needs to calm down
silver lining, if we continue to fail the wilpons might decide to go in a completely opposite direction with the front office.
silver linings are dumber than bunting
Who wants to sit through continuing to fail?
batting helmets. batting titles. obp.
can't calm down
like cerrone said, this team isn’t trustworthy and they’re not inspiring us. need to freak out.
Because of the April 2009 NY Mets . . .
englishgrey will never love again.

Fine, but that also scares me
for all we know, the “new direction” could buy into this “the core is rotten” crap and trade our guys.
Doubt it
Wright struck out on ball one. That pitch was high. I’m not going to kill my franchise player for taking a pitch he should take and getting screwed on a bad call. But yes, everyone has to calm down.

Ok, you'll all probably rejoice, but I'm done with this stupid site.
You people see through blue and orange glasses, and watch the game with calculators instead of your eyes. You all continue to make excuses for losses, as if the Mets CONTINUE to do the right thing. Something CLEARLY ISN’T RIGHT when the Mets are having the same problems they’ve had for two years. Someone differs in opinion, and they’re no longer a Mets fan or a smart baseball fan? I’ll go to all the other great Mets sites, and talk the games over with people who actually watch the games, thanks. Enjoy the rest of the Mets season, guys.
Enjoy your phone calls to the FAN

This is all gonna seem really petty
when the Mets are in contention for the playoffs in September and we’re all cheering for the same team.

God forbid
we have a little optimism and perspective. And I can’t speak for anyone else, but I don’t watch games with calculators, I watch them with this:

Something clearly isn't right when someone gets this worked up about a baseball game in April.

I don't think many smart people think others are somehow watching their games on calculators.
Not being a smart person makes it hard to be a smart baseball fan.
But what's your point?
You’re talking as if Jerry just followed the Metzfan22 school of baseball, things in the world would be right. I’m not that optimistic at all, I think the way this team appears to be constructed, they’ll have to get lucky to win 90 games. But I still enjoy baseball, and enjoy watching it, and understand that asking one of the best players in franchise history and one of the best players in the game today to bunt is not a good way to win ballgames.

Hate to break up this negativity but its April
Yes they have problems, but they can be fixed with 140 games left to go. This was a rough one for D-wright and the gang but let’s focus on the big picture: Philly on friday and the friendly confines on CBP, where the hrs are plentiful and the starter’s ERA is a lot worse than the mets era! so get this crap out of your system now and get ready for a great baseball weekend.
Yes
I don’t really care about the Mets losing games. It sucks to lose, but it’s not anything that I’ll get worked up over.
What works me up is that the hoi-polloi are out for blood. They want Wright to be their human sacrifice. This scares me because of the long term effects for the Mets and it bugs me because it’s unfair to Wright.
I will not allow the denigration of the life essence
Ugh
I was just starting to feel better, then I turned on SNY. Big mistake. Some dummy is talking about Phil Hughes “must win double digit games” to prove he’s legit.

Oh god, now Brandon Tierny is complaining that Wright didn't bunt
I think I’m going to go throw up.

I love beating a dead horse...
For what its worth, Francesca basically said that its a dumb idea for wright to bunt there. If Jerry orders it, Jerry gets killed in the papers. If wright acts on his own, it shows his lack of self-confidence at the plate and gets killed even more in the papers. Same idea about Beltran bunting on his own when Beltran is in a slump
The worst part of all this
if/when the Mets go on a big win streak (a la mid-2008) the credit will go to some sort of renewed sense of hustle and effort and leadership, rather than performances evening out in the long term.
Didn’t watch or follow the game today due to being fisted by my job, but from the looks of it there was no reason to bat Omir for Castro. Didn’t singlehandedly cost them the game, but just another odd choice by Gangsta’s Paradise
by James Kannengieser on Apr 29, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions
It singlehandedly lost them a chance to unlose a game.

Wright needs
to get drunk on something the rest of us couldn’t afford with his lady friend tonight. Although I’d bet he’s in the cages right now.
