Open Thread: Mets vs Reds

New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds, Apr 6, 2009 1:10 PM EDT

This is it. Meaningful games. Our year, our time, our team. The new Mets. Baseball like it oughta be. Ya gotta believe. Anything and everything is possible on Opening Day. Everyone has World Series aspirations, some more reasonable than others. The Mets have spent a ton of money on this team over the past two seasons and currently have the highest payroll in the National League. We can criticize upper management all we want for one silly move or another, but eventually the talent has to go out there and perform. For 162 games, I mean.

It's raining in Cincinnati, but if the weather clears up we'll see Johan Santana and Aaron Harang at Great American Ballpark. Opening Day: Does it get any better?

The swag contest is up and officially counts beginning today. Read more about it here.

Oh yea, and Let's Go Mets!

Whoo-Hoo!!!

Let’s go Mets!

If the weather holds up, I am going to Opening Day at Camden Yards, so I will be ‘watching’ the game from my blackberry. Ima play the original version of the “Meet the Mets” song about 10 times today just for fun. Opening day is so so fun.

He graded them in 5 catagories with Grand Slam being the highest

Ambiance: both Parks got HR
Food: Yankee-HR Citi-Triple
Bathrooms: Yankee-HR Citi-Double
Extras: Yankee-HR Citi-Triple
Stadium Name: Yankee-Grand Slam Citi-Single

But Citi field has the best burger the host has ever eaten yet only gave Citi a triple

by Major on Apr 6, 2009 12:52 PM EDT reply actions

he's right about the name

CitiField is ten kinds of stupid.

Here in Baltimore, people like to give Peter Angelos shit for making dumb moves and being a bad owner, but he never sold the naming rights to some dumb company, and as a result they have one of the classy stadiums in the country – Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It is next to M&T Bank Stadium, which is another place with a crappy name.

Disagree

Wright had no business looking at the ball which is why he hesitated. The third base coach will tell you what to do. You don’t make that choice on your own. Had Wright ran on contact and picked up Shines waving him home he wouldv’e scored easily.

by Major on Apr 6, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

But Shines should have realized that Wright was going super slow and known the conditions

Bases loaded and one out and Church up? I think that would have been smarter in this weather.

For those not watching:

line drive by Beltran to right, bobbled by the RF but Bruce stayed with it.

Wright starts running to third, stops halfway, hesitates…and then doesn’t hustle around third base (looked pretty wet) and then hesitates AGAIN and then gets thrown out by 15 feet.

Should never have tried.

Bases would have been loaded for Church. Beltran’s single was hard and got to Bruce well before Wright got to third. Even after the bobble, he picked it up before Wright turned. Throw beat him though it bounced twice.

That's what they were doing all last year

They kept hearing people say the bullpen sucked, and they wanted the relievers to prove the critics wrong…they didn’t.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
