Open Thread: Mets vs Reds
New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds, Apr 6, 2009 1:10 PM EDT
This is it. Meaningful games. Our year, our time, our team. The new Mets. Baseball like it oughta be. Ya gotta believe. Anything and everything is possible on Opening Day. Everyone has World Series aspirations, some more reasonable than others. The Mets have spent a ton of money on this team over the past two seasons and currently have the highest payroll in the National League. We can criticize upper management all we want for one silly move or another, but eventually the talent has to go out there and perform. For 162 games, I mean.
It's raining in Cincinnati, but if the weather clears up we'll see Johan Santana and Aaron Harang at Great American Ballpark. Opening Day: Does it get any better?
The swag contest is up and officially counts beginning today. Read more about it here.
Oh yea, and Let's Go Mets!

Whoo-Hoo!!!
Let’s go Mets!
If the weather holds up, I am going to Opening Day at Camden Yards, so I will be ‘watching’ the game from my blackberry. Ima play the original version of the “Meet the Mets” song about 10 times today just for fun. Opening day is so so fun.

I'd be shocked if they get it in at all
37 degrees and wind and drizzle ain’t exactly prime baseball weather.
What happened to yesterday’s beautiful weather?

Lets get this season started!
The excitement is in the air regardless of the fact that its raining. BTW Brave fans are already printing Jordan Schaefer MVP/ROY T-shirts
Knowing ESPN...
…they will say Fenway is superior and never allowed a single player who used steroids in their locker room.
"The people of Houston are spending money like oil's selling at $40 a barrel."
He graded them in 5 catagories with Grand Slam being the highest
Ambiance: both Parks got HR
Food: Yankee-HR Citi-Triple
Bathrooms: Yankee-HR Citi-Double
Extras: Yankee-HR Citi-Triple
Stadium Name: Yankee-Grand Slam Citi-Single
But Citi field has the best burger the host has ever eaten yet only gave Citi a triple
he's right about the name
CitiField is ten kinds of stupid.
Here in Baltimore, people like to give Peter Angelos shit for making dumb moves and being a bad owner, but he never sold the naming rights to some dumb company, and as a result they have one of the classy stadiums in the country – Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It is next to M&T Bank Stadium, which is another place with a crappy name.

Should be a good year for the contest. More competition, and the Ollie Perez rollercoaster will make a mess for everyone.

1:20 seems to be it
the forecast seems to be getting worse there as the day goes on and tomorrow as well so I suspect they are just going to try to cram this one in. This baby could def be shortned by rain or even snow
Screw it
I’m hungry and time’s a-wasting. Off to the bar, then.

GREETINGS FROM LA!
it’s a great day. opening day. and i don’t have to be at work for another 2 hours. perfect time to catch a few innings of the ’09 mets while eating breakfast.

lineup optimization
i don’t remember the thread — was batting wright 3rd and beltran 5th a good thing or a bad thing?
Overall, lineup construction is pretty meh
as long as its not completly f’d, it makes little difference. Batting Wright 2nd and Beltran 3rd is probably optimal but it’s not a big deal.
oh christ
angel hernandez is on this crew. great.

This is the inning
Steve Phillips proclaims he could of traded Reyes for Cruz
Churchie raced in to shalow RF, slid and made the catch but bobbled it, got back on his feet quick to get the runner
I feel like everyone gets it wrong with Murphy
His defense seems like its gonna be around average, every where he’s played, but his bat doesn’t play everywhere.
3 pitch at bat
the shortest one in the game so far. people really taking pitches on both teams.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
Strikezone has been off,
according to gameday, and the pitchers got to have trouble getting a good grip on the ball out.

When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
I don't agree
wet track and that ball was hit too hard. Wroght did look awful though
Disagree
Wright had no business looking at the ball which is why he hesitated. The third base coach will tell you what to do. You don’t make that choice on your own. Had Wright ran on contact and picked up Shines waving him home he wouldv’e scored easily.
But Shines should have realized that Wright was going super slow and known the conditions
Bases loaded and one out and Church up? I think that would have been smarter in this weather.
"I got my pregnant wife (the Yankee fan) with me. Hoping my kid learns to kick her everytime the Mets score." -Schifftis-
For those not watching:
line drive by Beltran to right, bobbled by the RF but Bruce stayed with it.
Wright starts running to third, stops halfway, hesitates…and then doesn’t hustle around third base (looked pretty wet) and then hesitates AGAIN and then gets thrown out by 15 feet.
"I got my pregnant wife (the Yankee fan) with me. Hoping my kid learns to kick her everytime the Mets score." -Schifftis-
Should never have tried.
Bases would have been loaded for Church. Beltran’s single was hard and got to Bruce well before Wright got to third. Even after the bobble, he picked it up before Wright turned. Throw beat him though it bounced twice.

"I got my pregnant wife (the Yankee fan) with me. Hoping my kid learns to kick her everytime the Mets score." -Schifftis-
Oh I don't think he'll maintain those type of numbers
But I think he’s a serviceable back end of the rotation type starter and I think with his hitting he’d be pretty valuable in a long relief role.
CHONE has him pegged at a
4.29 ERA. He was throwing 90 in 07 and 88.9 in 08, it’s a small difference speed-wise but it’s pretty important when you throw 70% fastballs.
lol

if i wasn't writing an essay that's due in 45 minutes
i’d find examples of how retarded that statement really is.
but i am.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
i mean, owings is a very good hitter
and he most likely is legitimate. but because something happened over 100 AB? manny hit .396/.498/.743 over 187 AB in LA. manny’s good, but not that good.
one difference between the two
Manny’s performance in LA last year was over ~50 games – that could just be a protracted hot streak. Owings’ hitting has been over three seasons and has been good each of the three. It’s still a small sample size of course, but not a great comparison IMO.

The more range you have, the more errors you commit.
Willie Mays once made 40 in a single season.

The study gogo is mentioning
found there is no correlation between errors and range. Can’t remember the link, fangraphs perhaps.
Doesnt make sense
If I am a slug and get to 10 balls hit into our zone, and you have great range and get to 20 in the same zone, would law of averages say you will muff more than I will?

Well, it kinda makes sense
But I don’t know if it creates that much of a disparity.

Put that in your books and smoke it!
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

This is totally unrelated to the game
But MLB’s black out rules are beyond stupid. I go to school in North Carolina, but apparently I can’t watch baseball games with the Orioles on ESPN because they’re in my market.
Yep.
I go to school in the northern part of Carolina closer to Virginia, but I’m from Georgia and I could get Braves games on ESPN there.
I guess Northern part of Carolina kind of makes sense for Baltimore
pre-nationals anyways. MLB said they were going to go through the blackout jurisdiction again to get them up to date, but guess they didn’t get around to it.
I've gotten just Braves games my whole life.
w/the occasional cubs game
The day WFAN realized they were streaming the games for free on their site, was a sad sad day for me.
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
Braves games
You poor bastard
