[Recap]

The more things change, the more they yada yada yada. I'm not going to rag on the bullpen tonight. They weren't good, but it's the second game of the season and the Mets won anyway, so it's hard to get too worked up just yet. If they start pulling this crap on a regular basis then we'll all be within our rights to piss and moan about it, but I'm going to abstain from bashing them right now while reserving the right to do so at my discretion sometime in the near future as the situation demands.

Mike Pelfrey gets some good marks and some bad ones for this game. Bad-wise, he gave up four runs in the first inning after Carlos Delgado handed him a lead. Good-wise, he picked things up after the first and managed to hang in there for five innings, keeping the Reds off the board for the final four. This game the bullpen a chance to work their magic.

Offensively, the Mets were on their game, banging out ten hits and seven walks en route to nine runs. Every Met regular drew a walk except for Carlos Delgado, who decided to knock in four runs on two hits instead. Carlos Volron drove in two runs and Brian Schneider knocked in three on a bases-loaded hit that was generously scored a double.

Marlon Anderson struck out in one of his (hopefully) final at-bats with the Mets. Livan Hernandez is set to be recalled on Saturday, so Anderson is the likeliest candidate to be expunged from the roster to make room for Fatty Fat Fat Fat.

Oh God, those were the best!

If you or anyone else was on Metsblog last year for one of the Reds series, in the postgame especially, everyone was throwing around Dick Pole jokes at will. It got so that the next day the comments section was closed on that thread. Good times.

Man, wins never come easy these days.

In other news, it appears as if the Mets have passed the “gagging bullpen” torch to the Braves for one day when they fell in Philly. Here’s to hoping that becomes permanent! Huzzah!

Pics

I love the pictures that Eric posts after the Mets win or lose. Would it be too dorky if there ever were a Star Wars image after a win though?

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
