Day baseball!

Hippo! Lunch in front of the teevee at the bar! Not a bad way to kick a Thursday into gear.

Let’s go Mets!

'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

No injury worry. This is one of the countless benefits of having two closers.

Most definitely concur.

Having two closers in our relief corps is a righteous situation, and I’m thankful that the team is in that situation.

can't get the big hit

So far, through 19 innings, the Mets can’t seem to get the big hits when they have ducks on the pond. Hope it’s not a trend for the season.

30 pitches to get out of the inning

I like that but we need to score runs too. Ollie time.

Once again, Welke is infuriating me

Arroyo gets the call when the ball is 4 inches off the outside corner. Ollie throws it right on the edge of the corner twice in a row, and a ball is called twice.

Noticably absent from that list was pitching. Give me Cole Hamels please. And no one wants Johan?? Fine by me. Some other thoughts:

  • Wanting D-Dub over Hanley is ridiculous. I’d take Hanley in a second one on one.
  • Utley to the Mets is a match made in heaven. Our biggest weakness becomes one of our biggest plusses. That’s why I made that trade happen in MLB Power Pros. I was just so sad I had to give up El Duque. ;-) (Stupid game.)

and I do appreciate Tigers greatness, but I’d rather just catch the highlights. What I love about sports is the unpredictability, and there’s nothing unpredictable about Tiger anymore. And dominance in a one-person sport is way different to me than the kind of dominance Jordan or Gretzky had.

This game has that flavor...

If I was a Reds fan, I’d be worried they can’t put away the Mets and need a run. So, as a Mets fan, that means we’re doing OK. Pressure is all on their side, they don’t want to be swept to open the season.

That being said, I wish Reyes was hitting leadoff in the 8th.

Can't blame Cordero

He saw the pitchers were getting that corner, its not like the catcher was setting up on the other side of the plate, like it was with Ollie. Cordero just knew he was going to get a pitch he shouldn’t, and he took advantage.

by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 9, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

If they were swinging at shit

that means either cordero was doing his job. or our hitting coach hasn’t been.

by Gina on Apr 9, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Cordero was efficient

He may have benefitted from the strike zone of Welke, but he got the job done efficiently. Murph struck out on a good slider, Sheff took call strike 3 (it was close) but the other pitches were strikes or close enough to swing. Only Reyes had a legit complaint as his called strike 3 was low, although it was close enough to offer at.

by zmanmetfan on Apr 9, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

In this case, Murphy was swinging I think because he saw what the ump was calling, which as wrightHOF points out, was shit.

yep

O’Day didn’t do us any favors. And leaving the bases loaded in the first came back to haunt us.

by cjmulrain on Apr 9, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a weird start

The velo’s still not there, which is concerning. This start actually reminded me of Ollie early in the spring of 2007, when he couldn’t put his fastball anywhere except the right side of the plate (inside on a lefty, away on a righty), his velo was weak, and the breaking ball was inconsistent. I think if you look at what he was doing early in the game that was working, it was really slowing himself down. One of the GKR crew pointed it out, he was really being deliberate with his mechanics, and even without the velo, he was still missing bats, and because he was taking his time he was able to throw strikes. By the third inning though, he’d sped everything up, and he wasn’t getting on top of his slider anymore and his shoulder was flying open, leading to the problems locating the fastball. I think this outing would be a great video for Warthen to sit Ollie down and make him watch, and show him what changed after the first few innings, and show him how that when he manages to control his mechanics, even if he’s not throwing 93 mph, he can be very effective. But that when he starts trying to dial it back and force the ball to the plate, that’s when the walks come, and when the walks come, thats when the big hits come.

Oddly enough, I’m not entirely discouraged by this performance. I feel like it was only a few pitches away from being a solid outing, and then Ollie just lost it, which we all know he’s prone to doing. If his fastball doesn’t start ticking up as we go through the month, however, I will be concerned.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
