Day baseball!
Hippo! Lunch in front of the teevee at the bar! Not a bad way to kick a Thursday into gear.
Let’s go Mets!
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

Castillo's actually been pretty good defensively though, so I think this is more about fatigue prevention than anything.

Cora aint so bad
I think if Luis needs a day after a night game off every once in a while Cora will fill in quite nicely…
i like that line up
cora is kind of a piece with the bat, but then pretty much so is castillo. hopefully the gods of clutchitude and grittyness will smile upon us today.
HELLO HELLO MR WILPON. WE WANT THE MANSION NOT THE CONDO.
I guess the good news about Cora
is that the third most similar batter to Mike Tyson
Are we in trouble?

Just a day off, I think
No injury worry. This is one of the countless benefits of having two closers.
by TheBigStapler on Apr 9, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Most definitely concur.
Having two closers in our relief corps is a righteous situation, and I’m thankful that the team is in that situation.

Why does he line up so far to the left or right of the plate? Shouldn't he be centered?

can't get the big hit
So far, through 19 innings, the Mets can’t seem to get the big hits when they have ducks on the pond. Hope it’s not a trend for the season.
and now Ollie
Now the worry begins. Which Ollie will show up?
Good start for Ollie
3 pitches, 3 strikes, one infield pop-up.
so far so good
5 pitches, 2 outs, this is the best the Mets could have hoped for from Ollie.
get after this guy
Lefty on lefty, challenge him Ollie!
That's what I'm talking about!
10 pitch inning, no runners, good control, 1 K. Best first inning of the year so far. Who would have expected that from Ollie?
Maybe Ollie is treating the first game
like a big game, ergo, better performance.

I just hallucinated Oliver Perez having a nice 1-2-3 inning in which he didn’t even go to 3 balls on a hitter.

That would make up for Pelf's first inning last night.

Both Arroyo and Perez are on my fantasy team
but I won’t be devastated if Arroyo gets handled today.
Arroyo
Was tough on the Mets last year, not sure why, his stuff looks very hittable, and certainly other teams have hit him hard. He has some kind of hex on the Mets lineup.
Weak bottom of the order
That was a pathetic display by the bottom of the order.
Love the free MLB preview on DirecTV
It’s the only way I’m seeing the games this week, and it’s great. Wish I could afford it but aside from the annual cost, the cost of a divorce if I would get it makes it prohibitive!
Once again, Welke is infuriating me
Arroyo gets the call when the ball is 4 inches off the outside corner. Ollie throws it right on the edge of the corner twice in a row, and a ball is called twice.
"One of the nice things about baseball is that there are no rules you can't break." - Jim Bouton
Good fastball
3-1 count, hitter looking for it, blew it right past him on the corner. Follows up with a 3-2 fastball to get him. Great sequence.
Ollie's speed
He’s been around 86-90 on the fastball, looks like he’s starting to get loose.
is it July?
This looks like the Ollie from last July. What a far cry from his last start vs. Boston at Citi.
Maybe the
Handshake Parade is a good omen.

What is he swinging at?
2 swings at pitches out of the zone high. Not like Murphy. And Reyes is MEAT! running on 1-2, they got a near pitch-out for the pitch.
What is the HP umpire looking at?
That last curve was 6 inches outside!!
That's it, I'm outta here.

My MLB.tv crapped out for a few minutes
how’d the Mets score the first run? (I saw the Church double)
those two out runs...
…really demoralize a team. Those were great runs by the Mets, they should be energized by them. All started with a walk by Wright, a seemingly harmless event.
first run
Beltran drove in Wright with a 2 out single to left, from the left-hand side of the plate.
Now give them nothing
Shut the door Ollie, no runs here.
lot of talk about a bridge
What is this, history class??
walks walks walks....
Ollie trying to make Arroyo’s at-bat useful, and who is Yanish?
Is the ump as bad as GameCast suggests?
Looks like Ollie is hitting the corners
Was just about to ask...
GameCast is showing tons of called-balls on the black.

outside pitches
Looks like the outside corner is a little extended. Plate is about 19.5 inches.
The umpire is setting up behind the catcher, inside...
and then Ollie is hitting the outside corner and getting ball calls.

Ollie seems to be struggling a bit here
Not hitting his spots, trying to guide the pitches a bit, then grooves one for a run. Beltran’s throw was terrible, but the runner likely would have scored anyway.
Color me perplexed
1st two innings masterful
then
3rd inning atrocious

NL East Players I'd like to have...
Noticably absent from that list was pitching. Give me Cole Hamels please. And no one wants Johan?? Fine by me. Some other thoughts:
- Wanting D-Dub over Hanley is ridiculous. I’d take Hanley in a second one on one.
- Utley to the Mets is a match made in heaven. Our biggest weakness becomes one of our biggest plusses. That’s why I made that trade happen in MLB Power Pros. I was just so sad I had to give up El Duque. ;-) (Stupid game.)

As Americans, we all root for the underdog
It’s in our nature. But everyonce in a while, there are people who are truly great at what they do. Whether that be a Jordan, Mark Twain, Jenny Holzer, Tiger is at that level. We’re watching greatness, a man that is by far the best at his craft, that’s why I’m interested in Tiger.

The Masters
NEVER bet against Tiger. The guy wins 25% of his tournaments.
One man show
When you watch the game Tiger plays, and see the shots he hits that no one else can, you marvel at the history you are witnessing. Jack, MJ were the same way.
true
and I do appreciate Tigers greatness, but I’d rather just catch the highlights. What I love about sports is the unpredictability, and there’s nothing unpredictable about Tiger anymore. And dominance in a one-person sport is way different to me than the kind of dominance Jordan or Gretzky had.
Anyway, sorry for the golf tangent, but it’s better than talking about Ollie…

SWAG
There goes my SWAG win for the day. Son of a …..
what? That 2-2 was a strike!
Perfect example on the umpire not calling a strike when Castro moves the glove. I think Schneider should always catch Perez.
ump judgment
It certainly was close, but Castro coming all the way across the plate to make the catch did not help. But a good ump should ignore that.
Most umps are not that good.
Castro is a better hitter, but he can’t frame pitches for shit. He reaches too much, and Ollie’s wildness exacerbates that. Or rather, Castro makes Ollie’s wildness look worse.
Perez could be a bust this year.
It’s just one game, but there’s more to it. Perez could bust this year. Hope not. I really can’t stand this chump anymore.

gameday shows he threw like
3 pitches in the actual strike zone. rest were murphy swinging at shit and the umpire calling shit.
When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."
Can't blame Cordero
He saw the pitchers were getting that corner, its not like the catcher was setting up on the other side of the plate, like it was with Ollie. Cordero just knew he was going to get a pitch he shouldn’t, and he took advantage.
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 9, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions
If they were swinging at shit
that means either cordero was doing his job. or our hitting coach hasn’t been.
Cordero was efficient
He may have benefitted from the strike zone of Welke, but he got the job done efficiently. Murph struck out on a good slider, Sheff took call strike 3 (it was close) but the other pitches were strikes or close enough to swing. Only Reyes had a legit complaint as his called strike 3 was low, although it was close enough to offer at.
Well
In this case, Murphy was swinging I think because he saw what the ump was calling, which as wrightHOF points out, was shit.

Agreed. I’ll take 2 out of 3 on the road all year long. Ollie is worrisome though.
Tomorrow's headline
Ollie’s poor outing and Time Welke’s strike zone lead to Mets demise in finale.
Seriously, I bet there were some Braves relievers wondering why they couldn’t have had Welke in the seventh the other night
by Mark Himmelstein on Apr 9, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions
Welke sucks
His strike zone is never consistent game to game.
True enough
He seemed to open with a big strike zone, tighten it up in the middle innings and then expand it again late in the game. I can’t understand why he is so far inside in his positioning though.
Masters time
Time to move on to golf. See you guys again tomorrow for Mets/Marlins.
I know it's only April
but considering all the question marks constantly surrounding Ollie and the huge leap of faith the front office took in him I don’t think it’s too early to be worried about him.
It's never too early
But knowing Ollie’s history he’ll produce some quality games. The trick will be to reduce the damage done by his “off” games.
It was a weird start
The velo’s still not there, which is concerning. This start actually reminded me of Ollie early in the spring of 2007, when he couldn’t put his fastball anywhere except the right side of the plate (inside on a lefty, away on a righty), his velo was weak, and the breaking ball was inconsistent. I think if you look at what he was doing early in the game that was working, it was really slowing himself down. One of the GKR crew pointed it out, he was really being deliberate with his mechanics, and even without the velo, he was still missing bats, and because he was taking his time he was able to throw strikes. By the third inning though, he’d sped everything up, and he wasn’t getting on top of his slider anymore and his shoulder was flying open, leading to the problems locating the fastball. I think this outing would be a great video for Warthen to sit Ollie down and make him watch, and show him what changed after the first few innings, and show him how that when he manages to control his mechanics, even if he’s not throwing 93 mph, he can be very effective. But that when he starts trying to dial it back and force the ball to the plate, that’s when the walks come, and when the walks come, thats when the big hits come.
Oddly enough, I’m not entirely discouraged by this performance. I feel like it was only a few pitches away from being a solid outing, and then Ollie just lost it, which we all know he’s prone to doing. If his fastball doesn’t start ticking up as we go through the month, however, I will be concerned.
