I can semi understand

I assume its because they think they need an extra pen arm, which I would agree with.

Who's the extra pen arm?

My understanding as well

I’m not sure if this means we’re going to have to go through the entire Figgy waivers drama again, but I see this as a short-term move to provide some bullpen relief against the Giants with Redding being called up to take the 5th starter spot on Monday.

by T Pac on May 13, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea I understand that

but Niese should stay in the rotation. If anything, release Livan or Sheffield.

He's been bad

But he did hit a game tying HR today. He also struck out looking to end the game, but still. I think he’s worth keeping around a little while longer, at least until Delgado gets back and you can start using Tatis in the outfield again.

Yup

I don’t think he’s particularly useful, he’s just more useful than anyone else you’re going to use that roster spot for right now.

umm

so does this mean Figgy is with the team forever? or does he get a spot start and then run out of town again? not sure i understand this move. my assumption would have been Redding getting the call-up.

"The definition of edge is going out there and getting a few wins, and then all of a sudden you don’t have to worry about anyone talking about edge anymore," Wright said. "That's a thing in the past. Go ask Omar about that."

by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on May 13, 2009 7:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is stupid.

One bad start, and he suddenly can’t pitch. So yeah, let’s bring up Figueroa, who’s out of options, so we can later designate him for Redding. Un-fucking-real.

Maybe

they plan on putting Delgado on the DL, playing with one less position player and one more reliever. Figgy is the long man and Redding is the starter. But yeah, I don’t like it.

"What position do you play?"
"I bat third."

by Preach19 on May 13, 2009 7:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That would be the logical move

This move has to mean Delgado is going on the DL. When is Redding scheduled to pitch again?

by metsman07 on May 14, 2009 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ugh

I keep writing out posts and realizing I’m just beating a dead horse. I’ll just sum it up and say the decisions made this off-season, even sans the Perez contract, make my head hurt.

by Gina on May 13, 2009 7:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What did everyone want here?

This team has an embarrassing lack of decent right handed relief options in the high minors — Lindstrom/Owens/Bell trades be damned!

Given the back to back extra inning games and Niese’s uneven performance, I can understand bringing up Figueroa as bullpen depth for the next four games. Things can truly get stupid when Perez comes back if the team continues to employ Livan Hernandez at the expense of another pitcher who actually deserves to be in the major leagues.

I'll tell you one thing.

Eddie Kunz>Sean Green. That is all.

There is nothing that this team does that isn't stupid

All we can do is hope the team is managed better when the next Wright/Reyes come along in 2020.

OT

James Loney just hit a ridiculous 3 run CBP homer. It was in on his hands and he was dropping his head heading to first and it ended up in the first row in right.

by Mount17 on May 13, 2009 8:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hate blame

From here on in, I don’t care about any mistakes our star players make at all (unless it’s so inordinate that it seriously begins to compromise their value, which it isn’t close to doing. I’m done with “Reyes should run harder” and “David Wright should hit nd not make errors in this or that situation”. I’m just happy I have Reyes and Wright in the knowledge that they will win many more games than they’ll lose. I’m grateful for our best players knowing that in this game our best players will fail more than they’ll succeed. When they fail, I’m just happy that they are the guys I wanted in that spot anyway. I’m just going to hope that Minaya and Jerry get replaced by people who know what they’re doing so that our team gets other guys who are half as good as these guys and gets a chance to win.

i'm okay with this move

I like Niese’s chances to help us this year, but remember he’s only 22, he’s only had a dozen starts at AAA, and, until his last start before coming up this year, he was struggling. I don’t think he was sent down because he had an underwhelming start today – instead, I think they sent him down so they could bring up Figgy to reinforce the ‘pen for a few days and then they’ll bring up Redding to take the next start in the 5th slot in the rotation. What I hope they are thinking is that Redding will be solid while Niese takes his game up another notch at AAA and is truly ready when the next flat tire hits the rotation.

by metsjetsnets on May 13, 2009 11:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Niese wasn't struggling

he should be in the rotation. That’s my problem.

It's about Redding

I’d say Niese and Redding put up fairly comparable performances in Buffalo. The difference between them is $2 million we’ve guaranteed Redding. He was going to join the team no matter what, and I don’t see going from Niese to Redding as a downgrade.

Hopefully they leave up both Figgy (long-reliever) and K-Taks (2nd lefty) and instead option down Green.

by T Pac on May 14, 2009 1:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But the thing is...

Niese>Livan, especially considering Niese’s upside. But I promise Livan will ONLY get worse over the season, while Niese will ONLY get better.

i cant say i agree with that

in potential, yes Niese is better then Livan.

But I didnt see anything out of Niese that told me a couple more minor league starts would be a bad thing.

Livan has been very solid for us this year.

Also your thinking of Niese is going to get better and Livan is going to get worse (which I agree with) would mean it would make sense to keep Livan for the rest of his slightly better then avg starts, and demote Niese for his slightly lower then avg starts, then when they switch bring him up.

by gbaked on May 14, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's also the money issue

We’re going to be paying Redding and Livan no matter what. If Niese isn’t going to be a big improvement why start his clock early?

by Gina on May 14, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i said until his last start before coming up he was struggling

how is 15 earned runs through 16 innings not struggling?

by metsjetsnets on May 14, 2009 12:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Use the reply button

His defense was struggling, not him. Niese’s tRA in Buffalo was 3.14.

Yeah, you have to read into the stats more.

He was pitching well. He was just getting bad breaks, bad defense, lots of balls that were in play fell in for hits, etc.

by squid92 on May 14, 2009 8:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bad breaks are one thing

But he was getting hammered. His command is still not where it needs to be and the Mets don’t have the luxury of having him learn in the majors. We can talk about bad luck all we want but the point is Niese isn’t ready. You can’t judge him based off one start against the Pirates, one of the worst hitting teams in the majors.

And you can judge him on one start against the Braves?

On a day when no one pitched particularly well for either team?

I don't think the fact that other people didn't pitch well really has much to do with it

it’s not like Niese and Jo-Jo were on the mount at the same time distracting each other

by JoshNY on May 14, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good points

And I’m not saying there isn’t a case for keeping him. I’m just saying there’s a case for sending him down for more seasoning – if you like a guy to be on a roll before he comes up, if you want to be relatively certain that he’s accomplished most of what there is to accomplish at AAA so that there would be no point in having him ride the Buffalo-Queens shuttle back and forth all year, then you let him go down, hone his command, win a few games, and bring him back with a little more confidence.
