Why is Manuel so inept?

Per Adam Rubin, Reyes is out again.  And so, against perhaps the best pitcher in baseball, Jerry Manuel decides "nah we don't really need good hitters."  So instead of Tatis at first, we get he of the never-started-there, Jeremy Reed.  No, no need for Daniel Murphy ANYWHERE instead of Ryan "I CAN'T HIT RIGHT NOW" Church.  I just don't get it.  I understand that you might want a lefty bat, but MURPH HAS 1B EXPERIENCE and extensive infield PT behind him.  Oh yeah, and let's reward Ramon Castro's big 9th inning hit yesterday by BENCHING HIM.  Oh, we'll surely need Santos's short swing against Tim Lincecum! I just have no idea how he can come up with these awfully horrendous lineups.  I mean, is he just picking names out of a hat, or is he horribly brain damaged?  I'm really afraid that this team needs to pull a 2008, struggle mightily so he can get canned.  At this point, I'm honestly wondering whether this team might be better off with WILLIE FREAKING RANDOLPH managing.  Why is this team, this organization SO HORRIBLY INEPT.

My rant of demands

1) Stokes will now make more appearances than Green
2) Delgado goes on DL now
3) Bring up FMart
4) Release/Trade Church
5) Repeat after me – all Mets SPs should aim to pitch at least 7 innings
6) No more set relief roles. Send RPs based on matchup not what inning
7) Putz should stuff his mouth with his cash and stop making excuses being a set-up

re: 5)

Why not have them aim to pitch at least 9 innings?

by Sokojoe on May 15, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with some of that

But some of it is way too reactionary. Nando isn’t ready. You’re not releasing Church, that’s just silly. He’s a quality defender and a streaky offensive presence, it comes down to a decent positive value player. You don’t let that walk away unless you can do significantly better, and right now, the Mets can’t.

Also, what SP doesn’t aim to pitch at least seven innings?

Releasing Church would be dumb,

I’m not opposed to dealing him, but he is going to be a FA soon, doubt we’d get a whole lot for him.

Agree with 1,2, 6

Also, if relief pitcher is having success and looking good, don’t take him out just because it’s the next inning. Use some double switches to allow your relievers to pitch 2 innings or more.

All rants are moot when the team has won 11 of 14 games.

In this case, you keep your rant in your back pocket for another day. I want to rant also but currently its TBD.

Yes

Im no apologist, by any stretch. But really, give it a rest, at least unitl a prolonged losing streak.

by TBlz on May 16, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

disagree

bad decisions don’t become good decisions just because dumb luck made them turn out well. was bunting with Church a good call because Wilson threw the ball into left field rather than getting the force out? I don’t think so.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
