Seeing Is Be-Livan: Mets 8, Giants 6

Well, that was just a great win. Consider all of the things that weren't in the Mets' favor tonight:
- Tim Lincecum was pitching for the Giants
- Livan Hernandez was pitching for the Mets
- Alex Cora was playing instead of Jose Reyes
- Omir Santos was playing instead of Ramon Castro
- Jeremy Reed was playing instead of
Carlos DelgadoFernando Tatis - Gary Sheffield was playing instead of Daniel Murphy
- Jerry Manuel was still the manager
Everything was going according to plan early on, as Hernandez was sucking, Lincecum was rocking, and the Mets were foundering, trailing 5-1 after two innings. Nothing much changed over the next three innings, but the Mets started to chip away in the sixth, scoring two runs and then another three in the seventh, knotting the game at six at that point. The outlook wasn't so good when Randy Winn tripled with one out in the eighth, but Brian Stokes stranded Winn at third, Brian Wilson coughed up two runs whilst lying in bed in the top of the ninth and Francisco Rodriguez sealed the improbable victory with a one-two-threezie in the botom of the ninth.
The Phillies won in extra innings after Brad Lidge blew a save in the ninth so the Mets remain two games up in the NL East. Johan Santana goes for the Mets tomorrow at 4pm.

holy shit
This game was supposed to be what they call in the finance world (especially these days) a “write-down”. Livan Hernandez vs. the best pitcher on the planet? Let the Giants have it.
And yet the Mets won, due to a big contribution from Mr. “has no edge” David Wright. So nice to come home from a night out to see that score, especially with Johan going tomorrow.
2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?
Johan Santana is the best pitcher on the planet, thank you.

You people should be ashamed.
I missed, like 3 innings. But I’ll take this award.
what "award"?
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Just woke up now and found out the news.
When I saw the score, I had to rub my eyes to make sure I wasn’t seeing things because they were down 5-1 in the fifth and went to bed figuring I wasn’t going to expect much in the end result. Now I’ll be very happy as I head into work in an hour. But still, goddamn those West Coast games.
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!
Holy crap!
No way did I think they were gonna pull it out after livan being terrible. Nice work, boys! Lets hope offense shows for Santana today.
holy shit
i went to sleep because it’s tim lincecum vs livan.i expected to lose but to wake up to a win is just great i love the felling

I concur with the general sentiment
I went to sleep when they were down 5-1, I was amazed when I logged onto MLB.com this morning and saw they won. Also, for all the early season prognosticating, the Mets are currently 3rd in the NL in total runs scored (way behind the Dodgers but only 4 behind the Phillies), and are 2nd in run differential, with a far better RD than the Phils. Things be looking good for the boys in blue and orange.
Just read some of the game thread and I think its hilarious how almost everyone crapped
hard on Livan Hernandez after how well he’s pitched and played for the Mets this season.
Downright Metsblog fickle!!!
this is sarcasm, right?

I agree
that it gets pretty metsbloggian in the game threads. I’m not looking for all happy thoughts and rainbows, but some perspective would be nice. Livan has done a creditable job for us, given the pitcher he is. Could we think of better guys? Sure. But Livan compared with all the other 5th pitchers in the game? Yeah, he’s done pretty well.
It’s a quirk of NY fandom to despise everything that isn’t Johanian perfection everyday and all the time, and it’s a quirk of online commenting that derision plays better than kudos. But teams are composed of their better parts and their not so great parts. The disdain and contempt just gets tiring.
Again, this is more frustration with executive decisions.
Right after sending Niese back to AAA after having a lot of bad luck but pitching well (better than Livan), Livan lets up 5 runs in his first two innings. What do you expect, honestly?
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
he hasn't even been the best 5th starter on this team
Niese is better. I bet Redding will be too.
I don't think livan has actually done well compared to other 5th starters
Or at least other 5th starters on good teams.
Brad Penny?
You mean the guy on the BoSox with a 6.87 tRA? Or some other Brad Penny? Joba isn’t exactly lighting it up either.
Livan isn’t good. #5 starters are #5s because they aren’t good. So…
p.s. Yes, I’d rather have Niese up.
Joba is doing better than Livan, though.
Brad Penny was a bad choice, though. But suffice to say, when your rotation has been a point of weakness over the season and you have a chance to improve at no cost, you NEED to do that.

David Wright
Great job. Now would be a perfect time to trade him while his value is at its highest.
Yankees fans vs. Mets fans.
I find it amusing that Yankees fans are always “proposing” ridiculously one-side trades on WFAN like, “hey let’s get Longoria and David Price from the Rays for Melky Cabrera and Phil Hughes!” whereas Mets fans on WFAN propose ridiculously one-sided trades FOR THE OTHER SIDE, “hey, that bum and showboater Reyes needs to be traded for a guy with heart! Send him to the Cubs for Ryan Theriot straight up!”

"The definition of edge is going out there and getting a few wins, and then all of a sudden you don’t have to worry about anyone talking about edge anymore," Wright said. "That's a thing in the past. Go ask Omar about that."

is that Carlin or Benegio?(sp)
or is it Mike “Now I am the Mad Dog” Francessa. All have called for trading Wright sometime this year.
That may be the most atrocious outfit I have ever seen

Case in point:
Huff for f-mart and niese??
Tacking Huff’s contract would be worth it.

Yeah I saw that
On the rare occasion I do post on mlbtraderumors, I just ignore those comments. There are a few Mets fans I can actually have reasonable discussion with, but there’s quite a bit of noise in the way there too.

actually
I’d love to get Huff if Delgado is seriously hurt. But I would trade a middling prospect or two given Huff’s age and the fact that (last year notwithstanding) he’s in his decline phase.

Right, as long as we give equal value for him
It doesn’t matter if he is in his decline phase…the Mets would get more out of him than Sheffield
I just saw the replay of Jerry getting tossed
That was an absurd strike call. The ball was practically in the dirt. Beltran thought he got called for swinging, but nope.

Eddings had the lowest strike zone I've seen in a long time.
it was consistent, thought that one to Carlos was ridiculous.
Murphy better than Sheffield? Not right now, though maybe against RH’ers. Sheff is getting on base, and while clearly in a big decline from his career numbers, the way he looks right now a 270/360/500 line doesn’t look out of the question. Maybe the league catches up to him soon, but I think that line tops anything Murphy can give. But these guys aren’t mutually exclusive, so hopefully Jerry can mix and match them properly. I won’t hold my breath.
I don't think theres an chance of a 350/500 line
He hasn’t slugged like that in years. I do think he could have a respectable on base percentage. But even with that I think if you factor in defense Murphy at worst is even with him and since the front office seems to want Murphy either in left field or first base long-term, or semi long-term at least I don’t think it’s worth it for Sheffield to get continuous playing time over him.
True
but he looks much better swinging the bat this year, than he did last year. Like I said, i don’t expect classic Sheff but his 2007 numbers would suffice. I love Murph and think he can be a part of the future, but riding Sheff while he’s hot is the proper move. That could of course end next week.
Sheff
I think he will hit but the problem is at his age, too much playing time early could cause a breakdown of his body late.
I'm not gonna complain
about Sheffield playing over Murphy. He’s no Shawn Green. It’s not like the Santos v. Castro situation. I can only stand to be pissed off about a few things at a time, especially when the Mets are rolling.
