today's lineup
is better than yesterday’s, at least.

not by much
and I wish we would put pagan in right rather than church against Unit.
by DevonEdwards on May 16, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh c'mon
First of all, I’m pretty sure Pagan has no arm. If you’re doing that, its Sheff in RF and Pagan in LF. Also, Pagan is an overrated defender and a replacement-level hitter. No thanks.
Though, in fairness, his UZR is highest in RF, which I’m very surprised to see, but its also the position he’s spent the fewest innings in, and unless I’m completely wrong about his arm, I have a feeling that’s something of a sample size fluke.

Eh
Don’t really mind Murphy sitting in this one. RF here is crazy, I don’t what Sheffield out there, and against Johnson, you’re not going to play Reed/Church and Murphy. You need to get the righty bats in. Don’t get me wrong, I love Murphy, and I get why he’s a popular player and he definitely deserves it. But he is a bit of a “tweener” right now. It was okay when you had Delgado’s bat, but if Tatis and Sheffield can get on base at a decent clip anyway, which they’ve both done, you have to try and get them in the lineup for their power potential. If Murphy can either become a slightly better outfielder or develop a bit more power, he’d become a nice everyday player. If the Mets acquired a power hitting LF, I think you actually might see Murphy start showing up a bit more at 1B and maybe even RF.

But don't you think if they actually plan on making Daniel Murphy their new 1B
which, by the way, I think is absolutely incredibly dumb, but if they plan on doing that, don’t you think he should be playing everyday? If he can’t even sniff the lineup, why not put him in AAA? Why not use him as trade bait? Just use him!
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Its incredibly poor logic
On the part of Jerry, stick with a lineup for Christ’s sake. It makes no sense to play Cora over Reyes if he is available
Well obviously that's true
And Jerry definitely seems to have a Santos like man-crush on Cora, but I have to imagine Reyes’ calf is still bothering him. Reyes’ legs may be the two most important appendages on this team save Johan Santana’s left arm, and they should be treated as such

I can agree with that
But constant lineup tinkering is not going to help with keeping the best lineup on the field.
Absolutely
But the injury bug has bitten, and aside from the actual order the players are in, I think this is the lineup you put on the field for this game. Its just that Alex Cora shouldn’t be hitting second and David Wright shouldn’t be hitting fifth.

I still disagree with Reyes sitting.
The management just need to be more clear with communicating their injuries to us. From what they’ve said, Reyes looked like he would miss one game tops. So they really just need to be upfront about what’s ACTUALLY going on injury wise.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
No they don't
Why would they do that? That hurts their bargaining position. We’re only important to the Mets FO as far as the money we’re willing to spend. But this is politics man, they don’t have to be honest with us, and I don’t expect them to.

Yeah that's definitely a concern
But I think part of that may be talk. I’m not convinced that’s set in stone right now, I think its viewed as an option contingent upon something like Fernando Martinez becoming a Major League stud or signing Matt Holiday/Jason Bay or something like that.
He could also be trade bait, but its not even Memorial Day, and the severity of the issues just aren’t that clear yet. Is Delgado going to have surgery? Is he done for the year, or might he be back after a few weeks? If Delgado is done for the year, Murphy might actually be most effectively used as trade bait, despite how much that pains me to say.
Its kind of frustrating, but I think with this particular set of problems, patience is the best approach at the moment. For the time being, I actually like the way this situation is being handled.

that is a good fucking question.
Reyes only needed “one day” and was “available” yesterday yet this is his third straight sit…WTF?
Murphy came through with 2 outs in a pinch-hit RBI situation yet he can’t get on the field…WTF?
Why in God's name would you EVER sit Jose Reyes in deference to Alex Cora? Ever? EVER?
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Haven't you heard?
Johan Santana’s pitching. The Mets must do everything they can to score as few runs as possible. In this context, why is Alex Cora not batting leadoff? That’s risky, it probably improves the Mets chances of scoring a run in the first inning.

playing with house money here
We’ve got the ace, and we’ve already at least split the series on the road (which is all I ever ask of the Mets on the road). Let’s go for the kill against the old Unit.
I was browsing McCovey Chronicles earlier, and needless to say, they’re pissed about last night. What I found amusing is that they’re ripping Aaron Rowand a new one. Yes, Rowand sucks, but remember in 2007 how the NY Posts of the world were insisting the Mets needed him? He’s hard-nosed! He’s gritty! He breaks his face crashing into walls! He’ll teach that softie Beltran how to win! Um, no.
Also, is it just me, or do the Mets have good numbers against Lincecum? I know he hasn’t been around for long, but anecdotally, it seems the Mets have hit him pretty hard.
2009 Mets: maybe its the Phillies turn to have a terrible bullpen?
Yup they have done well against Lincecum
I was at his start at Shea last year, Beltran torched him for a three run homer in the first inning and I’m pretty sure Pelfrey wound up pitching a CG. Either way, he definitely outpitched Lincecum that night, but that could have more to do with the opposing lineups than the respective pitchers.

Why is Cora Hitting 2nd...
against a guy who kills left-handed batters? I know Johnson isn’t what he used to be, but he still kills lefties and Cora hasn’t ever touched him (very small sample though). Tatis is hitting .500 against him and runs just as well.
Cora should be hitting 8th if anything. You sit Dan Murphy because he is a lefty, but it’s okay to put Cora in at the top of the lineup?
Cora is a vet who has edge
Is that too snarky for some? I mean, it’s the truth — it’s what Jerry thinks.

Agreed, this is the issue. Jerry Manuel seems borderline neurotically infatuated with borderline replacement level vets.

Good times
http://www.amazinavenue.com/2008/12/9/687582/mets-pursuing-ibanez
Of course, he’s gonna be awful for the rest of the year.
I don't think 1.5 months is enough to decide Ibanez has sudden;y become twice the player he's ever been
Of course not
But I caught hell from everyone for suggesting that maybe it wouldn’t be an awful acquisition.
It still would have been
Especially considering Dunn is hitting the crap out of the ball and wouldn’t have cost less in money/years/and picks.
my own Randy Johnson story
I made 40 bucks from Randy Johnson getting a single in the world series.
I was 11, and this was in the 2001 Yankees-D’Backs series. With the Yankees up 3-2, in the series, my dad and I went to watch Game 6 with a bunch of my dad’s friends, who were Yankee fans.
During the process of this game, I proceeded to fleece my dad’s friend Roy with some ridiculous prop bets, trivia contests, and other wagers. Now I’m 11 years old, I’m 40 dollars up, and I’m feeling like I’m on top of the world. But this was short lived.
My dad tells me that I have to give the money back. I didn’t want to, but I figured I had to listen to my dad. But I figured Roy would have more pride than to take his money back from a kid, so I decided on making the most ridiculous bet I could think of.
“40 bucks Randy Johnson gets a hit here.” Sure enough, Randy hit a little seeing eye single up the middle, and I was up 80 bucks. Kept it all, after that.

Play the inning through with the error as a groundout, and you have first and second or first and third. Both unearned.

I'm not sure because the guy went 2 bases on the single from second to home

It's not a factor
You have one game, who starts — Livan or RJ?
One reason is Randy still misses bats, and Livan needs to be lucky to get good results.
heh heh
I am too much of a lawyer to answer that question. One game Livan or RJ. Truth is I’d pray for a rainout
I am a lawyer
and I still answered it — heh. Hey, Livan gave up 5 to a super-shitty Giants lineup last night.
my point was that both of them have long seen better days
I am actually wondering why the Giants signed him. You know he isn’t a mentor type and its not like the Giants are going to contend anyway And even when he pitches well, Johnson can’t go deep in games. At least Livan can give us innings.

Didn’t think so.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
we get it
You have a hard-on for Castro. Im not saying Santos is better. Im saying maybe why he has played so much is because of defense/pitcher reasons. Im not discussing his hitting.
Not really...
Ask 80% of the people here, they all agree. If you looked at Santos’ career minor league defensive stats, you’d see he really isn’t that good defensively. And Castro, with most of the pitchers on the staff last year, produced lower averages and hit rates than Schneider.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw

"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"

exactly.
which is why the most respected catchers are usually the ones with low OBP. its more important for the calling of the game/defense than any other position.

Screw respect
by James Kannengieser on May 16, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I didnt say that.
However there are reasons the “Brad Ausmus” type catchers last in the MLB for 10+ years and it has nothing to do with their OBP
You could say that about any position
There’s a reason omar vizquel has stuck around. But that doesn’t make them any more or less respected/valuable.
Visquel was also a more than servicable hitter at times
career .273/.340/.355 hitter with a bunch of .300/.370 type seasons.

Not mutually exclusive
Santana’s missed on some pitches and been hit. Castillo’s play was awful. Cora’s should have been made. Wright’s ball was butchered (but hit hard). The Sheff play looked mostly like a 40+ year old man trying to play the outfield. He just couldn’t make that play.
Still, Santana was due for a gut-it-out start.

i'm sure this has been said
but the giants have to have the most chubby hispanic dudes in a lineup in the history of MLB.
Bochy is ridiculous
He takes this guy out AFTER he throws to Sheff?
Say this much for Sheff:
He has been taking walks. Even when he wasn’t hitting at all.
His walk sets up the obligatory Beltran steal of third on a controversial call.
"Those who fear disorder more than injustice inevitably produce more of both." -- Rev. William Coffin
As long as the controversy is that he's safe, he doesn't get hurt, and he scores
Then I’m down. I’d like him to be clearly safe so there’s no complaining from others.

Awesome Jerry quote
Okay, not really.
"I feel confident that they can. I think is more of a key for us if sheff can maintain what here’s doing for us in the four spot. That’s more of a key for us. I wouldn’t like wright and beltran to be the 4 guy. I like them 3rd and 5th.

"I got my pregnant wife (the Yankee fan) with me. Hoping my kid learns to kick her everytime the Mets score." -Schifftis-

if you do the same thing over and over, there is no deception. i think that’s the theory on things like this
if you're a lefty you can never balk @ first base
because thats just the rules. but you can balk at third base even though you can’t see the runner.
