Big Eunuch: Mets 9, Giants 6

Johan Santana was not at his best today -- nor, it should be said, was the defense -- but the Mets' offense continued to pound Giants pitching en route to a 9-6 victory and assured themselves of a series win in San Francisco with the fourth and final game tomorrow night. Santana allowed eleven hits -- some dinks, some hit hard -- but walked none and struck out seven over seven frames. His ERA ballooned to 1.36; embarrassing, I know. Despite all of the hits, Santana's swinging strike rate was 17.8% (18 of 101), which is terrific, so the six runs allowed (four earned) are an anomaly.
Gary Sheffield picked up a walk and three more hits and is now -- amazingly -- hitting .270/.410/.460, which is far better than any of us could have expected of him. He has eleven hits in his last 22 at-bats and seems to have turned his season around with more regular playing time. He's still painful to watch in the field.
While Sheffield's playing time has increased, Daniel Murphy has been relegated to part-time and pinch-hitting duties. Part of his problem may be that he has been too good at pinch-hitting, perhaps convincing Jerry Manuel that he is too valuable in that role to "waste" him as an everyday player. This logic is absurd, of course, but Manuel loves specious reasoning almost as much as he loves emo glasses.
We can rag on Manuel all we want for playing Alex Cora instead of Jose Reyes; I have no idea of Reyes's calf is really bothering him or if he continues to be benched for dramatic effect. Whatever the reason, I'll play devil's advocate for a moment here. Cora holds a substantial lead in wOBA (.395 vs .356). I don't necessarily expect that to continue, but you can make a reasonable argument that the Mets haven't been worse off -- and may in fact may have been better off -- with Cora in there instead of Reyes these past few days. If Reyes emerges from his time off with a little more grission in his step, well, all the better.
The series finale against the Giants is 8pm Sunday on ESPN.

So this is totally unrelated to the mets
But apparently the nets have been given permission to break ground for the new arena, which I had assumed was a lost cause at this point. And since there’s no nets blog, I guess 5 people isn’t enough of a fanbase to warrant having their own blog (even though the friggin d-league and bucks managed to have blogs) I figured I’d celebrate here.
so whee… we’ve moved one more step away from complete irrelevance.

I'm a Nets fan!
My first ever game was in 95 and what few fans showed up chanted “Bradley Sucks!” for most of the game. My dad, me, and 4 college-age guys were literally the only people in the section. Good times!
The 01-02 season is definitely up there among the most magical sports seasons I’ve ever followed (06 Mets, 99 Mets, 07 Giants, etc. are also up there). They’re in a rebuilding phase, but I trust the front office (certainly a lot more than I trust the Mets front office) and with Harris and Lopez, I think they can be good again real soon.
And also, I’m afraid to say it, but I’m thinking about the “L” word again. Maybe Jay-Z will get him to come to Brooklyn.

I think we have a better chance than the Knicks
just because, IMO, we’re in much better shape personnel wise. But I don’t see how we have the cap room/money unless we move Carter’s contract,, and who’s going to take that on. Plus I just really think the Cavs would have to royally mess up for Lebron not to resign with them.

I think he stays with the Cavs if they win this year
But gah, I don’t want him on the Knicks. That franchise does not deserve to have its incompetence bailed out so easily.

Why did so many of the “magical” season end in disaster? Shaq and Kobe, Clemens, Yadier Molina…FML
Well, they can’t take Tyree’s catch away from me.

And on the topic of the Mets
I can’t really fault Jerry for playing Sheffield. Play the hot hand, and that .870 OPS is fantastic (don’t know if it’s sustainable, however). What should be happening, however, is Murphy playing instead of Church.

I like keeping Church in there
for the just the defense. The Mets could use Church’s bat to come along too, of course, but Murphy on the right and Sheffield on the left doesn’t scare you a little bit?

No
Murphy’s UZR is 1.9. Church’s is -3.

that's where stats are bs
Church is far and away a better defensive player, plus he’s got that gun. To be honest, I’d put Reed in right, he’s been hitting better than Church and plays far superior defense to Murph.
by DevonEdwards on May 17, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Reed hasnt played much in the corners in his career
but he hasn’t really ever been that good there.

dude
this is a clear example of stats vs. your eyes. I’ve seen Murphy make some solid plays, but Church has been an excellent defensive right fielder, and his arm has cut off far more baserunners than Murphy’s. Look, we know stats aren’t infallible: this is one of those times. Tell me you honestly believe that Murph is a better defender than Church, tell me you want him IN RIGHT FIELD, and you’re just full of it.

then you are muy ignorante, senor.

Sure
but without Lebron, the Cavs probably don’t make the playoffs, or if they do, only as a 7 or 8 seed.

They lost to the 6 seed
the 76ers, by 1 point without LeBron, Ilgauskas, and Mo Williams playing. They wouldn’t have won 66 games, obviously. But they would have made the playoffs. In games where LeBron wasn’t at his best, Mo Williams or Ilgauskas (or even Delonte West) stepped up. The Nets have Devin Harris, who’s solid. Who else would they have (assuming they got rid of Vince Carter in order to pay LeBron) to pick up the slack?
The point I was trying to make was that putting LeBron on the Nets would not make them an NBA title contender at all. LeBron’s the best player in the world, but the Cavs’ combo of LBJ, really good role players and the best defense in the league is what’s going to win them the title.
by gogomets on May 17, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea
but the same could have been said about Jordan a decade ago too. Still, having the best player in the game is a lot better than not having him, and makes it a lot easier to fill out a roster with the right role players. Pretend, for example, that Lebron had to go to college for a season instead of straight to the NBA, and the Cavs decided to take Darko over Carmelo (or heck, even if they took Carmelo) – there’s no chance that they’d be as good as they are now. Lebron gave them instant credibility, and he makes the other players around him better.
by cjmulrain on May 17, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes, very true
but the point stands. The Nets do not become contenders by signing LeBron. They make the playoffs in the weak East, yeah.
p.s. Darko Milicic, hahaha. Being a Cavs fan, it made me very happy when the Pistons took Darko. Also, that 2003 draft class is loaded. Wow.

The Nets do not become contenders by signing LeBron.
They become contenders by signinging LeBron, the emergence of Devin Harris and Brook Lopez as some of the best in their respective positions, and drafting a good and high potential power forward or shooting guard this year.

Well, you know what I mean.
If they signed LeBron, that would give them the best player in the NBA, two players with Top-5 at their position potentials (and probably a couple of other promising and good young guys if they draft well this year and next), along with a more than respectable bench. Seriously, their bench was actually pretty good even this year, and it should only get better.

Yeah, I was just joking around a bit
Obviously LeBron would take them to another level. Add a few solid role players and they’re a top team in the East. Easier said than done, of course.

This was a dynamite game
I was there at AT&T park today, in the blaziing sun, and it was really quite awesome to see the give and take between the two teams. I’m sorry Johan got hit on so much, but it made for a really exciting game. It was nice to see Sheffield revert to being a hit machine. Hell, he’s not my go-to guy for fielding anyway. It seemed like half the stadium was filled with Mets fans. I’ve been going to games there for years, and I’ve never seen anything like it. I wanted to ask “where did all you people come from?” The cheers for the Mets were every bit as loud as the cheers for the Giants. If they clinch the sweep tomorrow, I’ll be ecstatic. Just my $.02.

I'm still annoyed about how Cora failed to get an error for that pop-up he dropped.
Hell, it was more like TWO errors because after he dropped the pop-up, he then threw an 18 hopper to the plate.

It was both of their faults.
Cora should have known not to try for that ball. Sheffield should have moved his lazy ass to catch it. Either way, it should have been caught by whoever went to catch it.

From where I sat in the stands
it looked like Cora’s ball. In fact, I turned to my friend and remarked that if Reyes had been playing, he would have have made that play. At which point, the Giants fan beside us said, “yeah, and if a mare had balls, it’s be a stallion.” But Cora made other contributions yesterday. Reyes has gotta rest some time.

Cora trying for the ball is a fault of Sheffield's
It’s the LF’s ball. Call him off or move to the spot of the popfly and Cora doesn’t worry about ranging over.
