Perfect Ending
Whatever. I turned the teevee off a few minutes ago and I'm actually laughing out loud, to no one in particular, at how horrible that throw by Reed was and at how this game could not have ended any more perfectly.
Let's just agree to pretend this whole game never happened. Except for Reed's throw, that was hilariously awesome.

Hard to believe it's a game between two first place teams.

Reed's throw sucked, but what is he even doing playing first base?

He had been good thus far at first
How could anyone know he couldn’t throw?
Where’s his rubber glove?

Right
The game isn’t on Reed, he just played his own small part in this ridiculous disaster of a game. He’s an outfielder in a high-adrenalin situation with time only to react, not think — of course he’s going to overthrow. His muscle fibers are to blame.
For some good news
Fernando Martinez with a double and a home-run.
We may need him sooner than we thought.

I've quite literally been walking around in a daze for about an hour
The only thing I can think about: This may have been the single worst executed game by a positional unit that I’ve ever seen. Up and down the line, just awfulness. Ramon Martinez, two errors. Jeremy Reed, can’t throw 50 feet. Ramon Castro, forgot the concept of “blocking the plate”. Ryan Church, misses a base. Luis Castillo, pops up a bunt with a runner on a second and no outs down a run late in the game on the road. Carlos Beltran, can’t catch a lazy flyball in a huge spot in the game. And not one of these guys did anything of significance at the plate (though Church had two hits I guess). Voltran I can forgive, because his usual awesomeness makes up for it. But the rest of them should just be embarrassed to call themselves professionals. You could have filled the lineup card completely with pitchers and David Wright and probably gotten better execution than this.

Haha true
In a way, that makes it feel worse, but really, its a positive indication for the pitching, which was quite good. It feels kind of funny saying that the way the staff looked a month ago, but that’s how quick things can change I guess.

I was thinking about what would've happened if this was at home
Everyone would have been on the field celebrating and would have to be called off. I think that’s the only thing that could have made it worse.
Sigh.
As much as I hate everything. Ever. I’m going to try to find some good in this.
Tim Redding looked pretty good after the first inning. Pagan somehow managed to….not make me angry AT THE PLATE. The bullpen looked great. I feel extremely bad for Brian Stokes. David Wright continues to be awesome.
After they took the run back, I fell to my floor and made myself into a ball. Ugh.

Yeah its true
Its not as awful as it feels, and despite the pathetic display by quite a few players, some of it was just flukey awful. Ryan Church missing a base doesn’t exactly indicate any patterns or future tendencies, nor does the fact that Jeremy Reed shouldn’t play infield, or the awful play by Beltran/Pagan. The actual indicators in this game, for the most part, were positive. Good pitching. David Wright red hot. Stokes really looks sharp. That gun was not reading very fast for anyone until he got in there throwing 97 and 98. Church seems to be staying on the ball a bit better. There were some awful PAs in there though, especially Castillo’s, he’s starting to give me flashbacks of last year.
Really, the worst actual indication in this game was abysmal infield defense, but that’s what you get for relying on Ramon Martinez fresh of a plane at SS and Jeremy Reed at 1B.

Putz.
I didn’t mention Putz.
So now I am.

Regarding Reed, I thought of a better way to put it:
If Endy Chavez was still on the team, would you play him at first base?

Just one thing to add
amid the hilarity of the Reed throw. Castro was in the wrong place AGAIN. If Reed had hit the target he wouldn’t have been able to get back and stand on the base in time, at least that’s the way it looks.
That's what I thought at first
but I went back to looked at it and it’s not true. He had his foot on the bag and took it off because of the throw.
Everyone seems to be jumping on everyone else in the postgame...
Manuel just demolished Church in the post game. Wow. In the clip I saw on SNY he was entering Larry Bowa territory. Beltran pretty much blamed things on Pagan. Church, as you might imagine, was mortified (as he should be).
I’m not sure how to feel about the little clip I heard from Manuel. I’m neither here nor there on Ryan Church, but missing a bag is about the worst thing you can do on a baseball field. Mental and physical errors in the field happen all the time. You try to limit them, but teams can go into fielding funks. Missing a bag probably happens fewer than 10 times a season on any team. It is rather unbelievable, as Manuel said.
But still, he might have also added that the team made enough mistakes to lose the game without the poor play by Church. Perhaps he did, and that was just one excerpt from that doesn’t include such a statement.
The big thing right now is keeping perspective. It’s two difficult losses, but just two losses. How does this team bounce back?

You have to be on base to miss a base.
But whomever Manuel prefers over Church, be it Reed or Pagan or Tatis or whomever, is probably going to be on base a lot less often.
Our manager is a fool.

Manuel
has demonstrated plenty of times that he doesn’t really like Church. He seems to be very bad at man-management.

strange night all around
I literally fell asleep right in the middile of the Church play at third. I fell asleep, woke up saw the final score and wondered how the hell the Mets lost that run. I thought up all kinds of wild images, secenarios etc s to what happened while waiting for the highlight to come on. I never imagined that it would be something as simple and stupid as missing third base. That is one for the ages to be sure.
Manuel’s comments after the game, while perhaps understandable, are not helpful. Church had two hits and may be breaking out of his slump but none of that matters now. He has been awful this year but I thought after the way he was treated last year, that he deserved a pass and some leeway from management and the team. it doesn’t look like he will get it.
I'm sure church
will sit for a week while pagan goes 1-for-20 as our RF

Church
Yes, Church has been bad so far this year, but he was probably our hottest hitter the first couple weeks of the season…until Manuel benched him in favor of Sheffield. Perhaps some of the blame for Church’s struggles should be placed on Jerry (add it to the list). Why Jerry would want to sit a player as streaky as Church while he is hot is atrocious management (again, add it to the list).

Why are we sitting Murph when he's not even hurt?
These random call ups are playing more than he is. This is ridiculous.

Does anyone think Beltran might be a little too quiet on fly balls in the gaps?
I only ask this because the same think happened last week (I forget against who) on a ball hit to Church and it seemed as if Church did something similar to Pagan, and moved out of the way of the ball at the very last second, because he was reacting very late to Beltran. I only ask because this has happened twice in a week now. What do you guys think?
Agreed
With his skill he has to make sure that guys back off of any ball that he can reach. He did do a great job of calling off Pagan to make the throw home in the first so I was surprised that he didn’t take charge. As if this loss wasn’t enough, now Steve Phillips has fodder for his “Beltran is not flawless, hence cannot be a leader, therefore must be traded” campaign. Sure it’s pretty bad grammatically but I like to think that poor grammar is also one of Phillips’ many flaws.
More awesomeness.
Neyer finds our collection of talent offensive. While I understand what he’s saying…you can’t blame our roster when Delgado, Reyes, Schneider AND Cora are all injured.

I don't think he's blaming the roster because they're injured
I think it’s more like how are some of these guys our best options when we suffer from injuries. I mean we have a 140, or maybe 150 I forget, dollar payroll, and that’s while criminally underpaying Reyes and Wright, we probably shouldn’t have such an insane drop off in talent when two guys get injured.
It DID happen
pretending otherwise only prevents acknowledging that there is a very funky mojo swirling above this team’s locker room.
It is a terribly responsibility-free zone. The manager may need to answer rather than go off on one of the players.
