Yikes Applesauce
Meet the Mets
Vin Scully is the best there is and he couldn't be more right. On the fly Marv Throneberry reference. Great work.
The loss was bad. Really bad. But, may I just point out that Tim Redding wasn't awful. What can you expect when you have your starting first baseman out and you're down to your third string shortstop? And when Angel Pagan doesn't move out of the way when Carlos Voltron is calling for a ball? I will encourage optimism and point you to Eric's awesome analysis of the Met offense so far this year.
But seriously, how do you miss third base? And 5 errors? Really? Really?
Carlos Delgado will undergo surgery today and is expected to miss at least two months. Could Micah Hoffpauir be his replacement? I personally would be a fan of Nick Johnson. Unfortunately, Mike Silva agrees. As long as it's not Russell Branyan. Aubrey Huff is a possibility as well.
So long Nelson Figueroa, again. We didn't even get a farewell tour.
Around the NL East
Welcome to the bigs, Ross Detwiler. The rookie went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs against the Pirates, but the Nationals still somehow lost, 12-7.
Derek Lowe finally loses, despite going 8 innings in front of the smallest crowd in Turner Field history (15,364). The Braves are somewhat closer to getting another former ace pitcher on the mound, as Tim Hudson's rehabilitation is going well.
Suspended Philly JC Romero has begun his rehab at AAA Lehigh Valley. He may be throwing eventually to newly signed catcher Paul Bako.
Around MLB
Jason Kendall has 2,000 hits? Wow. That's better news for the Brewers than this: Rickie Weeks out for the season.
Jason Isringhausen made his first Ray appearance last night. Izzy allowed one hit in one inning with a 90 mph fastball.
Brian Bruney and Chien-Ming Wang are close to returning for the Yankees. Bruney blames the umpires for his injury.
World Series games will start a half hour earlier this year.
The illusion of a curveball demonstrated. That is pretty cool.
And finally, Alfonso Soriano gets mocked at a WWE event. Classy.

That illusion page is pretty cool
Also, the Natinals have an atrocious bullpen. I mean, wow.

He just stands there like a stooge.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

I would LOVE Hoffpauir
But with the cubs injuries, and the fact that Lee and Bradley, who play the positions Hoffpauir plays, are constantly injured, why would they give him up?
I'm not a huge Hoffpauir fan
He’s a very late bloomer, and that sort of scares me. That said, rather him playing 1B than Jeremy Reed.
I kinda sorta want Nick Johnson.
Really I don't think he's really a late bloomer
I just think the cubs have never had room for him. And he was good in his early 20s he just had one awful year at 25 and then bounced back.
Oh, nit-picky
it’s “Throneberry”, not Thornberry.

I think that Brian Bruney did absolutely nothing to dispel the image of baseball players being wussies. I have to defend them all the time to guys who say that hockey players and football players are real men and that (with some exceptions) baseball players are wimps who sit out with the most trivial of injuries. I really don’t think I can defend the weak ass tool who blames waiting around for 8 1/2 minutes for the umps to make a call for his injury. C’mon Bruney toughen up you cup cake.
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
They should take five hours of defensive drills
one for each error.
And Church should sprint around the bases, touching all the bases, until Hojo gets tired of watching him.
Other good news
After reaching base three times yesterday on a homer, double, and walk, Buffalo’s playing a 12 noon game today and Fernando Martinez has taken Clay Buchholz deep. Its his sixth of the year, and his OPS is up to .870.

BTW
That was just the second homer Buchholz has given up this year in the minors.

It's been fun to follow his season so far
Struggle early, then go on a ridiculous tear, then regress a little, now looking like he’s starting to put together a bit of balance at the plate. I’d say bring him up, but I’m afraid that Jerry will end up burying him on the bench for no apparent reason.

Yup
He’s batting right now and I’m watching on gameday :). Uh-oh, in play no out, we like that.

Two homers!
He certainly enjoys Clay Buchholz’s pitching.

Oh wow
They must have changed the scoring, I read the ball hit the top of the CF wall in a chat but apparently they decided it was a homer. I saw on-field delay pop up on the Gameday and got scared, either for Fernando or Clay (I wish no ill on Red Sox prospects), but I guess they were reviewing the homer.
It must have really been a bomb too, straight away center, at least according to gameday.
So yeah, he’s now hit more homers against Buchholz than the rest of the league combined. Very, very impressive. I was trying to stay skeptical about him, even with KG rescinded his slanderous comments and there was some noise he might get called up, but it really looks like this hot streak might be a legit indication of growth. He stopped whiffing so much, he started hitting more gaps, then he started walking a bit, and now the balls are flying out of the yard the last couple games. Plus, he’s handled LHP very well, 9 for 30 with 3 2B, a homer, and 5 BBs. That’s .300 / .400 / .500 exactly in the small sample. I am starting to think bringing him up and moving Murphy to 1B might not be the worst idea. If he did come up, I’m sure Omar would command Jerry to play him at least 5 or 6 days a week.

If they brought him up
and jerked him around like one of our six non-Voltron outfielders, there might be a riot in Flushing.

I would fly to flushing just to join in
It’s like this team has no idea how to handle prospects some times. They build up crazy expectations, then they have a few bad games and suddenly their up and down and in and out of the line ups.
Actually I think the problem is
Our front office/manager seems to have no concept of sample sizes and regressions to a mean, at least when it comes to players who aren’t big names/getting hella paid. Just because a player struggles for a week or even a month doesn’t mean they should automatically be benched, because eventually their going to positively regress, but they can’t do that if you never play them.
Its both
Just look at Flores and Marte. Flores is AWOL right now, perhaps back in Spring Training, and Marte’s hovering around the mendoza line with no power or plate discipline whatsoever. These guys should be in their senior year of HS and they’re playing against guys who played in college or played professionally for at least 2 or 3 years already. And just like with Fernando, the entire minor league culture is going to come down on them, and they’re going to become these polarizing figures where no one can actually do legit analysis unless they’re there watching them game to game, because there’s just nothing to be learned from what they’re doing statistically.

I'm piling on here
but this is just about the dumbest, worst written shit I’ve ever read. What the hell is he talking about?
removing Delgado and his big-time presence from the clubhouse will free Wright and Reyes to take on a larger leadership role, reshape the character and identity of this team.
Seriously, just shut the fuck up man.

When will they learn
Wright and Reyes’s awesomeness is not an excuse for the rest of the team sucking. This is just setting yourself up to blame all the wrong people in case of a disaster, yet again.

what a moron
seriously, how did he become the most recognizable representative of Mets fans in the blogosphere?
That was going to go in tomorrow's applesauce
But, you beat me to it!
Just what this team needs! Fewer home runs and more dirty uniforms.
Include it anyway
I love how the guy “Justin M.” who wrote the e-mail inspiring the post was basically saying “Dude, what the F are you talking about?” but in a more civil fashion.

It's amazing
That we’re still on their blogroll. There’s a lot of well deserved metsblog hating on the site lately.
Haha, true
Although I doubt Matt C. reads AA. Or if he does, nothing is sinking in.
AA fav Ted Berg has been known to comment here and he’s kind of a part of Metsblog. Ted got a shout-out in a post by Joe Posnanski today.

considering they had go mets die braves on the blog roll for like years
i wouldnt sweat it.
All of the mets fans hope that we will not see the bad news mets ever again.
WTF???
-Why are all of these ass clowns bitching about the Mets needing leadership? Isn’t this team in first place (tied yes, but in first none the less)?
- Why is it when Reyes is going good, he is edgy and cocky and it is good, but when he messes up, he is cocky and stupid and it is bad?
- Why do they insist on harping on dumb ass stuff like leadership and gritty play, and ignore the fact that the Mets defense has been brutal? Or the fact that Jerry really isn’t all that better, if at all, then Willie was?
Sometime I really just hate being a Mets fan because crap like this. But I won’t quit on them because I am a fan.
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
That was the dumbest fucking thing
I have ever read about baseball.
frig, that is terrible
hes basically describing a team of milledges. in a word: woof.
