Livan a fat piece, rest of team just ugly, says neyer
robby neyer watched ALL of last nights game, then examined our poo poo line up and came to the same conclusions we all have. jerry may suck at game managing but omar sure didn't give him much of a bench to work with. anyone got any positive mets stories to post? this is getting a little redundant.

Positive?
Tim Redding was not terrible last night. I was happy to see that.
"The definition of edge is going out there and getting a few wins, and then all of a sudden you don’t have to worry about anyone talking about edge anymore," Wright said. "That's a thing in the past. Go ask Omar about that."

yep
I thought Neyer spent a little too much time talking about how Redding is the fifth starter, and therefore Livan is the fourth starter, and Livan shouldn’t be your fourth starter. I mean, “fourth” and “fifth” are just numbers telling you when they pitch. Maybe Redding will turn out OK and he’ll be the fourth starter and Livan will be the fifth starter, and it’ll still be a pretty crappy back of the rotation, but the unnecessary focus on who’s what number is.. unnecessary.

It's more damning when it comes from Neyer
He knows what he’s talking about which facilitates his forthrightness.
I’ll attempt to defend the team in this regard. There’s $51M of annual salary currently injured: Billy Wagner $10.5M, Carlos Delgado $16M, Oliver Perez $12M, Alex Cora $2M, Brian Schneider $4.9M and I’m including $5.5M for Reyes since he hasn’t played in nearly a week. That’s approximately 35% of the payroll.
Still it’s hard for the injury excuse to hold water when Perez is making twice what he’s worth, three closers combine to earn $24M, Redding is a non-tender making $2.25M guaranteed, Cora’s getting paid more than Eric Hinske and less than half of what Orlando Hudson went for. Value these dudes properly and perhaps Adam Dunn’s at 1B, Reed is in the LF and Pagan is in Buffalo as this game is being decided.

Yes you're right.
I also forgot to mention the $3M in obligations to Marlon Anderson, Duaner Sanchez and Scott Schoeneweis.

Yeah I think the issue is that we have like upwards of 50 million going towards players
that either aren’t on the team, or are barely league average/way overpaid.

Castillo, Perez, K-Rod, Schneider?
Who else would you lump in this category?

I actually wouldn't consider K-rod overpaid
he’s only actually making like 8 million this year.
I included Wagner and Delgado, the and the 3 you mentioned, Corey Sullivan, only 600,000 but still why, and cora, and livan. Even though none of the last 3 aren’t making much individually all together that’s 4 million, plus the three you mentioned that’s 7 million total, which could have gotten Randy Wolf or Abreu, or nearly Burrel. It’s like we nickle and dime ourselves to death.

I agree wholeheartedly.
They’ve left themselves with very little in-season payroll flexibility, because the Wilpons refuse to spend over the luxury tax threshold! And that really stinks, because where the Mets are right now, they’re better off acquiring a salary dump (Johnson, Kearns among others) than trading any of their top prospects — F-Mart, Niese, Havens, Holt, Marte, Mejia, Flores — for temporary upgrades. This franchise has enough young, prime year and late-prime talent to be very good for the next several years.
There’s a lot of salary off the books at the end of ‘09 and these types of overvaluations need not repeat themselves if the Mets truly want to get to that Red Sox/Rays level. I’m not so sure if I trust the ownership or the front office in that regard.

how about Alou?
Are we still paying him?

No. He's a free agent.
