Beltran Stays (New York): Steve, while I respect your work, I disagree with your statements about Carlos Beltran on Sunday Night Baseball. The guy has done nothing but produce, and name me a CF who's better in the game right now.
Steve Phillips: If the Mets don't make the playoffs, I firmly believe they need to reconfigure the core of this team. While Beltran does have talent, I just don't see him as a winning player. Even after my comments on Sunday night, Beltran let a fly ball drop in between himself and Angel Pagan in the Dodger game. I see him putting up numbers but not making plays to win games. I would take Torii Hunter, Grady Sizemore, Curtis Granderson, and Nate McLouth over Beltran, and use the financial difference to improve the team in other ways. Beltran isn't a $17 million dollar a year player. He just doesn't have the kind of impact for that kind of money.

Clearly not a “$17 million dollar a year” player. He’s worth way more than that.

So, it's Beltran or not Beltran?
Steve Phillips: They definitely have some issues. (yada yada yada) They will need Beltran, Reyes, and Wright to stay in the hunt.
Beltran is a very good person and a solid citizen, in addition to being a guy who puts up numbers. I like him, I just don’t think they can win with him.
Mets solution: get Tokuchi Toua.

Why does the fact that theres like 3-4 better/more desirable centerfielders make Beltran any less good? That’s like saying Johan Santana is good but he’s no Nolan Ryan so I wouldn’t want him on my team.

Is Beltran + Mets =/= Win. Beltran has some ineffable quality that will prevent the Mets from ever winning with him. They could get their magic number down to 1 on August 15, and they would lose every game for the rest of the season, and the Phillies would win every game, simply because Beltran is on the Mets. Its like, a Voodoo hex or something.

Where you compared viewership potential between guys like that and a bunch of legitimate sports analysts. I have no idea how to construct such an experiment, but I can’t even believe it would favor these buffoons. Are they really that entertaining? That either means I’m completely out of touch or the general population just has no sense of culture.

I’ve come to realize that the vast majority of people are really dumb and crave the lowest common denominator. It’s why reality TV thrives as good shows get canceled left and right. It’s really sad.
Well, also,
reality TV is substantially cheaper to produce.
Well, it's part of, if not the driving force behind, why
“good shows get canceled left and right” and reality shows don’t. All else being equal, the reality show will make more money — for obvious reasons.
Right
But does that make someone like Steve Phillips more entertaining to them? I mean, I don’t understand half the crap he says, does it make sense to dumb people? Even if you forget our vendetta against false baseball axioms, he talks right through the most important parts of the game without mentioning what’s going on. I can’t see how that’s acceptable broadcasting. When sports broadcasters do that, it doesn’t make me want to watch the game, it triggers my A.D.D. and makes me forget I’m even watching the game. It makes me want to sit down at my computer and rant about something unrelated to you guys, or maybe flip over to TBS and watch “The Mummy Returns” for two minutes before I get sad and decide its time to find something better to do.
I get why people like reality TV, and I get why they don’t particularly like David Cross homo-erotically spoofing Mrs. Doubtfire on a sit-com with no laugh track (how will they know what’s funny?). I even get why Steve Phillips can get away with what he does on Baseball Tonight, when there’s no game going on and he can preach to the choir of dunces. But I just don’t understand how people like him remotely encourage viewers to watch actual sporting events when they’re doing the color commentary.
