Those hideous days and nights made the franchise so lovable, so human, so flawed. Mets fans used to get it, but I am not sure they do nowadays. All that cable swag has raised expectations, gone to their heads. They think like Yankees fans, for goodness’ sakes.

That last sentence really hurts.
"The definition of edge is going out there and getting a few wins, and then all of a sudden you don’t have to worry about anyone talking about edge anymore," Wright said. "That's a thing in the past. Go ask Omar about that."

Nobody says we're like Yankee fans.

Watch your words, Vecsey. There are some lines you don’t want to cross.

I kinda agree with him.
I think we’ve had this discussion here before, but it seems that a lot of Mets fans have short memories nowadays. I sat at Shea for a lot of games in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005—the baseball was not very good, but it was still fun being a fan.
So in the larger picture, it’s great that the Mets are at least competitive these days. As a Mets fan, you have to be thankful for every good season. That’s why I wasn’t totally bummed after ‘06—it was satisfying to be part of such a great season, even though it didn’t have the greatest ending.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

+1
hell, I became a fan in the early 90’s, and loved those teams b/c I didn’t know better. ‘06 was fantastic – I think the problem is that b/c of what they’ve done the past two years, it makes the failure to win in ’06 seem that much worse.

Agreed
That’s why it’s so infuriating to watch some Mets fans get angry about any and everything, down to each and pitch thrown in the ballgame. Things are way better now than they have been for more than a few of my years as a Mets fan, and I can’t see myself getting worked up about something like Luis Castillo swinging at an 0-1 curveball.

Yup
The signal attribute of Yankee fans is their stupidity, the expectation that wins should land at their feet every day and all the time, with no real appreciation for the ups and downs of the game, the ins and outs, the vagaries of fate. The strange thing is that so many of the people losing their shit lately — Cerrone, Greg Prince — are apparently long-time fans. They would understand, you would think, as it’s what being a Mets fan teaches a person.
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville – mighty Casey has struck out.
(Don’t misunderstand me, I like having a winning team as much as anyone.)

What bothers me
is that we’ve really never had a core group anywhere near as good as Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana— even the ‘85-’89 teams didn’t have four players like that. And it just seems like we’re squandering some really great opportunities.
That said, many Mets fans are behaving like idiots. When people complain about minutiae like, “HOW COULD YOU SWING AT THAT 2-0 FASTBALL ON THE OUTSIDE CORNER WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU MORON”, it’s insane.
There’s a fine line between disappointment in how a team’s performing versus day in, day out entitlement.
