Perez pitched in two extended spring training games in Port St. Lucie earlier this month, including a five-inning outing last week that apparently was so shaky the Mets refused to release the statistics from it.

I might have to go to Buffalo to see this
Unfortunately, there is a 70% chance of rain in the Buffalo area tomorrow night so maybe I won’t make the drive.

Unbelievable.
Honestly, there’s nothing wrong with him. HE JUST SUCKS. Oh my lord, did NO ONE in the organization see it coming? Because 85% of the fans on THIS BLOG saw it coming!!! We aren’t paid to do this! As a sidenote to our already busy and hectic lives, we stopped in and saw, oh yeah, signing Oliver Perez to a $36 million contract was an AWFUL move. Really. I mean, really. Sure, I don’t think that many people thought it would be to this degree…but EVERYONE knew signing Derek Lowe at a higher price was HIGHLY preferable to signing Perez. INCLUDING OTHER GMS! Did Omar not see NO ONE ELSE WAS MAKING ANY OFFERS TO PEREZ? gah.
/end rant.

honestly? nobody saw this coming.
What happened to Ollie this spring is not just a matter of degree. I don’t think almost any of us saw this coming — I know I certainly didn’t. We didn’t support re-signing him — because we didn’t think Ollie was worth the money (and the loss of a draft pick) when there were better choices and cheaper choices out there. But we certainly didn’t anticipate that he’d implode like he has over the first month of the season. I thought he’d be serviceable, spotty, unpredictable, flaky, and basically okay but not worth the money or the years, but no way did I think he’d be out of the rotation.

Yeah
That’s right. I think we all thought he’d settle in and perform about as well as he did in ’08.
But it’s not as if this hasn’t happened before (2005-2006).

exactly
this is what I’ve been saying. 2006-2008 Oliver Perez wasn’t a terrible pitcher, he just wasn’t worth the money we gave him, which is why we all had a problem with it. 2009 Oliver Perez isn’t even worth the league minimum – I don’t think anyone anticipated that.

I thought he would be due for a dropoff
and like i said above, I didn’t anticipate THIS much of a dropoff.

Yeah I didn't expect this much of a drop off
But at the same time the guy is a head case who’s stuff has been steadily declining, this much of a drop off couldn’t have been expected but it’s not surprising that we aren’t even getting the production we thought we were overpaying for.
