Fernando Martinez gets the call
Edit: Jose Reyes and Ryan Church were put on the DL. Also, 31 year-old middle infielder Wilson Valdez was acquired from the Indians organization and added to the 25 man roster. Valdez is known more his glove (to say the least), although he posted a .382 wOBA in AAA 2 years ago.

Oh. My. God.
We shall enshrine this moment in history. Put it in a time capsule and then open it in five years to remember this moment again.

This is truly momentous
Our front office did the right thing and put two ailing players on the DL. I’m in awe.
Oh yeah and, uh, welcome to the show, Mr. The Hitting Machine.

I'm happy
but relax everyone.

I don't think anyone here expects him to excel
(or even replace Church). Consider, though, just how much effort as fans we’ve put into following this guy. It’s too late to relax!

On a sidenote
After grounding into a double play on my first ever fanpost (since deleted for major fact-checking blunder rendering it irrelevant), my first ever fanshot makes the main page.

With an edit
Suggestion – write a couple sentences in addition to the headline. This news was more than just F! getting the call-up. Congrats though.

Fair enough
Hopefully F! has a better debut

I'm pretty excited about Valdez
Seriously. Can’t hit a lick, but UZR rates him really well, albeit in limited time. +6.6 in 74 games at SS.

wasn't he an oil spill?
I hear he flashes plus grit though.
by metsjetsnets on May 26, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He is clutch :)
Really, +0.52 in 2005, +0.43 in 2007
Fangraphs
He is a Bunt-Master too = BUH% 50% in 2007
Mets solution: get Tokuchi Toua (ace starting pitcher, 1B, cleanup hitter AND manager).

Ah, so that's why Jerry picked him up.
Nothing to do with the glove. He gets to be added to Jerry’s growing bunt-ourage.

Also, Voltron out 3 days
with a bone bruise and inflamed teeeeebia. That’s how he said it, anyway.

Is Angel Pagan really starting at center
Reed is, at the very worst, Angel Pagan with a glove. Why would Manuel start the player who is Reed’s equal offensively at worst and much worse with the glove.
Our manager is stupid beyond belief.

This lineup
is gonna be wacky tonight.
by TheBigStapler on May 26, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, ridiculous lineup
3 guys who are dead weight + Tatis, Wright, Sheff, Castillo, and a 20 year old starting his first game.
by jasondg on May 26, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd rather see Reed and Murph
Than Pagan and Tatis
by EMSfan9 on May 26, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
here's the official lineup
Angel Pagan CF
Luis Castillo 2B
David Wright 3B
Gary Sheffield LF
Fernando Tatis 1B
Fernando Martinez RF
Omir Santos C
Ramon Martinez SS
Livan Hernandez RHP (3-1, 4.93)

that is a horrendous lineup
it would be better if it had Castro but Jerry is an idiot
by JoshNY on May 26, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Valdez
has a career 18.1 UZR/150, which is really good. Considering the Mets traded just cash (can’t we do that more) this is a good move, probably the best possible in the current situation.

Pagan, Ramon Martinez and Fernando Martinez all in the lineup? Ek

I don't know what to expect from F!
But heck, I can be a crazy baseball fan and hope for a redux of Ryan Braun’s 2007, right?
Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.
by Greenpoint Ian on May 26, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Eh...
Ryan Braun was 23. F! is only 20 and has played less than two months at AAA. But sure, let’s hope for the best!!!

Braun
was OPSing 1.119 in 34 AAA games before he got the call, with a 15/11 BB/K ratio.

Yeah but F! homered off Clay Buchholz
2x!
by TheBigStapler on May 26, 2009 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Clay Bucholz is honestly a legit #3 MLB pitcher right now. So that's actually pretty impressive.

I know
But that’s why I’m saying the “crazy baseball fan in me” wants to see this. You know, the same fan who thought the 2004 Mets could win the division when they got hot in late June.

What?
We just put members of our own team on the DL? And we called up a promising player with upside to replace one of them? And we made a strong, low risk high reward signing of a AAA player to replace the other?
Am I still on AA? I didn’t accidentally switch to DRaysBay or OverTheMonster, did I?

So
what are the realistic expectaions for F! Mart? How long will he stay..will he be productive?
by EMSfan9 on May 26, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well...optimistically
He stays up and hits at about Church’s level (overall, not one of his many streaks) with probably slightly more power but with probably a bigger drop off in OBP, as the one thing I really expect him to struggle with is his BB/K rate.

It's cool that Jerry's hitting him before Santos and Ramon Martinez
I expect he gets a lot of good pitches to hit.

A SLG injection
is totally what this team needs right now.
by TheBigStapler on May 26, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
We’ve got good OBP, but desperately need power.

I can only imagine the (over)reaction from the fans if he hits a HR today.
Mets solution: get Tokuchi Toua (ace starting pitcher, 1B, cleanup hitter AND manager).

I'm inclined to put the over/under at around 45 PA
I think he’ll start every day until Beltran gets back and at least get pinch hits after that until Church returns. If he’s productive, I think he’ll stay on the roster with Pagan going down. Otherwise we may not see him again until September.
