Oh! I didn't know we called Fartinez until now

Good thing i was going to skip class today anyways, must see TV!

Wow things are bad right now

Are we sure Wright isnt rehabbing and that this isn’t the New Orleans Zephyrs starting lineup?

by JDizzzy on May 26, 2009 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

No Daniel Murphy against the right-hander?

Also, anyone down there got an idea on the weather? Is this game happening?

thats what gets me

is why is Tatis (a righty) going up against a righty with Murph (who did will defensivly at 1B) sittin on the bench. Jerry loves the lefty vs. righty matchups so why Tatis?

by EMSfan9 on May 26, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Especially since both are struggling offensively.

But I think they’ll get it in, maybe a short delay or two.

Also Pagan over Reed at CF

Unless Reed is injured too

Mets solution: get Tokuchi Toua (ace starting pitcher, 1B, cleanup hitter AND manager).

by Michkin on May 26, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

That's why it's so intriguing that Reed is not starting today

BTW, is our new SS at City Field yet?

Wilson fucking Valdez

no, we don’t want to see what one of our kids could do, it’s much better to trot out a proven failure 7 days a week at short. Fuckin Omar.

by PSUdevon on May 26, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

That's unfair

Which kids? Coronado? Tejada? Havens? I submit that none of the three can hit a lick in the majors right now, and only the first two could field the position comfortably. With Tejada, there’s no reason to start the clock on a 19 year old just to serve as a stopgap. And all things considered, I’d rather use the slick-fielding 31 year old than Coronado.

For cash considerations, who cares? The guy can field. That’s all that matters for the time being.

by Michkin on May 26, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I think the general consensus is that we like the move.

He has a great glove and he’s probably an improvement over Ramon offensively as well. And all of our kids are either not ready or barely an upgrade anyway.

Yupyup.

jasondg and squid92 nailed it.

by SQUAD on May 26, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt Coronado or Malo

would be a worse hitter or significantly worse fielder than Valdez (certainly not than Martinez) and I, for one, would like to see whether they could handle it. It’s not unheard of to push kids along quickly, that’s the only way you can really see what you got.

by PSUdevon on May 26, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Malo, for what it's worth, sucks.

Valdez has a proven track record

of suckitude. Career .211 hitter. Very impressive.

by PSUdevon on May 26, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Malo's like 26

and sucks, and Coronado’s a non-prospect who was getting dominated at AAA. What’s the point?

by jasondg on May 26, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

Malo’s like a Chris Woodward redux. A guy who can play anywhere, just not particularly well. He probably doesn’t even have Woody’s bat looking at the minor league numbers.

But Stammen pitched against the Bisons twice in April this year. Fernando had no hits or walks off him, but at least he’s seem ‘em before. Plus, both of Stammen’s appearances against the Bisons were during that one rough week Fernando had.

Manny Ramirez is fourth among outfielders, with 442,763 votes in the first round of National League balloting, which was released today. He is only 34,080 votes behind third-place Carlos Beltran, who is in line for the final starting outfield spot. In fifth place is another drug cheat, Mike Cameron of Milwaukee (432,034 votes), who served a 25-game suspension at the start of last season.

Do you mean to imply that most of the Mets do not "play the game the right way"?

I will not allow the denigration of the life essence

by GenJackRipper on May 26, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

No, they try to play the right way every game and they play hard but no met fan can deny

that the team for some reason misses the easy plays and aces the hard ones. It is maddening. Maybe Fmart because he’s a rookie, plays a simple by the book game and the vets pick up his energy and relax out there.

by Major on May 26, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

If you watched any baseball team with regularity

the same things could be said. The fact that we see this team almost everyday magnifies their failures, and makes it seem as if the Mets are the only ones who make mistakes.

by James Kannengieser on May 26, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course

but the Mets have been a good defensive team which make this year’s mistakes so glaring and uncharacteristic of the team. The Mets are better than what they’ve shown so far. At least I think they are.

Agreed

that they’ve been a very good defensive team in recent years, and this season are actually among the worst. I’m not sure it has anything to do with “playing the game the right way” though.

There's a long list of players who've hit a homer or two

I’m glad he hit it, don’t get me wrong, but Santos didn’t suddenly become a good hitter. To argue otherwise is just wrong. I’d say that if he was OPSing .900, too, but he’s where, .600 or so?

comment about catchers from you when Santos get sent down. It boggles my mind when a guy that is a career minor leaguer comes up to the club and contributes and met fans rag him. makes no sense, Santos will never be here again whats the big deal?

First you say the Mets regulars don't play the game the right way

and now Santos support?!? Tsk, tsk, haha. What next, insulting Carlos Beltran for not having a winning attitude???

I think he does

I remember the day the signing was announced, for about an hour, I hated it, but realizing how little money it was, it was a no-lose move.

Omar deserves plenty of criticism, but whatever depth this team has had, its name is Gary Sheffield, and for that, Omar does deserve credit.

Exactly

And it only works that way because he’s making $11 million or so of someone else’s dime. Still, Omar wooed him, with some help from Doc, and he’s here, and there’s absolutely nothing to complain about in that.

by James Kannengieser on May 26, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I mean, in the offseason I wanted Livan as far from the roster as possible, but its hard to ever complain about a minor league signing. There’s virtually never any downside to deals like that.

by James Kannengieser on May 26, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

And the one thing he doesn't suck at

He’s managed to do. Throw lots and lots and lots of pitches. I mean, this is deeper than any other Mets SP has gone so far.

There was nothing wrong with the signing

The problem is that he made the team and has been thrust into a more prominent role due to injury/poor design

That poor injury/design as a name

And that name walked five minor leaguers in a rehab assignment today. So no disagreements with you there.

Yup

Though as a #5 starter, I don’t think carrying one or the other is a problem. The problem was that Redding got a guaranteed contract, and the cost/value for Livan on a minor league deal was much, much better. And the other problem is that you’re currently carrying both

we’ll miss him for our series because of his groin.

By the way, that just may be the best icon in the history of icons, with Gary and Doc there.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
