Nice

to see Murph back in the lineup. I am a little dumbfounded as to why hippo is hitting before F!

Better than Castro hitting 8th...

And it is good to see the Hammer back in the lineup.

by metsman07 on May 27, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

guess you could say that

I’m guessing it has something to do with the lefty-righty thing.

Creating a Martinez bloc?

I’m off to watch some AAA baseball — Rochester Red Wings v Durham Bulls, so I’ll be following on the mobile gamecast.

Let’s Go Mets! Sweeep!

This team is looking for someone to play first and Murphy could be a solid option yet he plays a game or two and then hits the bench

Why the hell does Jerry keep sitting him? I mean seriously we’re throwing Tatis in there. Murph can’t even string together 3 consecutive games.

by dulciusEXasperis on May 27, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

he played three straight at Boston

but I get you point. He needs to play every day.

by EMSfan9 on May 27, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

lol I started thinking he did have a 3 game stand but yeah he should be out there almost everyday.

Either he’s going to be a serviceable player or you send him down. It’s annoying watching them dick around with his playing time. Stay consistent with the lineup. It doesn’t help that guys play a few days and then sit.

by dulciusEXasperis on May 27, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

per Jerry:

to calm him down. He was taking a lot of extra BP and work in the cages, and this was a few days for him to clear his head.

Fartinez!

It would be nice if the Mets won tonight. Also, I’m eating pizza and drinking beer with some friends here in Baltimore. My wife is the designated driver. A sweep of the Nats would make the night perfect.

I'm still not digging Pagan as the leadoff hitter,

but he’s shown some decent plate discipline lately.

I would love to sweep while managing to throw out a lineup every game of the series that is nearly put to shame by that of a 13-32 team.

SWEEP!

I still can't get over how casually Cohen & Darling said that

Omir Santos is getting today off because he fouled a ball off his shin, but he’ll be back out there after the off day. How can the Mets honestly treat a career .650 OPSer in the minors as their starter and Ramon Castro with his slugging as the backup, unless they are doing something horribly, horribly wrong?

slot in to the lineup for next year? 2 hitter?

Beltran

(First Baseman)
(L/R Fielder)
Castillo

Martinez
Castillo
Schneider

Reyes
Murph
Wright
Beltran
Holliday
F!
Castro
Castillo
Santana

Off-topic, but did anyone see this from "Gary Carter's Ducks Blog" on Newsday?

Someone asked him about FIP/VORP, and he said:

I don’t know those stats and there are way too many stats to be concerned with to get caught up in that. The most important categories for me are batting average, home runs, RBIs and strikeout-to-walk ratio. Those are what I focus on the most.

We now go live to Eric Simon, with the AmazinAvenue minute

A question many Mets fans are asking is whether or not Gary Sheffield’s hot streak is going to continue? Well, we could ask other Mets fans, but that wouldn’t really accomplish anything, considering we are, as a fanbase, a bunch of misinformed, highly reactive and biased individuals. You know what isn’t biased or misinformed? Statistics.

Right now, Sheff’s Line Drive percentage is only 14.1. That’s surprising, because it’s the lowest mark of his career. Because that rate is so low, you’d expect some regression back towards the mean. Furthermore, his home run per fly ball rate is a remarkable 20%, which would be his highest mark since 2003. Given CitiField’s large dimensions, especially to left, one would certainly expect a precipitous drop in his home run rate. However, there’s still some hope. because his batting average on balls in play is only about .300, which is far below the league average of .330, though consistent with his past performance. Furthermore, his walk rate is up almost 19%, which would make it his highest since 1997. As we see often with players who have diminishing tools, it’s necessary to maximize your at-bats, and we’ve seen Gary Sheffield do just that, getting on base at a phenomenal rate thusfar.

The whole inning has been like that. I don’t know what the umpire smoked between innings, or what he got in his eye, but in the previous three innings those pitches were strikes.

by aparkermarshall on May 27, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

I had that hit when I was 11.

It was the 6th inning of the championship game, and batting 8th, I led off with a high pop up. So high that by the time the ball was dropped I was on second base with a gift. Down by one, our coach had the 9 hitter try and lay down a bunt, but he got hit in the face, so we had first and second and no outs. Our leadoff hitter comes up and hits a groundball down to first which is fielded, but the runner on first forgot he had to run (he was the “special kid” on our team) and so it turned into a double play. I was our last hope. The first pitch to the next hitter was over his head and to the backstop, so I came charging home to try and score. Turns out it took a crazy carom and what I thought was my coach screaming “Go, go” was actually him yelling “No, no.” As I approach the plate, the umpire has the ball waiting for me. So I decide to try and tackle him. I’m not talking lowering my shoulder, I flat out spear the kid. Sure enough, the ball comes out, and I start to celebrate that I had tied the game up. But then I got called out for not sliding and we lost the championship.

a rookie

that doesn’t run out a pop up deserves a damn good ripping. I don’t care how good he is or how tender his ego is. Milledge I didn’t mind, high fiving fans after a homer, that’s ok. Brett Myers left Wednesday’s game against the Marlins in the sixth inning with inflammation in his right hip.
Myers had allowed just two runs in five innings before imploding in the sixth. After allowing a Cody Ross homer, manager Charlie Manuel and the team’s trainer went out to check on Myers. He stayed in for a walk to John Baker before being removed. Consider his status day-to-day for now.

Just got back from Citi

And what a strange game it was. Silly F!, don’t ever do that again, but I’m content believing having 40,000 fans booing you in your second big league game is punishment enough. And for all the Jerry-bashing, one thing he does seem to do well is communicate with his players about things like this.

Also, that HR by Murph, haven’t seen the replay yet, about to go check it, but I was almost sure it was gone, and then I went to get a hot dog and heard Burkhart talking about how the fans in the porch didn’t think it hit the Subway sign, so…..how the hell did they overturn that. Also, shame on Razor Shines for sending Sheffield on that play, if it wasn’t overturned, that would have been most egregious. No outs in a tie game, I stopped watching Sheff when he touched third assuming he was going to stop.

Also, did Willingham actually knock Castro’s double back into fair territory?

Also, what a bizarre game for Johan. I’ve never seen him just lose command like that. Glad they got him the W though, if only because the team owes him some.

Check pitch f/x or Gameday on Johan.

He was certainly shaky with command, but the Sam Holbrook was awful. He was missing obvious strike calls. The walks to Zimmerman, Maxwell and Belliard should’ve all been strikeouts.

by All Shook Down on May 27, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I figured that must have been the case

I mean, I didn’t have great seats, but the only pitch Castro seemed to even move his glove on at all was ball four to Guzman, otherwise, it seemed like every pitch that was called a ball was one Castro was holding right in front of the plate, keeping his glove right where the ump could see it, and just wasn’t getting calls.

How about the Willingham play on Castro’s double though? That’s the one I was really curious about. I was sitting towards third base so I was blocked from the LF corner, and they briefly showed a replay that made it seem like Willingham overran the ball on its way to foul territory, got a glove on it, and knocked it fair. I was so surprised they even showed a replay after I saw it, usually they never show replays on plays like that where they might embarrass someone. They didn’t even replay Murphy’s homer.

by Mark Himmelstein on May 27, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He played it terribly

It appeared like he overran the ball, stumbling close to the sidewall as the ball plopped down to his right (closer to the outfield wall), just hitting the left side of the chalk.

by All Shook Down on May 27, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks

Yeah I couldn’t tell if he touched it or if he just overran it, from my vantage point I just saw him disappear into the corner, then they showed the replay but took it off right away, like the realized they made a boo-boo showing it in the first place.

Also, a word of advice for potential future Citi Patrons (I’m sure at least some of you have experienced this): Anyone sitting in the promenade in the front few rows, try and avoid aisle seats. The railing/plexiglass barrier in front of the stairways is incredibly annoying to look through. I was lucky, in that being a weeknight game, I was able to move up a row and towards the middle of the section. But when I first sat down in my ticketed seat, being in section 520, row 3, seat 2, there was a metal railing basically cutting right across my view of home plate. I would have been quite furious if there weren’t empty seats nearby.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
