Mets Priority List
Guys, I don't know what to say after this weekend. All I know is that now it seems that this team really needs to get its priorities in order. This is ridiculous that we are now putting the worst pitcher on this team in the bullpen where he can now negatively contribute in a different way: later in games. So what is our priority list? Well, no one really knows right now but this would be mine if I were Omar (and by the way, lets please quit the aggressive ideas on this site- we don't need to fire anyone):
1. Get more then 1 quality starter that won't cost you all that much- I would think of guys like Wandy Rodriguez- young and with a whole lot of upside- the problem is who can we give up? These aren't the type of guys that you can give up prospects for. What do you guys think?
2. This is up for debate- I really think we need a catcher that has the presence of Paul Lo Duca and what he did for this team in 2006. A friend recently told me we should have gotten Pudge in the offseason- I don't know why he said that because honestly Ramon Castro is the same thing. We need a younger guy that has a track record- any ideas?
To be honest with you- those are the only positions that I would be terribly worried about as a Mets fan right now. However, it seems as if the front office isn't actively pursuing anyone. Really the catcher thing doesn't have to be done right away. Getting another quality arm is a must right now, in my opinion.

priorities
1) Make Tim Teufel the 3rd base coach. His talents are wasted in A-ball.
2) Sign Bonds to wear the Mr. Met costume.
3) Frame Chase Utley for some kind of salacious crime. Preferably involving clowns, necrophilia, or the Philadelphia Zoo.
4) Try to get people not to over-react to a slow start.

Not to be a jerk.
But pretty much every team in the league is looking for a young catcher and a young pitcher with a track record.

well most rotations that are looking for that
already have at least two in place and want to get better. we only have like 1.5 (johan plus maine who’s been iffy). i think were the only team that looks at every day johan’s not pitching as an automatic uphill climb. you know what i mean? like its not killing some other teams as much as it’s killing us on a day to day basis.

I think you're overreacting a tad.
It’s still early. Maine is coming off an injury, but he’s hitting 95, so he’s probably just getting the feel of pitching back. Pelf had some issues early on, and even though he has been terrible, it’s still way too early to throw Ollie in the garbage.

i guess ur right on some points there
i just think this is the one department on our team that is keeping us from winning right now- in 3 months things may get better

Ehhh
The Mets are going to be OK at catcher this year and beyond. I don’t care what American Gangsta thinks of Ramon Castro, he has a .347 wOBA. Omir Santos, though panned by many since the pinch hitting incident, was projected this season by Marcel as a league average hitter. Pair one of those dudes with Josh Thole in 2010 and we might find ourselves with a decent catching platoon. Catching prospects like Matt Wieters and Buster Posey aren’t common.
As far as your pitching idea, Wandy Rodriguez is about the only young player the Astros have to hang their hat on. He’s not readily available. I’d be one to stand pat with Redding for now and then go sniffing around for Ben Sheets or Odalis Perez.

our perceptions at catcher
are warped, considering we’ve generally had above average to outstanding production from behind the plate for the majority of the last 24 years. Carter, Hundley, Piazza, and even LoDuca in ’06 spoiled us.

Castro + Schneider = league average last year
Given what’s available, I think we have to be happy with that.

The problem is Castro more than likely isn't going to stay healthy for more than 300 or so innings at catcher
And we’re not even sure if Jerry likes him enough for him to even get those 300 innings.

Also Marcel is the only projection system that liked Santos
Chone, Bill James, Pecota, Oliver all projected him to be well below that.

and Marcels is the worst projection system
for career minor leaguers especially

A young catcher with a track record?
Aren’t there like, three of those in all of MLB? And I don’t think McCann, Mauer, or Martin are available. Catcher isn’t the problem with the Mets anyway.

McCann and Mauer: hurt
Martin: off to a terrible start after declining last year. Catcher is just a weak position these days.
"This is the beauty of baseball. In basketball, at the end of the game, you want to put the ball in your best scorer's hands. But in baseball, it's up to a rookie like McGlinchy and a journeyman like Franco with the entire season on the line. Baseball history is dotted with names like Al Weis and Brian Doyle, men who have taken their name out of the agate type and placed it into the headlines, because it was simply their time."
