Perez To The Disabled List

Omar Minaya just made an announcement on SNY that Oliver Perez will be placed on the disabled list. An MRI revealed patella tendinitis of the right knee. On Friday, Jon Niese will be recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to make the start against the Pirates.

Ken Takahashi was scheduled to make the start on Friday, but not so much anymore.

Well OK then

this is a better idea than what we were gonna do. Go Niese!

Take your time Ollie!

We wouldn’t want you to rush back now. Maybe you can consult Brian Schneider for a rehab plan.

yup

if you don’t take real good care of it, patellar tendinitis can make your weiner fall off. It happened to a friend of mine.

So

is tonight the best night of the year for the Mets so far? Beat the Phillies despite their offense being shut down and “lose” Ollie. The season outlook just got rosier

"This is the beauty of baseball. In basketball, at the end of the game, you want to put the ball in your best scorer's hands. But in baseball, it's up to a rookie like McGlinchy and a journeyman like Franco with the entire season on the line. Baseball history is dotted with names like Al Weis and Brian Doyle, men who have taken their name out of the agate type and placed it into the headlines, because it was simply their time."

Niese, Niese, Niese!

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

by kingcritical on May 7, 2009 7:11 AM EDT up reply actions

So is Niese the new number 5?

Takahashi looked pretty good the other day. Why not give him the start?

The instrument has yet to be invented that can measure my indifference to that remark.

by zmanmetfan on May 6, 2009 11:59 PM EDT reply actions

How do you know that?

Niese wasn’t exactly tearing it up so far this year at AAA. He has 3 ML starts to his credit, although I like the kid, I just don’t see why you can’t give Takahashi a look, especially against the Pirates.

The instrument has yet to be invented that can measure my indifference to that remark.

by zmanmetfan on May 7, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Niese's underlying numbers

were pretty solid. Takahashi throws junk and supposedly could only throw as many as 65 pitches. So, I like the move. Tak can be a second lefty/long man and Ollie isn’t wasting a roster spot.

by jasondg on May 7, 2009 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Make no mistake

I like Niese, and I’m glad he’s getting another shot. I think he can do well. But if he comes in as the #5, then you are automatically expecting more from Livan, even in the short term, as a #4, and can that be expected?

The instrument has yet to be invented that can measure my indifference to that remark.

by zmanmetfan on May 7, 2009 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions

No.

But hopefully Ollie will be back soon from the minors. Because Livan and Niese>Livan and sucky Ollie. But Niese and restored Ollie> everything else.

They were going to limit Takahashi to 65 pitches

He hasn’t started a game all year, majors or minors. And Niese has been better than his minor league numbers indicate. He had a .400 or some odd BABIP despite a solid LD%/GB%/FB% and he also had a flukey low LOB%. He also had two starts where he pitched perfectly through three innings but got let down by his defense in the fourth.

As for Takahashi, he’ a deception guy, I think he’d be best served in the pen where it will take him a bit longer to get around the league and he won’t get so exposed so quick. I do like him there a lot though.

I don't know where/how you get this information

But I appreciate the updates. I too like Takahashi in long relief, I thought he looked very good the other day. I also believe the Mets pitching is beginning to come around, but I am intrigued by a post I read that suggested bringing back Rick Petersen. Wasn’t he widely criticized last year after being fired and wasn’t Warthen credited with turning the staff (except Johan) around?

by zmanmetfan on May 7, 2009 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

There’s been noise about Warthen also effecting Maine negatively. I never gave Warthen as much credit as the mainstream for Ollie, Ollie’s been through about a gazillion pitching coaches and nothing ever changes all that much with him.

And the info an Tak came from a David Lennon article I believe where he noted they were going to limit his pitches to about 65. It makes sense. He’s 40 years old, he hasn’t started a game all year, and if I’m not mistaken, he was a reliever last year in Japan.

If the Mets have any trouble with the Pirates

just tell them to throw on some Brewers jerseys. That ought to do the trick.

When Perez comes back to the big show

he better be whiter, shorter, and harboring significantly less raw talent, which of course, is the ideal recipe for grission.

How convenient.

Knee tendinitis means little more than pain in the kneecap, and isn’t a definitive type of diagnosis like, say, a fracture. Does no one else suspect this is a bogus injury designed to get Perez off the roster for a while since he’s unsuited to be a reliever (even when he’s going well)? Is the NY media reporting this without comment and with a straight face to keep Omar out of trouble with MLB?

by madisonmetsfan on May 7, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

I can't speak for the New York media

Nor would I want to but I know this is a bogus injury. When asked about which knee had been “bothering him all year” Perez had to pause and look down to see which knee was wrapped before responding “Right Knee” This injury is as bogus as Ollie’s contract. But of course I don’t care as long as he stays away from my team for the forseeable future.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
