Let's go Pelf!

Have I mentioned that I don’t particularly care for the Phillies?

Not one bit.

I don't think anyone on this site does.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

by EMSfan9 on Jun 10, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

And here is why

They are overrated. I dont care if they won the world series. They are simply an overrated team that got lucky and will never be heard from in 5 years. This “rivalry” will be long forgotten after Ryan Howard has moved on Jimmy Rollins will be OBPing, .320 if he is lucky and Chase Utley leaves for the Yankees.

by aparkermarshall on Jun 10, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

That's just it

I think they’re boring and I don’t look forward to playing them. I can’t work up a good-healthy hatred the way I have in days past for the Braves or the Cardinals. Or even the Yankees!

i agree

i don’t take the franchise seriously still. to paraphrase john lennon, “i don’t believe in Phillies.” The fact that they haven’t handled being world champs particularly class-i-ly just reinforces my feelings. that said, they’re still better than we are.

Lineup

Same as last night for the Mets while Jimmy Rollins moves to the leadoff spot for the Phils.

So then I assume

That Murph and F! will get their lefty at bats against Moyer.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

while

I like having the same lineup for the second straight game, I have to wonder about Scheider’s position on the depth chart. The guy is actually 4/12 against Hamels. Is Santos now officially starting catcher for the Mets?

by alexSVK on Jun 10, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I would have been shocked if Jerry would have givin Schnieder the start...he is a lefty ya know.

But overall I agree with you, but Jerry doesn’t look at history or stats, he goes with his gut and lefty-righty matchups. With a lefty on the mound he wants a righty in the box.

Like,

He makes me sad. Then, I feel guilty for disliking him. I mean, he didn’t do anything wrong, he’s trying his best to contribute to my favorite team. And that makes me depressed.

by TheBigStapler on Jun 10, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

You probably dislike him a little

because of all the attention from the clutch hits. Santos has gotten some big hits, but he’s just not that good and we gave up a superior player to keep him.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Jun 10, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

I think

That Jerry believes David Wright is a better, more threatening hitter, than Sheff. So by putting David behind Sheff (who has great plate discipline) it forces the pitchers to pitch to Sheff and if they walk him then Wright is there to back him up

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

huh?

was I comparing them? Also, Williams was a much better hitter, but most accounts make him out to be Manny Ramirez-esque in the field, while DiMaggio is Beltran-esque. If true, that would certainly make up a lot of ground between the two of them.

I mean, this is just inane logic

Jerry bet on Santos, and Santos failed. So you’re arguing that some hypothetical that might have happened but probably wouldn’t have would be worse than what actually did happen, which was the worst possible outcome?

No Jerry bet on 100 years of national league baseball

NL home teams have always bunted runners in late innings to eliminate the chance of a DP. No one on this blog is smarter than the managers that have used that philosophy to win games time and time again

Let's count the managerial mistakes in that half-inning:

1) Not pinch-running with Fernando Martinez.
2) Sacrifice bunting with a guy without a sac bunt since 2002.
2.5a) Not foreseeing that the Phillies would obviously IBB Church to get to Santos; or
2.5b) Thinking that he could rely on Omir Santos with the bases loaded, one out.
3) Letting Omir Santos hit.

by JohnPeterson on Jun 10, 2009 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

He had to let Omir hit

Castillo poses an interesting question

If someone has the weakest .360 OBP possible and terrible range at an important defensive position, when does that OBP become outweighed by the total lack of power and crappy defense? Fangraphs has Castillo at almost exactly replacement level now.

I will not allow the denigration of the life essence

by GenJackRipper on Jun 10, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

replacement is about right

his slow speed, no power, and awful range severely mitigate his OBP strength

he’d be a wonderful second baseman if he cost $2 million a year

Jerry Manuel...stop being....stupid...

by MetsGeek on Jun 10, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe.

in reality, not like we have better options at this moment. so it’s better than all his faults without the OBP. and 2nd basemen typically don’t have any power OR any OBP, so it’s better than nothing.

But.. but… but… its the best bullpen in the league!Yet in close games they always seem to fuck shit up. It is nice that we used Sean Green in the 7th inning, no, no, can’t go to the 8th inning man in the 7th, even though there was no 8th inning lead to hold down. We have to save Parnell so he can come in against 3 lefties and intimidate them with his .340 BA against left handed hitters. You know they will lose tomorrow, Moyer will confuse the Mets, Redding will suck cock as usual… etc. They have a perfect opportunity to negate the horrible week last week by making up 3 games in 3 days against the Phillies, are on their way, and blow a 3 run lead in the 7th inning. Awesome. I don’t even know why I bother.

Neither do I.

Castillo hit a shot in the 9th that might’ve won the game but Park made a good play between his legs. Wright hit a shot in the 10th that would’ve won the game but Werth made a great diving catch. Shit happens. Would I have preferred they scored more runs? Yep. But it ain’t like they lost 20-0 and are stranded in last place. They are three games out of first on June 10 while missing their lead-off and clean-up hitters. Long ways to go.

But you are right. The Mets played a perfect game and they should be applauded. Give me a fucking break. I get that it is a long year and all this shit, does that mean I can’t be pissed off that they literally handed the most important game of the year to our hated division rival? I also do find it meaningful that the Mets leave tons and tons of runners on base, and that our manager hasn’t the slightest clue to how to handle a bullpen or make in game substitutions. Maybe you don’t consider that meaningful, but I do. But go ahead, continue to make baseless claims about people you know nothing about. Again, you couldn’t possibly be further away from the truth by describing me the way you did.

how nobody can criticize David Wright, even when he makes an obvious horrible play, without sarcastic remarks. If Reyes made that play, we would have to watch baseball tonight, Mets postgame, every talk radio show talk about how he is immature, doesn’t care about baseball, and is overrated, yet Wright makes a critical error and nobody even seems to care. I love the guy, but why is it that he is criticism proof?

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
