Stranded Applesauce

Nice to see Mike Pelfrey get a little fire in his belly with Chase Utley. Too bad Sean Green and the defense didn't serve him better. Or the offense.

Meet the Mets

Let's try and forget that last night ever happened and get to other news. The Mets finished day 2 of the first year player draft by taking 10 pitchers, 3 catchers, 9 outfielders, and 4 infielders. Mets Geek does a great job of what might have/should have been with last year's draft.

Among the current Met prospects, Josh Thole had 3 hits in 5 plate appearances and Ike Davis hit his 5th home run of the season. Brad Holt is going to miss a start after he turned his ankle.

Hotfoot suggests getting Daniel Murphy more playing time by sending him to Triple-A where he would join new outfielder Chip Ambres.

Keith Hernandez speculates that the Met Latin players were responsible for Willie Randolph's firing.

Pickmeup hung out with some Met players in Pittsburgh and has photos to prove it.

What if the Mets ssshed the crowd in Philadelphia?

Jason at Faith and Fear in Flushing just can't hate the Phillies. He hasn't been reading Amazin' Avenue enough.

Rob Neyer talks about Livan Hernandez. He's still not that good.

Around the NL East

The Nationals have signed their first round pick... not THE one, but the other one. Washington still lost 3-2 in the 12th.

Seattle bloggers are suspicious about Raul Ibanez's season so far

Brad Lidge's knee has no structural damage so a cortizone shot it is.

Jeff Karstens pitched 4 and 2/3 innings in relief and the Pirates beat the Braves 3-2.

Chris Volstad got roughed up by the Cardinals as the Marlins lost 13-4.

Hank Aaron tells Tom Glavine to let it go.

Around MLB

Albert Pujols doesn't really have anyone else on his team.

Don't even bother calling the Blue Jays about Roy Halladay.

Magglio Ordonez is slugging .357.

Freddy Garcia is back with the White Sox. I wonder if his fastball will crack 80 mph.

Remember when Metsblog wanted Yuniesky Betancourt? Yeah, he is being benched for laziness in Seattle.

Chien-Ming Wang did not get the job done again as the Yankees have lost 7 in a row to the Red Sox.

A Brooklyn little leaguer who was shot in the head by a stray bullet during a game vows to return to the field. Good for him.

There is very little interest in the tell-all A-Rod book.

If the Mets ssshed the crowd in Philly...

Vic Torino and his Little League helmet would have nothing to do with that!

Ibanez
“There should be more credibility than some 42-year-old blogger typing in his mother’s basement.”

Seriously, I guess I know what he’s saying, but is this cliche ever going to go away? Isn’t there a better way to put it?

And doesn’t he see that by acknowledging such writers, he legitimizes them (not that they might not be legitimate, but my point is that he’s not helping his cause by trotting out the tired “mother’s basement” line).

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Im curious

How many folks on AA are 42, and are sitting in their mother’s basemant right now?

Well, shit.

I’m outnumbered here. At least I am getting a head start, honing my craft, so when I turn 40, I can move right in to mom’s and be ready to fullfill my part in keeping the internets right.

"is this cliche ever going to go away?"

Seriously. Those of us who live in our mother’s attics are getting sick of it.

Lookout Landing had a nice take on the Ibanez/blogger situation

Here:

Both parties here are right, and both parties here are wrong. JRod is right for acknowledging the possibility, and wrong for writing what he did in such a way that it could be interpreted as an accusation. Ibanez, meanwhile, is right to defend himself and go on the offensive, but wrong to target this particular article, which didn’t say anything unfair. In the end, all we’re really left with is the realization that steroid speculation is to baseball players as basement speculation is to bloggers.

A big problem the MSM has with bloggers (besides their basement residence) is that they post rumors and speculation without any evidence to back it up. So when stuff like this happens, MSM types love to pile on and let their righteous journalistic outrage be known. Meanwhile guys like Chris Mortensen and Jon Heyman report stuff all the time that turns out to be outlandish rumor/speculation.

Joe Pos also threw his two cents in on it

but for some reason his website isn’t loading on the work computer today. He also basically defends both sides, noting that the pile-on Jerod isn’t right, but Jerod should also have maybe taken note of Ibanez’s tradition of having insane hot streaks for about 50-60 games every year.

Also, Joe Pos really likes Raul Ibanez.

All of the mets fans hope that we will not see the bad news mets ever again.

Off-topic

but I just saw the Mets 2009 BB-Reference page. It’s hosted by Ted Berg, and has this awesome quote:

“The injury bug: Because the Fates are apparently huge Wily Mo Pena fans.”

Awesome

Hahaha, more reasons to love Ted Berg.

(Yes, I'm having too much fun with GraphJam)
I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
