Looking for the "Big Hit"

Man another one run loss. The Mets lost to the Phillies 5-4. Mike Pelfrey couldn't hold a three run lead. The bullpen couldn't hold a three run lead. The Mets didn't lose the game because of that. They lost the game when they couldn't get the big hit. Bases Loaded and with two outs or less the Mets couldn't get the big hit and break open the game. The Mets will not win if they cannot get the big hit.  Runners in scoring position and less than two out the Mets either strike out or pop up.  With two outs they do not get the base hit to get some runs. The Mets can not beat anybody if they can not get the big hit and score some runs. So hopefully tonight and when the Mets play the Yankees the Mets will get the big hit and win some games.

At my jazz show tonight

I’m going to see if I can get the drummer to play some bongos, the sax player to play something smooth and maybe I can do my rendition of the “Big Hit”

It reminds me of “So I Married an axe murdered” with Mike Meyers

You can't count on the big hit every time you're in the late innings

But you have greater chances when you have legitimate RBI threats throughout the batting order. Small ball is great fun but you can’t count on 3 hits in a row. Rather, you need to be able to set the table and wipe it clean with the next batter.

Without Reyes, our lineup is shallower. Without Delgado, our lineup is even shallower and we’re without our natural slugger.

We’re going to see a few more of these small ball tough losses before we get some people back.

Not enough white space at the bottom

I don’t know what to do . . .

He might've left some

but did you differntiate what was actually a sentence?

Thats 5 “big hits” in only 11 sentence appearances. Perhaps Centerpede should be batting cleanup for the Mets

1o1 is attracted to bad losses like catnip

So, there is a bright side to games like last night’s. Bad news: ugly loss and we’re pissed because we shat another one away. Good news: 1o1 will brighten all our days with some analysis and profound insight.
Are the Mets playing the Yanks tonight, btw?

by TBlz on Jun 11, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

no

which is part of what’s so beautiful about this post

"Big Hit" Count

6. Total number of sentences: 12. “Big Hit” to Sentence count: 1/2. Centerpede is batting .500 with this one. Also, I’m not counting “do not get the base hit to score some runs” – even though it’s similar to “big hit.”

by cjmulrain on Jun 11, 2009 2:16 PM EDT reply actions

And let's not forget that if it wasn't for an amazing catch by Werth

we would have won this game. Entonces, necesitamos relajarnos.

or the call at first

where the replay showed Beltran was safe and the Mets should have legitimately won 5-4 in 9

by JDizzzy on Jun 11, 2009 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

it's so asinine

that they don’t have instant replay for plays like that.

by cjmulrain on Jun 11, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Do the umps view the replays of all their mistakes

After a game and say, man did I shit the bed there?
Or, do they remain indignant about their calls, because, well, sure, they’re big league umpires?

by TBlz on Jun 11, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably remain indignant

It was a makeup call for calling Castillo safe earlier in the game

by metsman07 on Jun 11, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair

the same ump called Luis Castillo safe when he was clearly out earlier in the game. Two wrongs != one right, but it’s not as if he was only hosing the Mets.

by Eric Simon on Jun 11, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

And I'm sure the umps

feel worse about the bad calls than we do, at least from everything I’ve heard. We can talk about big hits but I think we’ve had our share this year (that catcher whose name I won’t mention’s home run off Papelbon comes to mind) In reality, Beltran catches that fly ball 98/100 times, and Wright makes that play 9/10 times. If either of those things happen, the Mets get the win

by njmetfan12 on Jun 11, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly why last night hurts more...

Because they could have shut the door on their own…it wasn’t the umps.

It happens…tonight is a new night…go get ’em

Rec'd

Hey Eric Simon, when are the people at Sports Blogs gonna give Centerpede101 his/her/it’s own blog?

Grission and Husart - that is either the non-union Mexican equivelant of "Starsky and Hutch" or the key to winning the World Series.

by IanB in MD on Jun 11, 2009 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Mark Wahlberg + Lou Diamond Phillips = Wins

Don’t worry I just placed a gift order from Amazon and the team should be getting ‘The Big Hit’ on blueray in 1-2 business days.
Also, I realize that c101 posts are well known for stating the obvious but I had to stand up and applaud for this:
“Bases Loaded and with two outs or less . . .”
Of course every at-bat in baseball occurs with two outs or less but damn do I like his/her style.

by Shea Bone on Jun 11, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

The Mets are terrible

with the bases loaded and three or more outs. Last in the league, I’d bet.

by Eric Simon on Jun 11, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think they've scored even once in that situation.

Then again, our pitching is best in the league at preventing runs scored in that situation as well. Interesting, I know.

I think

It’s time for Eric to step down and the age of centerpede 101 to begin. He’s now produced eight of these, each the very model of concision. Enough of this thinking shit; I want more centerpede. Just imagine what AA would look like with centerpede in charge. Brings tears to my eyes.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
