Darn

wanted to see MURPH in the lineup. Ah well. At least F! gets in the batting order vs. the lefty. Want him a bit higher in the order though.

Fucking Jerry said he'd give F! and Murph 1 game out of the 3.....WTF man lol.

Can we just kill this bastard seriously he’s so far past incompetent. I don’t understand Jerry’s logic to giving Tatis more time at first than Murph. Not like he’s been solid at the plate this series.

by dulciusEXasperis on Jun 11, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I think..

Jerry is obsessed with this power thing now, and believes Tatis has more than Murph.

So Tatis can hit a grand slam every 20 years good for him lol. Murph has more HR's and RBI's thus far and has solid potential. He just needs the consistancy of playing games

So Tatis can hit a grand slam every 20 years good for him lol. Murph has more HR’s and RBI’s thus far. He just needs the consistency of playing games. Either give the guy a shot or send him back down so he can see a bats and get experience every game. Jerry is rotting his potential and confidence away by implementing this ludicrous method of playing time.

by dulciusEXasperis on Jun 11, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you actually think Murphy's a better matchup against Moyer than Tatis?

I would be upset about this if it were F! sitting and Murphy was in, but this is the one that I can deal with. The kid is 20 years old and probably isn’t that far behind Murphy in terms of ability. He’s getting better, and could be special. Murphy had perceived grit and a “blue collar style” and a great 150 big league PAs. This after a minor league season that was something between very good and tweeneresque (for a corner guy). I don’t think Murphy’s as bad as he’s been this year, but I also don’t think he’s THAT far from his ceiling still. Extra minor league seasoning isn’t going to be as important for him if he’s not getting starts. He’s also not a particularly great option for first base on a contending team, but he’s better than anyone else aside from Tatis, who is probably about equal.

Murphy as a super bench player with a .750-.800 OPS

Would be awfully valuable to this franchise going forward.

by All Shook Down on Jun 11, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

This I agree with

And while that might not mean he should be in the minors to get PAs, it might mean that he should be there to learn a few more positions. Trying him at 2B at the big league level is a difficult gamble to make, but if he can do it in the minors for a little while, also get in the batters box everyday, that might be wise. Plus, Buffalo’s so crappy, Murphy could probably be an upgrade for them at every position, so there’s no worry about blocking someone else positionally.

If Tatis ever connects on one of those fastballs down the middle

that he frequently gets, maybe he could show off some of that power

by Mount17 on Jun 11, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I also think

If the Mets had won last night, Jerry would have felt more comfortable giving Murph a shot. Especially if Murphy didn’t have that big strikeout. Given the situation, he felt he had the choice between starting F! or Murph, and if that’s the decision you give yourself, its not a hard one to make. I don’t entirely agree, but I can stomach it.

Because he is terrible behind the plate.

by metsman07 on Jun 11, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

He's been pretty lousy at catching too

Or so it seems. There’s very little to go on besides observation.

Also, I want to gag when the announcers say that the pitching staff “loves how he receives the ball”. That’s the catching equivalent of “she’s very good at walking” and “you are very human”.

by All Shook Down on Jun 11, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

By the way

I would love to see Murphy at 2B this season. Can he possibly be worse than the f’n black hole that’s stationed there currently?

Hey now

Castillo has been solid defensively and his bat has been better than expected.

by EMSfan9 on Jun 11, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I know that.

They are going to have to make a decision sooner rather than later.

Moyer could have a terrible outing tonight as well.

I hope Redding pitches as well as he did last week. He definitely earned himself a spot for now. I don’t totally dislike him per se, but if they have better options, use them.

by metsman07 on Jun 11, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Problem is

What are your better options? The answer is probably Jon Niese. But his results have been pretty poor and the organization isn’t going to go for it unless he strings a couple of “good starts” together. Still, a .385 BABIP in 206 BF is pretty absurd, and indicates just how little support Buffalo has given him. He’s doing everything you want him to do though.

But that’s about it in terms of other options. What’s the latest on Ollie? I feel like news on him has been quiet.

Never going to happen

They were monitoring Holt’s innings very closely to begin with. The only way he sees big league time at all this year is in the pen. Then again, I said no way Mejia belongs in Double-A.

I meant it jokingly.

But Holt could be here next year he continues to play this well and continues to develop his secondary pitches. Mejia is at least two years away, unless he just dominates this year and early next.

by Evan_S on Jun 11, 2009 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Lol fair enough

The promotion definitely makes their arrivals feel sooner. They’ll both probably be in big league camp next year, so we have that to look forward to.

by Mark Himmelstein on Jun 11, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

But would using Niese on the big club for an extended period of time

Be a problem? He has proven somewhat that he can be a cost effective option in the majors for a bit. Who knows, maybe he strings good starts together and gets some better D behind him…

Like I said, I’m not totally opposed to Redding…but the Mets are in a pretty interesting situation when Ollie comes back.

by metsman07 on Jun 11, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

how long do we expect Hernandez to pitch well? How many good games can Redding pitch?
If Ollie can “control” his stuff, he’s better than both.

But I have a feeling the organization does. I was hoping Niese was coming back up after the west coast road trip.

Niese

At this point, I don’t think it hurts to let him pitch. Obviously the organization doesn’t see it that way…like you said.

He could be very valuable late in the summer though.

by metsman07 on Jun 11, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

It hurts them

In that it means admitting they made a poor $2.5 million investment in Redding. The worst part of all this is, if the Mets do callup Niese, I could completely see a scenario where the result was Stokes getting DFA’d. Redding to pen and some peculiar need to keep the second lefty who’s been ineffective against lefties.

That has spanned years and years.

Then go look at how he has done for the Mets this season and for how long he has played this season compared to his entire career in the minors.

Then come back.

by MetsGeek on Jun 11, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

you're missing the point, though

we’re not really criticizing Santos for making outs, we’re criticizing A) the Mets’ front office for making the bad decision to keep him based on a small sample size during a hot streak rather than the much larger sample size that suggested a regression to a lower level, and B) broadcasters who bought into the hype.

as has been said multiple times, we hope Santos is the very best he can be for the Mets, but because we know that’s unlikely to be very good, we think the front office should be mocked.

by JoshNY on Jun 11, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It's an empty .270

His OBP is sub-.300 making him a pretty easy out.

by All Shook Down on Jun 11, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

We have different ideas of "contributing" I guess

He’s basically a RH version of Brian Schneider. 270 singles hitter w/o much power or walks. And Schneider walks a bit more often. He’s barely above replacement so I can’t see how he can be called a contributor. Although I understand your point that this board is particularly hard on him.

by Zwill on Jun 11, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

its just silly

he’s playing pretty well for who he is. plus it is hard to ignore the FACT that Castro never makes it through more than July. Never (except 2005).

Santos is not a good baseball player.

It doesn’t mean we hate him, we hate the fact that he’s playing so much when there was a superior option. Also it quicker to “Santos sucks” than “Omar should have kept Castro instead and Manuel shouldn’t have been giving so much time to Santos.”

Even so, why wouldn’t it make sense to keep Hippo unless and until he gets injured, and then use Santos, who is not as good at baseball?

Besides, we can WAIT for Castro to get an injury if you assume he will.

But Santos has already shown signs of regression.

then you’d have exactly the situation you have now!!
thus you’re criticizing the mets for deciding that 2 months more of Blastro wasn’t worth riding a younger, cheaper, most-likely-to-be-healthy, similar BACKUP catcher while he was hot. That doesn’t sound like such a crazy decision anymore.
I get that management isn’t popular, but tortured logic.

No your statement is illogical.

I’m saying keep Castro, a better player, and Santos and Schnieder. IF Castro gets injured then play Santos (who isn’t the worst third option ever), and if Castro is healthy you have him all year.

Castro is better, plain and simple, and to trade him for nothing is absolutely ridiculous.

That's kind of the point though

We’ve seen his best. It’s not going to get better, it’s going to get worse as he regresses to what he really is. Maybe we shouldn’t kill him for being who he is but he doesn’t really belong on this team, not over Castro or Valentin for sure. And it’s aggravated by the fact that mgmt seems to love him and has given him ~60% of the starts since his callup.

Its gotta be a combination of Feliciano, Stokes, Parnell, and maybe Tak. Green’s marks already hit this inning (Feliz, Werth). But lo and behold, who is warming? Green.

You kind of have to. I agree, Green could have gotten the last inning and Parnell could have come in now, especially with K-Rod available for one inning max most likely

I actually think we’ve got a good group of hip-hop fans here if we ever got sick of the mets.

Where is the outrage?

There was a mob calling for Willie’s head two years ago. We have improved zero, and no noise. Manuel sucks. We need a real manager.

Outrage against the manager?

Plenty of it here. Unless maybe you were referring to the mainstream sports media?

The outrage

The previous 1000 comments didn’t do it for you?

by Zwill on Jun 11, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure there is outrage here.

But you never hear anyone in the booth questioning him. Or anywhere else for that matter. When it was Willie, there was a Willie watcher every game.

It's just the news cycle

Willie wore out his welcome over time. Jerry will do the same. Let’s not pretend it’s about merit in this organization.

by Zwill on Jun 11, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Wille was run out of town

because he pissed of the writers. The writers love Jerry. It happened to Bobby V too. He was smarter thna them and liked to remind them of it and they didn’t like that.

It was happening to Coughlin too but he won the SB so he is safe for now.

I love how manuel just used the "we don't have enough" line.

Just accounced on SNY

Omar coming up to talk about it.

If half the minor league sysytem wasn’t also hurt they could bring up Holt.

Unless Delgado and Reyes are coming back SOON ...

Omar must make a move or two. We cannot compete without our “spark plug” and our “thumper.”

We have been competing just fine.

We just need a manager that knows how to use his damn bullpen.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
